HELLO FROM THE OFFICE
We're thrilled about a number of things this month... firstly, one of our long-term sponsors, Clifton Hill North Fitzroy Community Bank branch of Bendigo Bank (AKA Clifroy), has just released its publication Celebrating Our Community, which provides a picture of all the social enterprises the bank supports. Since opening its doors in 2006, the branch has given back over $2 million to the local community in Melbourne. Books in Homes has been one of the lucky recipients. Clifroy has supported 600 children since 2014 to the tune of nearly $55,500. We're exceptionally appreciative of this amazing contribution (just click the image above to find out more). We enjoy telling our Sponsors' stories in THE BRIDGE and are poised to give you even more fantastic news in the next few months! Secondly, Books in Homes was invited to present a session at the annual Australian Cartoonists Association Conference a few weeks ago, which was held at Old Parliament House in Canberra. I had a wonderful time speaking to a receptive audience and was delighted with the number of enquiries we received from cartoonists who were interested in becoming Role Models. Most of all I was impressed with the intelligence and wit of this talented homegrown group of creatives. Finally, one of our Book Selection Committee members Sandra Stonham is raising funds during December for Books in Homes. She is inviting the extended Books in Homes family to attend her annual event Christmas Lights on Jubilee from 1 to 26 December 2018 (details below). The Opening Night is this Saturday 1 December. We'll be popping by so if you spot us please say hi.

CHRISTMAS LIGHTS ON JUBILEE
Book Selection Committee Member and Early Childhood Educator, Sandra Stonham and her family are launching a special fundraising campaign for Books in Homes during December.

You are invited to OPENING NIGHT of Christmas Lights on Jubilee tomorrow on Saturday 1 December 2018 at 7:30pm
The celebration will be held at 101 Jubilee Avenue Beverley Park NSW 2217, and will run until midnight on Boxing Day on Wednesday 26 December 2018. Check out the gorgeous Christmas light display and also help Books in Homes in the process. You can drop a coin in the bucket or donate via the GiveNow page.

All the proceeds will go towards helping Books in Homes Australia fulfil its vision of creating an Australia where every child and family has access to books in the home!

Looking forward to seeing you there.

MOUNT GAMBIER LIBRARY SPREADING JOY WITH BOOKS IN HOMES
Story and photo contributed by Kelly Lynch, Children's Services Development Coordinator, Mount Gambier Library

For the past four years, the City of Mount Gambier, through the Mount Gambier Library, has partnered with the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier and the Department of Education to successfully deliver the Books in Homes Program to over 400 school students. Five local schools have been involved in supporting students’ literacy development and kick-starting their own personal libraries, including the Gordon Education Centre—the only special school in the Limestone Coast Region.

The Gordon Education Centre enjoys many services provided by the Mount Gambier Library, and the Books in Homes Program has been extremely well received, providing books-of-choice for students to keep, who otherwise may not have access to such resources. They have just received their second book bag, containing their selected titles, at the Book Giving Assembly.

None of this would have been possible without our major Sponsor, the Rotary Club of Mount Gambier, who have generously donated over  $18,5000 to the cause. This term, they even contributed a top up to their ever generous funding to involve the whole of the Gordon Education Centre school in the Program, including all their 75 students, covering all years.

As Linda Marano, Special Education Teacher at the Gordon Education Centre says, "Books in Homes has brought happiness and joy to our school community! To say we are grateful is an understatement!"

The Mount Gambier Library works within its diverse community to provide a safe and inclusive space, and the Books in Homes Program helps us support those goals.

ROLE MODEL CORNER
Name: Serena Geddes
Location: Melbourne, NSW
Job: Author / Illustrator

What part of your work most interests you?
The illustration and storyboarding stage is always fun for me. Giving yourself free range to explore one’s imagination with no filters means you can create to your heart's content.

How did you choose your career path?
A new position I’d started ended unexpectedly and I found myself at a crossroads. Did I want to continue on the path of administration roles or try my hand at picture books? I'm so glad I chose books as it’s been my career now for nine years.

What do you do to relax?
Play softball, walk along the beach, and have bubble baths.

Who has inspired you most in life? Why?
My family—they're the perfect combination of quirky and fun, which makes a brilliant platform for interpretation, casting them all as either humorous characters or villains in my books. And in recent years a close friend of mine has been an inspiration—she encourages the stories inside to be drawn on paper and that's always fun.

What did you most enjoy about school?
Playtime and recess, because my imagination was allowed to run free and our school was the perfect place to have many adventures climbing, chasing and playing.

What did you hate most about school?
Homework and numerous subjects that weren’t art. Art was never a major focus at school and I regret in those days it wasn’t given as much encouragement as in schools today.

What advice would you give your 10 year old self?
Your family and peers are advising you as best they can with the life experiences they have, but trust that within you, is your own story, your own talents that will take you on a journey no one else has dared to go. Trust what unfolds knowing that we all have something unique to share with the world.

What three children’s books were your favourites when you were at school?
I grew up reading my brothers comics collection (Garfield, Archie, Superman, Batman). Enid Blyton’s The Faraway Tree was an older favourite as we had a huge peach tree, which I would imagine was The Faraway Tree in our back yard.

What would you take to a desert island?
Endless supply of paper, pencils and paints… is that categorised as one thing? A multi-skilled builder/handyman/chef… if you know of this man please send him on the same flight to the island. Oh, and my new puppy Bodhi!

And just for fun, choose your preference below:
Cats or dogs? Dogs (though I love both).
Ice cream or cake? Ice cream cake is a thing so I'll have that thanks!
Plays or musicals? Musicals.
Football or soccer? Neither—softball or baseball.
Tea or coffee? Coffee.
Sailing boat or speed boat? They'll both sink in a storm so neither.  😟
Chocolate or chips? Easy... chocolate!
TV or computer games? TV.
Book or TV? TV unless on a holiday… then a book.
Swimming or cycling? Cycling.

How
THE BRIDGE
Got Its Name

Books in Homes Australia named its ezine THE BRIDGE after receiving a beautiful letter from Walgett Community College Primary School a few years ago. It tells a wonderful tale about a much loved mentor from town called Mrs Robyn Pearson. It's a story about being unable to read, getting lost, signs, levies and bridges. Want to read the full letter? Then click the link below.
