My Health Record
In response to community discussion and concern on privacy and security, the Australian government has extended its deadline until 31 January 2019, for Australians to opt out of the My Health Record System. Legislation is also before the parliament to strengthen protections. You can find updates and details of the changes here.

Breast Screening
Breast cancer is the most common life threatening cancer for women and one in eight women in Australia will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Having a screening mammogram (breast x-ray) every two years significantly increases the chance of a woman surviving breast cancer and reduces the amount of treatment required. More than 75% of breast cancers occur in women over the age of 50. Research shows that screening is most effective for this age group. BreastScreen WA encourages women to make an informed decision about having a mammogram. Please go to the 'Upcoming Community Events'  link to access dates and bookings for breast screening in Lancelin.

Youth Mental Health
A record number of 28,286 young people between the ages of 15 to 19 from right across Australia took part in Mission Australia’s Youth Survey 2018
The results show that the number of young people reporting mental health as the most important issue in Australia today has risen by 10% in one year. Four in ten (43%) young people identified mental health as the top issue facing Australia today – up from 33% in 2017 and doubling since 2016. This is the first time that mental health has topped the list of most important national issues in every state and territory, as well as for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people.The top three personal concerns at the national level this year were coping with stress (43%), school or study problems (34%) and mental health (31%). In previous years, the third most cited item was body image (30%), which moved to the fourth spot in 2018. Each of the top four personal concerns have strong links to mental health. The full report and state by state breakdowns are free to access here.

The free tests will be conducted online using Sound Scouts, a tablet-based game that detects hearing issues in children. Find more information about the initiative here.

TIPS

Self-care Before The Holidays
You’re already exhausted from the year and December hasn’t even started yet, right? There’s lots you can do to get on top of fatigue and busy-ness before you burn out, like prioritising chillout time, keeping up your hobbies, and even just making dinner from scratch. It sounds like a lot to make time for, but it’ll make all your December commitments easier to handle. Not sure what kind of self-care suits you? Try the self-care quizzes for parents or young people to find your style, AND check out the self-care advice for young people too.

Managing Everyone’s Interests
There will be times where a committee member may have a conflict of interest in a matter being considered by their association or club. This may be the result of their personal employment, relationships with private businesses, family or friendships. It is not wrong to have a conflict of interest but it is important to manage it properly and in a transparent manner.  It protects the individual and the organisation. Where a committee member finds they have a material personal interest in any matter being discussed at a committee meeting they must:
  1. immediately declare the interest to the rest of the committee;
  2. ensure the minutes for the meeting record the disclosure;
  3. leave the meeting while the matter is discussed and voted on by the rest of the committee and note that in the minutes; and
  4. the interest should also be disclosed to the members at the next general meeting held by the Association
If potential conflicts arise on a regular basis consider creating a register and have it as a standing item on the meeting agenda.

Managing Personal Information - What are your protection obligations when collecting and storing member information?
Collecting the personal information of participants registering to join a club, competition or event has become standard practice across sport. But that practice could get you into hot water if you don’t comply with the Commonwealth Privacy Act 1988 (Act) which governs the way you must handle the information you collect, and report any privacy breaches. For More Information.

Movie Fundraising:
Movies are great fun, whether indoors or out, and a great way to get communities together. For the purposes of copyright in Australia, a screening of a film outside the home is generally regarded as “in public” Any person or organisation wishing to screen a film in public must get permission from the copyright owner and pay a licence fee. Roadshow PPL (a division of Roadshow Films) is Australasia’s largest “non-theatrical” distributor, representing many of the leading Hollywood studios and international & local independent studios and distributors in the area of film for use outside the cinema and home. Whilst the showing of a film in public requires permission and payment of fees, they can provide content or simply a licence to perform a film for a variety of markets and purposes.
