The Centre for Defence Industry Capability (CDIC) would like to wish you a very merry Christmas and a happy new year.
Our Contact Centre will remain open on weekdays other than public holidays to take your enquiries, however the CDIC will observe a scheduled stand down period commencing from close of business on 24 December 2018 to 1 January 2019 inclusive, during which time we will not be responding to enquiries or assessing applications for services and grants. The Defence Innovation Hub (Hub) will observe a scheduled stand down period commencing from midday on 24 December 2018 to 1 January 2019 inclusive. During the shutdown period innovation proposals and Request for Proposal responses can still be submitted. If you have a great idea that could contribute to the enhancement of Defence capability visit the Defence Innovation Portal to submit your innovation proposal. The Hub will resume its consideration of proposals from Wednesday 2 January 2019.

New grant for SMEs contributing to
Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities
Does your business contribute to Defence Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities?
The Minister for Defence Industry, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, has launched a new grant offering small and medium sized businesses up to $1 million in matched funding to invest in projects that build capabilities aligned with the initial ten Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities. It’s part of the support for Australia’s Sovereign Industrial Capability Priorities announced earlier this year in the Defence Industrial Capability Plan.
Research proposals are invited from small businesses and universities to help Defence devise novel ways of integrating advanced materials onto military platforms. It’s a joint initiative between Australia’s Defence Science and Technology and the United Kingdom’s Defence and Security Accelerator to uncover innovative joining technologies that address the challenging demands of the defence environment. Initial funding of up to $900,000 is available under the Next Generation Technologies Fund through the Small Business Innovation Research for Defence (SBIRD) program.
Call for proposals: Intelligent Decision Superiority Research Network
The Next Generation Technologies Fund is inviting Australian universities and industry to participate in this new research network. The network aims to develop automated systems to analyse, fuse and understand large volumes of data and free up Defence personnel to respond much faster to potential threats.
The CDIC welcomes the new Deputy Secretary Capability Acquisition and Sustainment Group, Mr Tony Fraser, as Co-Chair of the CDIC Advisory Board.
Mr Fraser brings extensive Defence and industry experience to the board. Following a distinguished 34-year career as an Australian Army officer, culminating in his role as Head of the Helicopter Systems Division in the Defence Materiel Organisation, he was Managing Director Airbus Australia Pacific prior to taking up his current position.
Leidos contracted under Global Supply Chain Program
Leidos is the latest defence prime contractor helping Australian small to medium sized companies win work in their international supply chains. Over 170 businesses and universities have benefited from the program and been awarded close to $1.1 billion in contracts.
Autonomous Warrior 2018 highlights autonomous systems capability
The latest developments in autonomous capabilities for the ground, air and water environments were on display at Autonomous Warrior 2018, held during November at HMAS Creswell, Jervis Bay.
The partnership between Defence and industry to deliver the transformational F-35 Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) capability to Australia is being showcased in a series of videos in the lead up to the Australian International Airshow at Avalon. There are Australian-built components in every F-35 aircraft produced, with over 50 Australian companies involved and total Australian production contracts now reaching over AUD$1.2 billion.
Defence Innovation Hub invests in leading edge technologies
Five Australian businesses have been awarded contracts with a combined value of more than $12 million through the Defence Innovation Hub. Sentient Vision Systems, Thomas Global Systems, Penten, Ocius and Amatek Design will further develop their innovative technologies to support the Australian Defence Force. Defence Innovation Hub Conference videos now available
The Department of Defence hosted its second Defence Innovation Hub Industry Update on 10 October 2018 in Canberra. Videos of the event presentations are now available.
Jenkins Defence Systems (JEDS) has used Capability Improvement Grant funding through the CDIC to up-skill two electrical engineers with specialised training for the company's near field scanning anechoic chamber.
