Growing our leadership capabilities
Sport Wellington, in collaboration with Sport NZ and other key partners, have spent over 30 months developing and testing the leadership framework which saw over 1,500 people consulted.
The Leadership Framework for Sport and Recreation in Aotearoa (Leadership Framework) has been created by the sector, for people who work and volunteer in sport and recreation to help develop effective leadership. The resources for it, called ‘Puna’, represent a spring of leadership resources and cover Leading Self, Leading Teams, Leading Leaders, Leading an Organisation, and Governing an Organisation.
This month, Sport Wellington Wairarapa hosted an Orientation workshop to introduce attendees to the Framework and its resources so that they can go back to their sports and clubs to champion it.

Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation Strategy
Last month, Sport and Recreation Minister Grant Robertson launched the Women and Girls in Sport and Active Recreation Strategy, clarifying the outcomes that Government are seeking to achieve for women and girls in sport and active recreation.
The Government Strategy provides an approach that promotes a focus on partnership with those interested in enabling women and girls to realise their full potential in and through sport and active recreation.
Sport NZ has also announced commitments that will bring the strategy to life and help achieve these outcomes. Once more details are released, Sport Wellington would be open to considering partnering with others on an application for the contestable funding.

Embracing the benefits of diversity on Cricket Boards
The NZC Women and Governance Project has a focus on growing the capability and diversity of those on Cricket Boards so that cricket is seen as a Game for all New Zealanders.
The NZC Board has gone from 11% to 44% females, Major Associations have moved from 4% to 28%, and District Associations from 7% to 14%. That’s a total of 43 women now involved in bringing different perspectives to cricket Board tables for the benefit of the game.
As part of the project, resources have been developed which are available to everyone.

Have your say - Sport Integrity Review
Sport NZ are seeking submissions (through completion of survey questions) on a discussion document to assist them to understand the size and nature of any risks and issues with sport integrity in New Zealand. The first phase of the review will assess the current environment, identify priority areas where current policies and protections may be insufficient, and gather evidence to support future interventions.
The consultation period closes 5pm on Tuesday 11 December 2018. When Sport NZ has analysed the submissions it will recommend priority areas for further work to the Sport NZ Board – so take this opportunity to have your say!

Volunteer acknowledgement - Bubs Rewiti
Sport Wellington's Senior Volunteer Adviser, Ken Allen, has developed a case study of a volunteer who has made a positive difference to her sport and its people.
People volunteer to make a difference, and by understanding that difference by telling a story, we get a powerful and meaningful acknowledgement of volunteer work.
This is a story of Bubs Rewiti, told by herself and people around her. Watch the video

Wellington Softball Association
The Wellington Softball Association recently shared with us their success story of how a volunteer plan has significantly improved their volunteer management processes. We met with WSA in early 2018 to review their initial plan and gave them support to build actions and targets into that plan, along with best practice, such as story-telling, for their volunteer acknowledgement.

Ultimate frisbee – Self-refereeing and the Spirit award |
Ultimate frisbee is a unique sport that is popular on the Wellington scene and is increasingly being recognised on the world scale. Jessica (Jes) Thompson, one of our Sport Wellington staff is a keen player at a social level so we asked her to explain to us about self-refereeing and the Spirit award.
“There’s a huge frisbee community in Wellington and it’s easy to get into. It’s a non-contact sport so you have to actively stop attacking the disc if you’re about to cause contact.”

Supporting a healthy, active region
You’ll start to notice from next month that Sport Wellington now has a tagline!
A common misconception with our name is that we just deal with sport – but as you (hopefully) know, our engagement covers health, education, physical activity and active recreation, as well as sport.
Don’t worry we didn’t pay millions to an advertising agency, instead we asked our staff for their input and used our strategic plan as the basis.
