Work is More Than Just Work

A lot is written about work--how to do it better, how to find the right job, etc. But there is an aspect of work that we don't read much about, which is (for lack of a better term) the spiritual side.

Your job--any job--is an outlet for you to express and improve your character and values. But how many of us see it that way? How many of us take advantage of the unique opportunities that our work gives us to do the deeper work on ourselves? Nearly any job contains some challenges that can serve to help you enrich yourself--as long as you approach them with the right mindset.

I don't want to scare anyone, but the best word I can use to describe what I'm talking about is spiritual. Work is a spiritual endeavor, meaning it allows you to improve yourself in a very specific way (and don't worry, I define "spiritual" in a very practical way).

If nothing else, this week's piece can serve as a reminder: your job can be so much more for you than just something to do for money.

  • A Giant List of Newsletters Worth Checking Out

Josh Spector owns and operates For The Interested—which is a pretty good newsletter in its own right. But he went and complied a list of 25 other newsletters worth checking out. So if you dig newsletters (which I assume you do, because you signed up for this one), you might want to check this out.
  • Have You Heard of the Mere Exposure Effect?

No? Well, it's kind of interesting. Apparently, we tend to prefer things that we are familiar with—even if we've only encountered them briefly. It's been used in marketing for years—from poducts to politics. I have a feeling you'll like this theory, even if you skim the article ;)
