TERM 4  - WEEK 7 - 2018

From the Principal's Desk

Next week is a very important week for our students. It is a week of taking full responsibility for their actions. This means that they will be required to apply themselves fully to their employer next week. The challenge presented is that students may not see the full benefit to themselves, for that hard work during this week. Certainly, some students may be fortunate and be offered full or part time work as a result of their effort, however for most students, it will be another week building their experiences. What is most important is that students realise how responsible they are, through their actions, for the opportunities that are presented to them.

This is a lesson that some people never learn and one that we should all be very keen for students to understand. It is this lesson which will set them up to take advantage of all of the potential opportunities that are available for them. So, make sure that you support them by reminding them every task, at any job, is important. That each task is just another potential step towards the next opportunity. Remind them that the best work ethic and attitude is the key for success and the very thing that an employer is looking for in a potential employee. In addition, most importantly, do not let them avoid their responsibility towards themselves because this is a corrosive mindset, which will only limit them into the future.

Community Service - Recap of the Year
Over this past year, I have had the pleasure of accompanying our Newman students participating in community service. It was a wonderful opportunity for them to get involved within the community. Throughout the year, we have had 44 of our Year 11 students volunteering for a variety of events and Newman has given over 75 hours of service to the Port Macquarie community.

On the first Tuesday of each month, we would visit the Emmaus Care Facility, where we would spend time with the patrons at the cafe, provided music and aid in the facilitation of Mass. It was lovely to see how the presence and company of our students brought a light to the patrons' eyes.

Each Tuesday and Wednesday, a few students would join me in serving food at St Agnes' Soup Kitchen and  St Thomas' Soup Kitchen. The students were wonderful all year in their hospitality, engagement in conversations, and service. Newman became a very well-known presence at both of these places and were always welcomed and thanked after each lunch.

Sailability is an event that our students were able to volunteer for this past term, which took place every Wednesday morning. We were able to aid those who are not able to sail, a chance to be on the water. It was an incredible sight to see the joy on the patrons faces, and to know that Newman helped to make it possible. Some of our students were even offered a cheeky sail themselves!

It has been a pleasure and an honour to journey with our Newman students in community service. I would like to thank each and every student that donated their time, energy, and efforts to volunteering this past year - the community is richer for it!
