On November 1 and 2 TRLN hosted a Liaison Institute presented by the Association of Research Libraries (ARL) as part of ARL Academy’s Reimagining the Library Liaison program. 44 subject and functional liaisons from Duke, NCCU, NCSU, and UNC-Chapel Hill libraries took part in the highly interactive 1.5 day workshop designed to help participants achieve the following:

  • Understand the changing nature of higher education and the resulting needs of students, faculty, and researchers.
  • Learn how to evaluate and demonstrate their impact on teaching, learning, and research.
  • Apply a framework for rebalancing portfolios towards the most high-value and high-impact activities.
  • Develop ideas for evolving the liaison job description, ongoing professional development programs, and user engagement strategies to meet campus needs in this changing environment.

TRLN working groups, interest groups, and central office staff are hard at work preparing a number of exciting opportunities for you to learn, grow, and network in 2019. Dates, locations, and registration processes for these events are still being worked out, so we encourage you to keep an eye on our website and the monthly newsletter for details as they are announced.
  • Cultural Humility Workshop (Spring TBD) - Presented by Nicky Andrews, an NCSU Libraries Fellow at NCSU and Sunny Kim, a Teen Services Librarian at The Seattle Public Library, the session will introduce cultural humility, clarify how it is different from cultural competence, and demonstrate why it is an essential framework for resisting racism and bias in library work. Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the cultural humility framework, name and reflect on their own privilege and identities, and get practice in interrupting scenarios of bias and problematic behavior. The presenters will discuss some of the challenges of this work and answer any questions participants may have about designing their own cultural humility training. Lastly, the workshop will provide resources and recommendations for those who want to continue to engage in cultivating cultural humility.
  • Linked Data Seminar Series Session 2 (Spring TBD) - The first session in this series took place in September 2018 and provided technical services para-professionals and professionals an opportunity to learn about linked data and its impact on technical services workflows. The second session will offer an opportunity for information technology professionals and technical services professionals to exchange information, ideas, and perspectives on linked data with a goal of developing a shared understanding of opportunities.
  • Library Management Skills Institute I: The Manager, presented by DeEtta Jones & Associates (April 8-10, 2019, Rizzo Center) - This highly interactive 3-day institute is designed to equip participants to recognize different behavioral style preferences, identify how people are motivated and find ways to increase staff engagement, identify how to play an influencer role in pursuing organizational goals, and give feedback in a way that minimizes resistance and builds commitment. Read more about the institute here.
As you have hopefully heard at least once during the last six months, TRLN will soon implement a number of changes recommended by the Advisory Council as the result of many conversations over the last year with individuals and groups involved in TRLN collaborative activities. Documents and visuals outlining these changes are available to view in this Google Drive folder

Most of our December newsletter will be dedicated to more
detailed information, resources, and FAQs related to those changes. It will also include information on how to propose a new interest group or join an existing one.

Please look out for the newsletter on December 14! In the meantime, if you have any questions feel free to contact any TRLN staff member.
