Energy and Carbon Insights - Building your own solar farm

View this email in your browser
Hi <<First Name>>,

In our previous newsletter, we looked at eight ways to reach 100% renewable energy, which included options to build or buy renewables. In this newsletter, we are diving deeper into building your own solar farm. When we say 'build your own solar farm' we are not talking about putting solar PV on your roofs - we mean a grid-connected solar farm which would be able to serve all your electricity needs. To see whether this is a viable option for you, read on.

Talking about serving all your electricity needs from renewables, we have also updated our ambitious commitment graphics for all levels of government. In particular, there has been a significant increase in ambitious renewable energy and carbon commitments by local governments.

In carbon accounting news, we published an article that clarifies how you can account for federal and state-based certificate schemes, like STCs, LGCs and ESCs. It's not always straightforward and we are aiming to produce more content around carbon accounting and management going forward.

And finally, we would like to thank the Inner West Council for inviting Barbara, our Co-CEO to be a judge of the Sustainability Leadership Award for local businesses, which went ahead last night, despite the inclement weather.

Ambitious carbon and renewable energy commitments by local governments

Our updated review of carbon and renewable energy commitments, immediately following the Cities Power Partnership summit in Kiama, reveals that local governments are accelerating their commitments and implementation of actions to drive sustainability outcomes. With more and more local governments committing to ambitious goals, we developed state-by-state graphics that show these commitments...

We showcase three tables with commitments of states and territories, followed by capital cities, councils, and their communities...

What you need to know about accounting for LGCs, STCs, ESCs, VEECs, ACCUs

For many sustainability managers, navigating the many acronyms that exist for renewable energy certificates like LGCs and state-based certificate schemes like ESCs for carbon reduction activities can be confusing. Some schemes are federal; others are state-based. Some relate to energy, others to carbon. Some can be used for carbon reduction; others can’t. To make sense of these three and four-letter acronyms, we thought it was time to publish a blog post on this topic...

Building your own grid-connected solar farm under an EPC contract

The volatility of wholesale electricity prices in recent years had many organisations consider building their own mid-scale solar farm to mitigate this risk. Installing solar PV on facilities can have an upper limit due to available roof size, so some organisations are considering building one big solar farm instead that can supply them with renewable electricity. This article analyses whether you should build your own solar farm...
