Greetings, Friends of West Seattle Cellars,

Thanksgiving has come and gone and December is nearly here—always the busiest month of the year, with its endless array of activities and events. Be sure to check out our calendar below for details on our upcoming holiday tastings: Ports, next Thursday, and Grower Champagne on Saturday, December 15. Plus a tasting of wines from highly-acclaimed Long Shadows Vintners on Saturday, December 8. These are some of our most popular tastings of the year, and they’re also great opportunities to find the perfect wines for holiday entertaining and gift-giving!

This Week’s Tasting:

Thursday, November 29, 5:30 to 8:00 pm — December Collector’s Club Wines
Hard to believe, but it’s time to present our last Collector’s Club of 2018. This month’s club features wines from France, Italy, Portugal, and California. And with our bonus wines (indicated by an * below), we add Spain and Washington to the mix. We always enjoy putting the clubs together and love your feedback when you join us to taste them. We hope you can drop by on Thursday and give them a try!

Monte Tondo, Soave Brut — Monte Tondo is known for its classic, stylish Soaves made of 100% Garganega. They are also one of only about six producers to make a sparkling version of the wine. Theirs is expressive and complex and a delightful bubbly for holiday gatherings, or for whenever the mood strikes.

Thomas-Labaille, “Les Monts Damnés” Sancerre — The Sancerre region of France’s eastern Loire Valley produces what many feel is the quintessential expression of Sauvignon Blanc. Grown on the chalky limestone and flint soils, Sancerres are racy, focused, and elegant. This one, from a steep site known as “the damn mountains,” is one of our perennial favorites (and always pretty limited in supply).

Domaine de l’Amauve, Vaucluse — From a winery based in the lovely little village of Séguret, next to Gigondas in the Côtes du Rhône, comes this dark, aromatic blend of 80% Grenache and 20% Syrah. With notes of licorice and spice, it would be great with charcuterie or Provençal dishes, such as ratatouille.

Herdade do Esporão, Reserva Tinto — This wine from the Alentejo region of southeast Portugal is a blend of Alicante Bouschet, Aragonez (aka Tempranillo), Trincadeira, and Cabernet Sauvignon, sourced from estate grown fruit. It is rich and ripe, with complex flavors of dark fruit and spice.

* Bodegas Maset, Monastrell  — Bodegas Maset has produced wines in the Catalonian Penedès region of northeast Spain for over two centuries. This 100% Monastrell (aka Mourvèdre across the Pyrenees in France) is rich, dark, and savory—perfect for roasted meats, polenta, or spicy dishes.

Giuseppe Lonardi, "Bepi" Rosso Veronese — Veneto winemaker Giuseppe Londardi is known for his Amarones and for his flagship wine, Privilegia. “Bepi” is his first new wine in 20 years and is basically a “baby Privilegia.” A blend of 75% Corvina and 25% Rondinella aged in oak for about one year, it is bold and flavorful, with “the mysterious, alluring flavors of his native Corvina varietal.”

* Cedergreen, Thuja, 2004 — This blend of 80% Merlot and 20% Cab Sauv from several top Washington vineyards had some serious age on it when we featured it in the club back in 2017. That was over a year ago, but it is still tasting fresh and inviting, with black cherry flavors and nice mellow tannins. We thought we’d revisit it and see how well Washington wines can age!

Seven Sinners, Petite Sirah — We finish with this old vine Petite Sirah from the Lodi region, in California’s Central Valley. The warm days and cool nights here produced a rich, opulent, yet food friendly (read: modest in alcohol) wine with soft, spicy undertones. Perfect for a long, cold night by the fire.
