Moving beyond the frontline: Working to enable Indigenous leadership in the health system

In partnership with Wujal Wujal Aboriginal Shire Council (WWASC), WorkAbility was invited to present at the National Conference on Indigenous Health Workforce Leadership: Moving Beyond the Frontline in Brisbane on 2 November 2018.

Sponsored by the UQ Poche Centre for Indigenous Health, the conference examined the critical success factors for enabling Indigenous leadership across the health system, with a focus on changing the narrative - what will it take to enable Indigenous health professionals to rise into these positions?

Far North Queensland WorkAbility Co-ordinator, Dr Deb Selway, presented the Wujal Wujal Workforce Pilot #ProperStrongWay session to an audience of 70, in collaboration with WWASC CEO, Eileen Deemal-Hall.

Musical chairs: Job seekers speed through interviews in Cairns Jobs Roadshow

More than 380 job interviews took place at WorkAbility’s Jobs Roadshow in Cairns on Friday 16 November. Pre-screened jobseekers spoke to 20 recruiters from 10 local disability services employers on the day, with 60 per cent of the 70 people interviewed offered a second interview.

Far North Queensland WorkAbility Co-ordinator Dr Deb Selway says pre-screening jobseekers is crucial to the success of each Jobs Roadshow.

“Our partners for the Cairns event, Workways and Max Employment, worked closely with the jobseekers to help them shine their light on the day, and we thank them for that,” she said.

Queensland Government announces more support for NDIS workforce training

In the lead up to the Premier’s Skills Summit on Wednesday 28 November, the Queensland Government announced additional measures to help prepare Queensland’s future workforce for the NDIS.

Minister for Training and Skills Development, Shannon Fentiman, says the Palaszczuk government is moving to implement 11 recommended strategies outlined in the NDIS Workforce through Traineeships report, released by Jobs Queensland in August.

“With the roll-out of the NDIS, we know that there will be an increased demand for skilled workers in the health care industry,” Ms Fentiman said.

Tearing down barriers: New federal taskforce to improve employment prospects for Australians with a disability

The NDIS Participant Employment Taskforce, announced last week by the Morrison Government, is being setup to look at how NDIS participants can be best supported to seek employment.

Minister for Families and Social Services, Paul Fletcher, and Assistant Minister for Social Services, Housing and Disability Services, Sarah Henderson, made the announcement at the National Disability Services CEO Forum in Melbourne.

“Despite their enthusiasm, commitment and good reputation as employees, people with disability too often find it hard to get into the workforce,” Mr Fletcher said.

About 14 per cent of working age people in Australia have a disability but people with disability comprise only nine per cent of the workforce, he said.

2017-2018 NDIA Annual Report available now

The National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) has published its 2017-18 Annual Report, which provides a comprehensive overview of the Agency and National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS).

Their census data reveals a developing trend of diversity among the NDIA's 2,634 employees, 1,799 contractors, and 3,439 partners. 19 per cent identified as having an ongoing disability, 3 per cent identified as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, and 6 per cent identified as LGBTIQ+.

The average length of service stands at 21 months - an upward trend that affirms a strong and committed emerging workforce, with plenty of room for further growth.

It is the NDIA's fifth Annual Report and reflects the NDIA's continuing commitment to listen to and engage with participants, providers and sector stakeholders.
