Position Statement on Women's Ordination

On November 18, 2018, the Board of Directors of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada voted the following position statement:

VOTED,
The Board of Directors of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada (SDACC) hereby affirm:
  1. Consistent with the July 11, 1990, decision of the General Conference Session, “… the Scriptures and the writings of Ellen G. White … affirm a significant, wide-ranging, and continuing ministry for women, which is being expressed and will be evidenced in the varied and expanding gifts according to the infilling of the Holy Spirit”;
  2. That General Conference Working Policy A 15 15 permits men and women pastors who are “called and empowered by the Holy Spirit and driven by love for souls”;
  3. In accordance with the 1984 decision of the General Conference’s Annual Council, local churches may “elect and ordain a woman as a local church elder”;
  4. That it is the responsibility of all church organizations to prayerfully find a way to work in unity; and
  5. That every Bible-believing man, woman, and child of the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Canada is part of the priesthood of believers and is commissioned by Jesus to focus on the soul-winning mission of the church.
The national headquarters of the SDACC oversees seven regional districts that serve 72,000 members, 500 congregations, 43 schools, various media ministries, and humanitarian organizations. Their mission is to help people understand the Bible to find freedom, healing, and hope in Jesus.

SURREY SDA CHURCH
Dinner with the Doctor
November 30

The evening of Tuesday, November 6, found approximately 150 guests enjoying a free “Dinner with the Doctor” in the warm atmosphere of the atrium at Church in the Valley (CIV) in Langley BC.  Dinner with the Doctor (DWTD), an instructional program designed in 2012 by SDA physician Dr. Mike Hollie, is a means of helping people implement a whole food, plant-based approach to deal with many chronic diseases that afflict North American society today. DWTD offers sound scientific information presented by a physician, along with a plant-based meal and a demonstration with tips on how to best prepare the food. Pastor Dauncey, Acts of Kindness (AOK) pastor at CIV, led the planning committee while members of both Abbotsford and Church in the Valley worked together to provide this program for the community.

Dr. Tim Riesenberger, an emergency room physician from the Seattle, Washington area was the speaker for the evening and his focus was the “The Blue Zones: How to Live to 100.” Author Dan Buettner in his 2008 New York Times best seller “The Blue Zone: Lessons for Living Longer from the People Who’ve Lived the Longest” reports finding a significant percentage of centenarians still living productive and disease-free lives in four different regions in the world.  Seventh-Day Adventists are included in these blue zones and Dr. Riesenberger discussed the factors that contribute to living not only longer, but healthier lives. Following the presentation many attendees had the opportunity to ask him questions about their specific health and nutrition concerns.

Rebecca Stonecypher planned the menu and prepared the delicious holiday-themed meal consisting of cashew/rice casserole, mashed potatoes and cauliflower with gravy, sweet potatoes, fresh buns from the Sprouted Oven Bakery and a colorful green salad. It’s no small task to prepare for two hundred people (we weren't sure how many would come); but Rebecca has a passion for sharing the benefits of a plant-based diet and she and her helpers cheerfully and skillfully cooked for two full days in preparation for this event. At the end of the evening Rebecca demonstrated how she put together the casserole, the gravy and the decadent chocolate mousse with raspberry dessert.

The program was well-received by those in attendance and CIV is tentatively planning to offer DWTD as a quarterly event. Just as Jesus used physical healing to draw people to an understanding of God’s grace and love for them, we will continue to use our understanding of health principles to lead those who are seeking physical health, to greater spiritual health as well. Special thanks to all the volunteers as well as our company sponsors: The Sprouted One, Nature's Fair Market and Acts of Kindness.

Christ’s Prayer for His Disciples!

Greetings from Abbotsford! It is wonderful to be back home after being away on different trips to attend the GC Annual Council, NAD and SDACC Yearend Meetings. It was a privilege to participate in those meetings and witness the growth of God’s work around our nation, North America, and the world.

Today, I will be of service to our Vancouver Spanish Church as I will share God’s Word with them. Please pray for our global church family and for our leaders -- at the local church and for those who bear heavy responsibilities in different levels of our organization. God is in control!

During this week, I read a “powerful” quotation and I felt moved to share it with you this morning. “It is the will of God that union and brotherly love should exist among His people. The prayer of Christ just before His crucifixion was that His disciples might be one as He is one with the Father, that the world might believe that God had sent Him. This most touching and wonderful prayer reached down the ages, even to our day; for His words were, ‘Neither pray I for these alone, but for them also which shall believe on Me through their word.’” (John 17:20) While we are not to sacrifice one principle of truth, it should be our constant aim to reach this state of unity. This is the evidence of our discipleship.” (EGW, PP, 520)

I pray that each of us will do our part, by God’s grace, to promote and live these wonderful principles of love and unity as we fulfill His Mission, together. This was highlighted in Christ’s message to His disciples, including you and me.

Please find below the link for our stewardship video for this month -- inspiring. We are encouraged by God’s people generosity!

The Power of a Spiritual and Friendly Visit!

Greetings from Oshawa, ON! I have been here since the beginning of the week attending the SDACC Yearend Meetings. This morning, I will be of service to a former congregation that we planted in Hamilton, ON, 11 years ago. We will celebrate their 7th Anniversary of being organized as Church. Then, this evening we will start our SDACC Board of Directors (BOD - Oshawa), which will conclude on Monday. Please pray for our Hamilton Filipino Canadian Church and for the last SDACC BOD in 2018.

A few weeks ago, one of our loving and respected retired pastors visited me in the office. I could immediately sense his spiritual and caring approach and the wisdom he had “acquired” over the years as a faithful servant of God. He has served the Lord in many different capacities, especially in His frontline work. He came to visit me spontaneously and without any agenda, just to show his love and a keen interest in my well-being. At the end of his short visit, he offered a beautiful prayer for me and my family. He humbly asked the Lord, with sincere tears in his eyes, to grant my family and I His daily love, presence, and protection. He also pleaded for God’s wisdom for me and for our team in the office as we humanly lead His work, certainly knowing about the “challenges” faced by leaders. My eyes turned wet and my heart was deeply touched when he finished his prayer -- he was (is) an angel sent by God to inspire and bless me! I did not write about this visit before, although I tried to do that on two or more Sabbath morning occasions… However, I could never finish any sentence because my emotions betrayed me every time I started to write about it. Yes, pastoral visitation works!

Today, I would kindly suggest each and everyone of us to reflect on our ministry for the Lord. We can preach and teach, but if we do not reach out, most of the times, that could become just an empty speech. A one to one spiritual moment with somebody could be just the encouragement needed by that soul and a turning point in their lives. I have never forgotten a pastoral visit that I received from the boys’ dean when he reached out to me at the boarding academy, where I had given my heart to Jesus and began my Christian journey. Lots were at stake as a radical change was happening in my life. One spiritual, caring, and sincere visit with no hidden agenda… what a blessing -- I felt encouraged, stronger, and supported!

In a few weeks, 2018 will be a part of history. I am sure, there is someone that each of us can still reach out for the Lord, by His grace, in a kind, loving, friendly, and maybe even forgiving way -- yes, forgiveness to impart or receive it. Sometimes, all we need to do is just “swallow our pride” and let Christ use us, as His agents of hope and forgiveness, for His honor and glory! (Isa. 52:7)

Please pray for the conclusion of the reaping evangelistic campaign with Pastor Doug Batchelor at the Church in the Valley today.

Happy Sabbath!

In His Service,

Wesley Torres, D.Min.

Christmas Concert
December 8, 2018

WARM HEARTS AT CHRISTMAS

            As days grow colder and drearier, Carolyn Rowse Magill of the Penticton Seventh-day Adventist church and others are working hard to add a little Christmas cheer to the lives of the less fortunate.

2016, showing Pastor Greg Wellman, Captains Tim and Miriam Leslie of the Salvation Army, and Carolyn Rowse Magill.

            For many years now, Carolyn has organized the church’s Christmas concert as a food/fund raiser for the city’s Salvation Army food bank. Relying mainly on the musical abilities of church members and other musicians in the community who donate their time and talent, the concert has been hailed as the best Christmas program in the area. In fact, the annual Carol Fest sponsored by the Inter-Church Committee, usually held in the Pentecostal church, has been cancelled in favor of the Adventist program.

2010 showing Christine Simmons from the Salvation Army and Carolyn Rowse Magill, concert organizer.

            This year the 14th annual “From Our Hearts This Christmas” concert will be held on December 8 at the Adventist church, beginning at 7 pm. Admission is by donation of either non-perishable food items or money. It is advisable to come early, as seats and parking spaces are at a premium.
            After the concert, refreshments served in the church’s fellowship hall give the opportunity to meet with old friends or make new ones.
