2019 Madison Contemporary Vision Dance Summer Intensive:

Dear Dance Community,
As 2018 comes to a close, we at Performing Ourselves are reflecting back on the past year, and grateful for all of the ways we have seen youth empowered and resiliency fostered through dance. Dance improves motor skills, decision-making, creativity, risk taking, cultural understanding, attentiveness, and self-awareness - not to mention builds community and a sense of belonging for our participants all across the city of Madison. In the words of two of these participants: My favorite part of class is working with the other kids to create a dance. I like practicing the dance and getting it right. Putting all the pieces together in your head and then putting it into your body. It’s kinda like math because you have to sometimes solve problems. My favorite part of performing is being with my sisters and my brother on stage. - Adonis, Dancer from East Madison Community Center I like that there's a big group of us and no one judges each other. It feels very opening. Normally, I don't like dancing in front of people because I feel like I'm going to be judged but at dance group I feel like it's a safe space and there's no judging. - Janessa, Dancer from Allied Drive Learning Center
This school year marks our seventh year of programming, and it’s been a remarkable year so far. Through Performing Ourselves, skilled and trained dance instructors and our staff dance/movement therapist bring the gift of dance to hundreds of children all across the city, through both community center classes and school residencies. To date, we have employed 29 undergraduate teachers, offering them professional experience in teaching, mentorship and community development, along with powerful, emotional connections with their students. Almost all of our alumni teachers are either teaching or practicing as dance/movement therapists all over the country.
As a dancer yourself, we know that you fully understand the way dance transforms lives and communities. We could not do the work we do without the generosity of our community, and we hope that during this season of giving, you’ll consider a gift to Performing Ourselves. The University of Wisconsin Foundation, our fiscal agent, is a nonprofit, and 100% of your tax-deductible donations will go directly to supporting Performing Ourselves.
At the heart of our program, we celebrate the power of dance and the way movement shapes lives. We are so thankful for your investment in the arts and these youth, and for partnering with us to spread the gift of dance.
