Little has been published on what Florida State may do with its open AD chair, but FSU Prez Thrasher provided some insight on the state of the Seminoles in a discussion with Warchant's Schoffel. Notable thoughts from Thrasher on the AD job, "We’ve made it through football, but there are still a few other things going on. I think after the first of the year, we’ll probably do an evaluation. See what we need to do at that point. See how David (Coburn - Interim AD) feels about it, and we’ll go from there." Points to the coming ACC Network & "a few other revenue-generating contracts he'd like to see Coburn square away before making a move. Thrasher says he's had plenty of conversation with FB HC Taggart on the challenges his program faced this season & how it looks for the future, expects some ACs "to go other places." Overall on FB, "I know we need to make adjustments. But I’m confident -- I’m absolutely confident -- that Coach Taggart understands that, too." More. (link)
Northwestern AD Phillips back on the wire in a continued conversation with the university's student newspaper. On tomorrow's Big Ten FB Championship Game appearance against Ohio State, "Saturday, we’ll shine a light on a world-class university that is trying to change the world, trying to change lives, trying to educate, teach, research. The opportunity that football and sports brings to a university like Northwestern is that chance to show people that maybe do not know as much about Northwestern a little bit about (who we are)." (link)
The Oregonian's Canzano with part three of his look inside the Pac-12 & former Utah AD Hill offers perspective on tight finances even while paying FB HCs big money, "All the ADs are trying to save nickels and dimes. People may say, 'What are you talking about? You're paying your football coach $2 million a year.' Believe me, when your revenue isn't as high as others you have to take a look at spending." Canzano runs through FB recruiting dynamics in the league compared to other P5 conferences, including the SEC, as well as how smaller stadiums & attendance figures create smaller pots of money to pay coaches. Canzano says insiders at DirecTV indicate a deal could have gotten done for Pac-12 Networks distribution, but Commish Scott isn't sure what could have been done differently, "We went to them first, before Dish, before anybody else, and they weren't interested." An unnamed conference executive believes the league overestimated the level of fervor Pac-12 fans would leverage on DirecTV. Lots more. (link)
More records in Louisville MBB's escort saga again indicate central figure Powell told The Compliance Group's Smrt that former Cards AC McGee told her former HC Pitino knew all the details of the situation. Pitino's response, "That's a complete lie. I've already taken a polygraph, and Andre would never have said that. (Tom) Jurich would have fired me immediately if that was true. A hundred people have been interviewed and all said I didn't know, and the NCAA believes. ... If Smrt believed those lies, I would have been fired immediately." From Police notes in reference to former AC Balado, now the HC at Arkansas State, "He stated that he has never met nor spoken with Katina Powell. He has no idea how or why she would reference a ‘Coach Mike’ in her book." (link)
San Jose State scores a $2M commitment from alumnus Hopkirk and his wife Murphy, with the cash ear-marked for the FB program & the new FB operations center. From Hopkirk: "San Jose State must have the facilities in place to attract the best and brightest student-athletes. Hopefully our donation will enhance Spartan football's chance to be a championship program and result in many more talented student-athletes proudly earning their diplomas from San Jose State University." (link)
Old Dominion's campus was closed yesterday due to an "anonymous security threat." A WBB game with Longwood & Wrestling match against N.C. State were both cancelled. ODU will reopen today after law enforcement checked everything out. (link, link)
There are more bowl-eligible programs than there are spots, leaving some, like Army West Point, BYU, Miami (OH) & Wyoming wondering exactly where they'll end up. Both Cadets AD Corrigan & Cougars AD Holmoe note the stress of watching the scoreboard last weekend to see which other programs would get to six wins & there are still some dominoes to fall with this weekend's slate of title games. Corrigan points to FB's upward trajectory as the next round of bowl tie-in negotiations are around the corner for 2020 to 2025, "we can go into that cycle as an independent showing that we have been bowl eligible, showing that we’re a viable team to fill that slot." (link)

And every day he’s been here working and recruiting for UNT. No need to fret over rumors." (link); Army West Point AD Corrigan on getting HC Monken to stick, "It just seems his appreciation for who we are, what we are and what we are doing, developing Army leaders, fits really well for him. Now, it's a matter of making sure we are doing everything that we can to accomplish what he needs and what we need for the staff." (link); Kansas State AD Taylor & HC Snyder have yet to meet as Taylor indicates Snyder wants more time before the pair chat. (link)
The Players' Tribune hosts WBB HCs Staley (South Carolina), Legette-Jack (Buffalo), McPhee-McCuin (Ole Miss) & Blair-Lewis (Bethune Cookman) for a conversation on 'Coaching While Black,' moderated by former multi-stop HC Peck. Staley opens with thoughts on how 10 years ago it was "popular" to hire a black HC, but now that's no longer the case. McPhee-McCuin says the first thing she said to Rebels AD Bjork when he reached out about the opening in Oxford was, "What took you so long to call me?" Each HC discusses the dynamic of being an African-American leader on their respective campuses & what challenges/opportunities come along with job. Notable quote, "You're still at a disadvantage when you're at a predominantly white University. A lot of times people don't know how to work with you." Lots more in this interesting watch. (link)
Former Miami (FL) FB HC Golden continues to push the university for $3M he believes he's owed from his time leading the Canes. UM disagrees, "The university has fulfilled all obligations to coach Golden and intends to continue to do so. The university intends to defend this litigation, which it believes is without merit. […]  While receiving substantial termination payments under the agreement, Golden has made a series of threats and demands seeking additional compensation in conflict with terms of the agreement." At the center of the controversy are mitigation terms since Golden landed as an AC with the Detroit Lions. (link); Also from Coral Gables, MBB student-athlete Hernandez remains sidelined in connection with MBB-FBI developments, UM AD James says his leadership team continues to be in contact with the NCAA. (link)
UC San Diego AD Edwards reiterates that a national search will be conducted for the Tritons new Women's Soccer HC position, but AC Jones, who led the team to a 19-3-2 record and a National Semifinals appearance as interim, says she has applied for the job. Former HC McManus, who resigned before the season began, believes "Jonesy" deserves it: "If she's not given it, it's a travesty. Quite honestly, there are going to be a great amount of people who apply for it. But there's nobody who knows more about UCSD and how this team works than Jonesy." As for Edwards: "We'll do a national search. Jonesy will be a part of it, I'm sure. We'll see how it plays out." A bit more. (link)
More Personnel: Northeastern Men's Hockey HC Madigan gets extended through 2022-23, as does AHC Keefe. (link); Liberty Men's Soccer HC Alder will step into a new role with the Flames Club. Probably not at the moment." (link); Interesting thread of data from Fox Sports EVP Mulvihill on engagement data for sports on TV this year, combining NFL & college FB live minutes watched Fox tops the list at 105.4B, followed by CBS at 77.8B, ESPN at 57.2B, NBC at 53.7B & ABC at 34.2B. (link); Sports TV scheduling expert Sarzyniak puts together post-season data recaps for number of appearances overall & on which network partners for each school in the ACC & Big 12. Others coming, per Sarz. (link, link)
Seven former Stanford wrestlers are alleging a university math lecturer harassed them for years and would show up in the team showers after practice to "ogle." The accused, Hung Le, has a 25-year affiliation with the team but denies any wrongdoing. The group says some of the coaches knew about the situation, but ignored it. Stanford opened a Title IX investigation into the matter this summer and could wrap it up as early as today. Cardinal Deputy AD Dunkley: "We never want to see these kinds of allegations, but if and when they do happen we take them seriously, we investigate them thoroughly and we take appropriate action." (link)
Big day tomorrow for Weber State as the Wildcats host Southeast Missouri State in a second round FCS Playoffs match-up set for a 2p kick. Later in the evening, MBB will tip at home against in-state big-brand BYU. WSU AD Bovee: "People are saying they’re excited to spend the day with us and it’s been fun to get ready for. […] I can see the pride in all our staff, from a person who works in the insurance office as an hourly employee to (head athletic trainer) Joel Bass, who’s been here almost 30 years. America East and its Student-Athlete Advisory Committee are working together on the establishment of a mental health initiative, #BetterTo9ether. Commish Huchthausen: "There is no issue of more importance than the overall well-being of our student-athletes. I commend our America East SAAC on creating the #BetterTo9ether initiative and leading the way to prioritize mental health across our conference through dialogue, activities and awareness. Our student-athletes will be better individuals and teammates as a result of these efforts, which we believe will improve their collegiate experience and position them for lifelong success." A major component of the initiative will be the #BetterTo9ether Games, which will take place on league campuses this spring, "pitting student-athletes of all class years, genders and sports against each other in activities that will promote a fun, positive and inclusive environment." Each school gets a $500 grant towards the event from the conference office. (link)
JUCO FB in Arizona is in a state of flux as a number of programs, including high-profile Pima Community College, have dropped the sport due to financial concerns. Eastern Arizona is concerned about maintaining membership in the Western States Football League that only counts Snow College & Arizona Western as fellow members at the moment. NJCAA Executive Director Parker: "It’s a difficult situation right now. We’ll have to work with different conferences on evaluating their needs and helping to facilitate more games for them to play and to fill a schedule. It’ll take some creative and out-of-the-box thinking." More. (link)
