In a year full of bold climate action and policy advancements on the state and local levels, our cleantech community continues to prove that it is up to the challenge of shaping and supporting San Diego’s clean energy future. As you’ll read in our 2018 Annual Report, the San Diego region made meaningful progress on several groundbreaking clean energy and climate action issues this year, a number of which are creating big shifts in the way we will use and procure energy for decades to come. San Diego’s cleantech leadership continues to be a model across the state and the nation thanks to our dedicated members in the public, private, and academic sectors and their unmatched spirit of collaboration. Paths to Funding: Attracting Capital for Cleantech Companies

On November 7, Cleantech San Diego hosted an Education Series event in partnership with the San Diego Venture Group and the San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network on the topic of Paths to Funding: Attracting Capital for Cleantech Companies. The event featured a conversation with regional startup founders and investors who discussed a number of effective paths to funding and provided examples of how cleantech companies can position themselves to attract capital. Speakers included representatives from Toronto Stock Exchange, ENGIE Services, California Energy CommissionOberon Fuels, Measurabl, and Nuvve.
 

Cleantech San Diego Updated on Key Findings of Two Global Energy Reports

On November 29, Cleantech San Diego members heard from Douglas Kot and Christian Lindeen of DNV GL about the key findings of two recently released energy industry reports. The Energy Transition Outlook is a global and regional forecast of the changes in our energy needs as we approach the year 2050. The Global Opportunity Report presents a guide to opportunities for building a safe and sustainable future. View Presentation
 

SDREIN Wins $750,000 i6 Grant to Expand Energy Startup Support in the Inland Empire


The U.S. Economic Development Administration announced this week that Cleantech San Diego's San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network (SDREIN) has won nearly $750,000 in i6 grant funding. The grant, led by SDREIN partners at the University of San Diego, will scale up the capacity of the SDREIN accelerator program to support the creation and commercialization of clean energy startups in the Inland Empire, namely Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Read More
 

San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network Update


San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network (SDREIN) companies continue to reach significant milestones and receive industry recognition. KIGT has recently completed the final surge test en route to receiving UL certification for their MINI eCharger, the first and smallest home electric vehicle charging system with an interactive touch screen. 

As Nuvve continues to secure new contracts around the world for deployment of their grid-integrated vehicle software platform that maximizes electric vehicle charging revenue streams and customer value, it is being recognized as the global leader in vehicle-to-grid technology. Nuvve won the Energy Storage North America Outstanding Mobility Award for their grant-funded INVENT project, which is operational as part of UC San Diego’s Triton Riders service. Nuvve is currently pursuing a Series B investment round.

Smart Cities San Diego Took Global Stage at Smart City Expo in Barcelona

From November 13-15, Cleantech San Diego and Smart Cities San Diego, along with the City of San DiegoPort of San DiegoCurrent, powered by GEAT&TItronIKE Smart City, Black & Veatch, Atonix DigitalQualcomm, and World Trade Center San Diego, showcased San Diego's regional smart cities efforts on a global stage at the Smart City Expo World Congress in Barcelona. The delegation hosted a Smart Cities San Diego booth at the expo and participated in a number of panel discussions and workshops as part of the international conference, which brought together 21,000 smart city professionals from 700 cities.
 

City of San Diego Further Boosts Digital Infrastructure with Current, powered by GE

Last month, the City of San Diego debuted a suite of new smart city apps and intelligent lighting controls from Current, powered by GE. The city has also committed to adding another 1,000 CityIQ sensor nodes plus a first-of-its-kind lighting controls utility interface that will boost LED streetlight efficiency by an additional 20 percent. In total, the city’s digital infrastructure will include 4,200 CityIQ nodes installed across 14,000 LED fixtures. The initiative is expected to save the city an estimated $3.6 million annually in energy and maintenance costs. Read More
 

Primo Wind Wins CONNECT Most Innovative New Product Award

Last week, Cleantech San Diego member and San Diego Regional Energy Innovation Network company Primo Wind received a CONNECT Most Innovative New Product Award in the cleantech, sustainability, and energy category. Primo Wind’s patented microwind and solar PV self-powered EnergiPlant is designed for simple, off-grid installment at public and commercial campuses and parks and provides data collection and security using an LTE or 4G camera. The integrated battery storage system and six USB ports also offers access to phone and laptop charging. Read More
 

Call for Applications from IoT Developers: Itron Smart City Challenge

The Itron Smart City Challenge is bringing together leading IoT developers from across the world to tackle a set of key business and societal challenges designed by city leaders with the goal of identifying breakthrough solutions that enhance citizen wellbeing, improve operational efficiency, and build more resourceful communities. Technology providers will leverage Itron’s open IoT platform and developer tools to prototype new smart city solutions. Winning companies will receive product engineering assistance, marketing, and promotional support, and an opportunity to pitch their solution to leading European cities. Learn More
 

Call for Applications: Scripps MAS Climate Science and Policy Program

Scripps Institution of Oceanography at UC San Diego is looking for ambitious professionals to guide and spearhead climate change solutions. Scripps's competitive 12-month master's program combines scientific knowledge of climate principles with policy and communication training so graduates can apply climate solutions in a wide variety of industries and fields. The application period closes on January 8, 2019 and the program's 2019-2020 academic year begins in July 2019. Learn More
