Hello from all of us here at the Irish Family History Centre and welcome to the latest edition of our newsletter!

Today is the first day of December, and we hope anyone celebrating had a lovely Thanksgiving! Here in Dublin, we've already got our Christmas lights up around the city and they are simply gorgeous...

Read on to learn our Research Tip of the week from Expert Genealogist, Stephen Peirce, who uses multiple births to prove family connections. Also, our Spotlight on Publications this week looks at the landed gentry of Ireland.

We have some information on a few events around Dublin, including the latest in our Expert Workshop Series at the Royal Irish Academy. Expert Genealogist Maura Flood tells us all about a recent consultation, where she managed to use a surname to break down her client's brick wall. You can also read an article written by Maura for the Genealogy segment of the Irish Echo, on tips for researching in America.

Finally, we've got the latest version of our digital magazine, Irish Lives Remembered, in case you missed it. It's a great read, with lots of brilliant pieces from some of the biggest names in Irish Genealogy.

Enjoy!

What's in a Surname?

SPOTLIGHT ON PUBLICATIONS

This week's Spotlight focuses on Irish families in 1899. Burke's Landed Gentry of Ireland is a genealogical and heraldic history of the landed gentry of Ireland.
It contains detailed genelogies of all the 'landed gentry' in Ireland in 1899 and Coats of Arms for the majority of names appear throughout.
Despite the title, there are wider groups detailed that may well have been of more modest means from junior branches and in-laws.
As a source, it is important for all those who believed their ancestors were part of this social class.

Maura works down at the Irish Family History Centre and, as well as frequently helping our American visitors with their Irish family history, Maura also has American branches of her own family tree, which she has managed to research and connect with.
