Welcome to the Northey Street City Farm E-news for December 2018

AROUND THE FARM

In the season of giving, the Farm has put a call out for outdoor furniture. If you have any chairs or tables you could donate to the Farm, please bring them in Tuesday to Thursday between 9am-4pm. We would be very grateful!

As December approaches we are all encouraged to be consumerist and buy unnecessary items and often harmful products to the earth. We encourage you to think about what you are purchasing this season and to perhaps make a gift for a loved one or support local artists or stalls that sell ethical products.

Every Sunday at our markets we have an amazing range of organic produce and groceries. Perhaps this festive season make up a gift pack with organic jams and preserves, dark organic chocolate, seasonal macadamia nuts, spiced chai, top quality olive oil or any other delicious organic food on offer.

What about giving an ethical gift of handmade jewelry, essential oils, coconut soaps, a bees wax candle or wraps, handmade notebook, ethical plant based beauty products, a reusable shopping bag, little felt shoes for a baby or  select something from a range of second hand goods on offer.

Maybe you would like to give a living plant this year? Pop into the City Farm for a beautiful plant. Try a native or fruit tree. The Nursery also offers gift vouchers, so your loved ones can choose their own. Why not get a rosemary bush to use as a Christmas tree and then plant it in your garden. You can even come and visit Bob and the gorgeous families in the Earth Arts area and make a clay sculpture to give to a loved one. We don't have to get caught up in buying plastic expensive goods to show our love. This season try to give ethical goods.

November has been a lively month in the nursery with the launch of nursery education on Saturdays and Sundays. So far we’ve had Richard in to split our native beehive with great attendance from locals wanting to learn more about native bee keeping. A few weeks later Richard was back to harvest honey from one of our hives and again there was a great turn out of people who came along to watch the process and taste the delicious and complex native honey. FYI, there’s still a few prized jars of native honey available to purchase in the nursery! And Simon from Vegepod was in last Saturday to do a demo and talk all things Vegepod to some keen community members. Thank you to everyone who has come along so far and keep an eye out for upcoming talks and demos on Saturdays and Sundays in the nursery!

With Christmas just around the corner we have your ethical gift giving sorted. Some of our top picks this year are Composta (composting worm farm and veggie garden in one compact unit), Vegepods (raised wicking beds with pest-proof covers), native bee hives, gardening and permaculture books, NSCF organic cotton canvas carry bags, ONYA reusable produce and bread bags, nursery gift vouchers, pre-picked herb packs and much more! Come in and we’d be happy to help you pick the perfect gift for your loved ones.

We are still in the process of clearing out our propagation shed. If you would like any old plastic pots or trays please come and let us know. We’d be happy to give some away!

Remember to keep up with the mulching this month! See you in the nursery soon.
