November 2018

Improvement is a common theme that runs through our work, and this month we’ve been celebrating the positive impact focussing on improvement can have on patients and staff.

In Essex care homes, a programme we initiated to address safety issues facing residents has come to fruition. Simple yet effective changes to practice have made a huge difference, particularly in reducing falls. We’re thrilled that this improvement model is being adopted at scale across more than 150 care homes.

Working with three of our partner organisations, we’ve piloted an app enabling staff to share improvement ideas with leadership teams. Over the next year, we’ll be funding these partners to use the app, which we hope will boost both staff morale and high-quality patient care.

We’ve just announced the second cohort of our Aspiring Improvers programme, and have also launched a new initiative – Learning from Excellence. This is an approach to improving patient safety that celebrates excellent care and recognises the staff that deliver it. It has already had great success in Birmingham and we’re looking forward to seeing the impact it can have in our partnership.

BLOG: staff engagement app gives junior doctors at NELFT a voice

Three healthcare organisations in our partnership have successfully piloted ImproveWell, a smartphone app that encourages and enables healthcare staff on the frontline to make improvement suggestions for their workplace. Our latest blog is from Alana Ahmet, a junior doctor and psychiatric trainee at one of our pilot sites: North East London NHS Foundation Trust.

Alana gives us the scoop on the practical and emotional impact of the pilot and gives us her verdict on whether an app really can increase 'Joy In Work' for junior doctors.

Innovation spotlight

A monthly spotlight on innovations addressing some of the most pressing challenges facing our NHS.

This month we're highlighting an innovation that is helping to speed up patient referrals to specialist care providers.

The innovation, Medefer, is an advanced IT platform that has the capability to virtually triage patients (providing electronic advice and guidance) and deliver a consultant-led specialist outpatient service.  Medefer speeds up referrals to specialist care by 95% and delivers a 40% cost saving for the NHS. The product also produces a detailed report, including consultant response times, referral outcomes and provisional diagnosis so GPs can access advice on their patient's pathway much quicker.

Medefer is supported by DigitalHealth.London’s Accelerator programme.
