Invitation to Worship

I’m convinced waiting can be its own kind of torture. When anxiety is high, minutes imitate hours and time constantly threatens to stand still. Once I had to call 911 to help someone I love. When I think back on that call, I remember the careful and measured words of the operator: she said “I am going to wait here with you. It won’t take long—help is on the way!” I can’t tell you whether it was her promise to stay with me, or the assurance that help was inbound that helped to calm my nerves at that moment—I think it must have been the combination of those promises. I didn’t have to worry because I wasn’t alone, and I could trust that things might be okay because, after all, help was on the way. I hope you can join us this Sunday at 5 p.m. as we celebrate the beginning of Advent, as we prepare for the coming of the help we find in Jesus.

Grace and Peace,
Pastor Jasper

November’s One Thing: Whittier ECE-8 School

Each month, we work to focus our justice efforts as a community in one area. This month, we are focusing on Whittier ECE-8 School, which has been serving the children in our neighborhood since 1884. Our coat drive has been an incredible success—we gathered 70 coats (our original goal was 20!) as well as some warm winter clothes for students in our community. Our donation will be delivered early next week, so this Sunday is the last day to bring coats for students in need.

Thank you to our generous community!

DONATION PROGRESS: 70/40 coats

December’s One Thing: Christmas in the Park

For December, we’re gathering donations for Christmas in the Park, organized by AfterHours Denver. Each year, AfterHours and other communities bring a little holiday cheer to the most vulnerable in our midst. On Christmas morning, AfterHours sets up a free market at Lincoln Park, and our neighbors who are experiencing homelessness and/or are living at the lower ends of our economic scale, walk away with a gift.

We have very limited time to gather supplies for 40 hygiene kits to hand out, and we’ll assemble them as part of Wednesday Night at Belong on Wednesday, December 19. We hope to see you then! If you’d like, please bring items on Sunday for our friends in need. (Dollar stores are an excellent resource to get many of these items.)

Wednesday Night at Belong

Wednesdays, 6–9 p.m.

Putting a fresh take on the traditional Wednesday night church meeting, Wednesday Night at Belong is a weekly gathering inspired by the word “liturgy,” which literally means “the work of the people.” If you’re looking for deeper connection, spiritual refreshment, and opportunities for service through action, you’ll be right at home. During the night, we make lunches for our friends without homes, come together and hear from each other, pray together, sing together, and work on service projects in and around the church. The band rehearses for the following Sunday and anyone who is interested in worship arts is encouraged to meet, play, sing, create, and brainstorm more creative ways of serving our church body through the arts.

Snacks and beverages will be provided (potluck is invited!), and while we will not have formal childcare, your kids are more than welcome to join in.
