NATIVE® 5

C41PYL5 / SYL5
MSRP: $179.95
ORIGIN: USA

The venerable Native model has been a mainstay of the Spyderco product line since it was first released in 1997. During more than 20 years of service and five generations of evolution, it has been steadily refined into its current form—the Native 5. Combining all the time-tested qualities of the original design with enhanced ergonomics, incredibly precise lock tolerances, and four-position carry, it is arguably about as perfect as a lock back folding knife can be. So what could possibly make it better? For watersports enthusiasts, those who live in humid climates, or anyone else obsessively concerned with the threat of corrosion, the answer to that question is the new Native 5 Salt.

In simple terms, the Native 5 Salt takes the incredibly popular Native 5 Lightweight platform and renders it entirely with ultra-corrosion-resistant materials. Simple terms, however, don’t do this knife justice.

Starting at the business end, the blade of the Native 5 Salt is precision machined from LC200N—a nitrogen-enriched tool steel that offers extreme corrosion resistance. LC200N is produced by a combination of the PESR (Pressurized Electric Slag Remelting) process and “smart forging” technology to yield a remarkable increase in the steel’s purity and a very fine and homogenous microstructure. It is also a true martensitic steel that can be hardened and tempered through conventional heat treating processes, allowing its hardness level to be precisely controlled to meet the demands of specific uses.

LC200N is widely respected as the material of choice for applications that involve high static and dynamic loads in corrosive environments. It is most famously known as NASA’s preferred material for the ball bearings used in their aerospace equipment, but is also used extensively in the food, chemical, recycling, pharmaceutical, and plastics industries. In knife blades, its extraordinary properties provide an exceptional blend of toughness, edge holding, and corrosion resistance.

To take full advantage of these qualities, the Native 5 Salt’s blade is full-flat-ground for thin, low-friction edge geometry. It is available in a choice of PlainEdge™ or fully-serrated SpyderEdge™ configurations and includes a fully-accessible Trademark Round Hole™ for ambidextrous one-handed opening. An index-finger choil at the heel of the blade allows a “choked up” grip for enhanced control and, like the thumb purchase on the spine, features jimping (textured grooves) for a secure grip.

The knife’s high-visibility yellow handle is injection molded from tough fiberglass-reinforced nylon (FRN) and includes Spyderco’s signature Bi-Directional Texture™ pattern to ensure a secure, non-slip grip—even with wet hands. Four sets of threaded inserts molded directly into the handle scales allow the knife’s hourglass pocket clip to be configured for tip-up or tip-down carry on either side of the body. The clip—like the screws and other handle hardware—is made from a highly corrosion-resistant alloy that is further protected by a black rust-resistant coating. In the tip-up position, it also straddles the handle’s generously sized lanyard hole.

The link between the Native 5 Salt’s blade and handle is its highly evolved back lock mechanism. Precision-machined to exacting tolerances, it balances strength and ease of operation to ensure extreme reliability and a long service life.

A proud addition to Spyderco’s ultra-corrosion-resistant Salt Series of knives, the Native 5 Salt is sure to find favor with current fans of this model and watersports enthusiasts in search of the perfect cutting tool.

TAIWAN MEET

On November 10th, Spyderco’s Eric Glesser and Joyce Laituri were center stage at the second Taiwan “Meet”—an elite gathering of knife enthusiasts with a special affinity for all things Spyderco. Hosted by Spyderco and Ray Gua Knives in Taipei, the Meet attracted nearly 100 visitors from all over Asia, including Taiwan, China, Malaysia, and Macau.

Meet attendees received a privileged “sneak peek” at about 100 prototypes and concept models and got a rare glimpse into the near future of Spyderco’s product line. In the process, they were encouraged to share their thoughts, opinions, likes, and dislikes concerning the designs. As an added bonus, they were treated to detailed insights into the Hundred Pacer™ and Amalgam™ folders from their designers Jonny Liao and Brian Lai, who were also in attendance.

Spyderco is unique in the knife industry in our commitment to sharing our planned designs with astute customers and soliciting their feedback. We are extremely grateful to our hosts in Taipei and to all those who attended for making this Meet a truly unforgettable experience.

SPYDERCO SECONDS SALE

On November 17th, Spyderco proudly hosted its Annual Seconds Sale—an event that has become almost legendary in the knife community. This once-a-year happening allows customers to purchase fully functional, but cosmetically flawed, Spyderco knives at amazingly low prices. In fact, the bargains are so good that people from all over the country make the pilgrimage to Golden, Colorado, to get in on the action. But the Seconds Sale is much more than just great knives at great prices. It is also a very special gathering of kindred spirits and an opportunity for some of Spyderco’s most dedicated and passionate fans to get to know each other.

This year’s sale attracted more than 700 visitors from all corners of the country, including some from as far away as Boston, Massachusetts. The most determined shoppers arrived on Wednesday afternoon—more than two days before the sale opened—to stake their claims as first in line. As the line grew, camping chairs, tents, pop-up campers, and even fire pits turned the waiting game into a true party. The distinguished guest of honor at that party was none other than Ed Schempp—world-renowned custom knifemaker and one of Spyderco’s most popular and prolific designers. Ed traveled to Golden from his native Washington state to join in the fun and show his personal appreciation for the knife fans who braved the cold and snow to participate in the sale. In addition to visiting with customers and talking lots of shop, Ed generously fired up the grill and cooked hot dogs for the crowd. He also raffled off several of his Schempp Bowie™ folders and graciously signed autographs for the many fans and followers of his designs.

The 2018 Spyderco Seconds Sale was an incredible success and a vivid reminder of the passion and dedication of the Spyderco community. We are extremely grateful to all those who participated and to Ed Schempp and all the Spyderco Crew who helped host the event. We can’t wait to do it again next year!

SHOW-ING OFF

November was yet another busy month of trade shows for the Spyderco Crew. Some of them stayed close to home and shared our wares at the Outdoor Retailer Winter Market show in Denver. This was the first time this show was held in November—a strategy designed to allow dealers and manufacturers to better synchronize their efforts with the seasonal buying cycle. Not as frantic as the high-energy Summer Market show, it was a great opportunity for buyers to really connect with brand representatives and examine their newest products in detail.
Spyderco was also well represented at the Diving Equipment and Marketing Association (DEMA) show in Las Vegas. The world’s largest trade-only event for companies specializing in the scuba diving, ocean watersports, and adventure travel industries, it features hundreds of exhibitors and attracts thousands of dive and travel industry professionals from around the world. Once again, our Salt Series™ of ultra-corrosion-resistant cutting tools was a favorite of show attendees and its newest offerings, like the Caribbean™ Salt models, attracted plenty of attention.

Special thanks to all those who visited us at these shows for your continued interest in Spyderco products!

Spyderco is very proud to announce the release of our 2019 Product Guide—one of the most anticipated catalogs in the cutlery industry! We are also excited to implement a new strategy in the way we announce and release our newest products.

Our 2019 Product Guide is now available in digital form for immediate viewing on the catalog page of our web site. It can be viewed online or downloaded as a PDF for convenient offline viewing. On that same web page, you can also request a printed copy and one will be mailed to you as soon as they are available.

As you peruse the pages of our new catalog, you’ll notice that they provide the most up-to-date reference on our current product line and focus on knives and sharpeners that are in active inventory and ready to be purchased, as well as soon-to-be-released products that have been announced in previous product literature. To better balance the timing between the announcement and actual release of our all-new products, we will be rolling out a new product “reveal” process. Look for more details on that process in the catalog and in future announcements from Spyderco.

Thank you for your continued interest in Spyderco products!
