Asian Studies Opportunities

December 3, 2018

As you finish essays and research papers related to Asia, consider submitting one to win an award and small scholarship for your hard work. Find details below.

Study Asia with Core or Upper Level Courses

You can study Asia and satisfy a variety of your core requirements or upper level requirements this Spring. Seats remain available in core courses such as Survey of Asian Art (FA credit) and Religions of the World (H credit). Some upper level courses with seats available include Japanese Aesthetics (JA 390) and History of Contemporary China (HY 307), along with upper level language courses in Chinese and Japanese. All of these courses also count towards the Asian Studies Minor. For a full list of Asian Studies courses for Spring 2019, go to the Asian Studies website

Study in Asia

If you are interested in studying in Asia in Summer 2019, get started now with your planning. You can go on a UA Faculty-Led trip with other students from UA, or you can go through one of the Affiliated, Direct Enroll, or Exchange programs. UA has relationships with multiple universities in Asia (5 universities in Japan, 3 in South Korea, 2 in China, and 1 in Taiwan) as well as a variety of third-party providers. For more information, check out the Education Abroad page of the Capstone International Center.

Submit Your Paper for Research Awards
The Asian Studies program has expanded its annual undergraduate Research Award into two categories. Essays, often written for lower level courses, are generally less than ten pages and may be a book review, response essay, etc., and Research Papers are more substantial, typically more than 10 pages with a significant engagement with multiple sources. A faculty committee will select one awardee in each category who will also receive a small scholarship and a certificate at an event around Honors Week in April.

To submit for the awards, you must email your paper with a cover page (including name, CWID, email address, and a 3-4 sentence summary) to asianstudies@as.ua.edu. The deadline is Monday, January 21 at 11:59 pm. Both Research Awards are open to any University of Alabama undergraduate. For more information, check the Asian Studies website.
