What are you thankful for?

The leaves are wearing their finest fall colors, the rains have returned to Seattle, and one of my favorite topics, gratitude, is on the minds of many as the holidays embrace us. When I consider the past year I remember my parents and quietly recognize them for modeling qualities that taught me to remain open to all that is good, even in challenging times. I give thanks for having the ability and resources to travel as I reflect on the incredible trip I made with James and dear friends to Nepal, cycling through cities that flooded our senses with layers of stimulation, and hiking, paddling, and peddling within landscapes that held wildlife and vistas beyond compare. The Nepalese have no word for "thank you". Helping someone is a cultural norm and words of gratitude are not expected. They are a people that define ingenuity, generosity and gracious living. On our trip, I most enjoyed harmonizing with other Artists - musicians, weavers, painters - and learning how they each used their talents to both give and receive. This is what I am thankful for, the exchange of joy and love that is made possible by sharing my work with you.
Happy Holidays!

"House Crows" as remembered from Pokhara, Nepal
Oil on Paper, 17" x 17"

Just like our crows in Seattle, the Nepalese House Crows were a treat to watch. They were most noticeable in the urban areas of Kathmandu and Pohkara where they would hang out with us as we ate our meals, hoping for left overs. I think they learned quickly that left overs just don't happen with hungry cyclists!

Sketches of the "Spotted Deer" from Chitwan National Park, Nepal

Whether running in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, or cycling through the Terai of Nepal, observing the natural world inspires my practice. The Chitwan National Park is home to four types of deer, all of which we were fortunate enough to see, along with elephants, rhino, peacocks, gharials, and scores of incredible birds. Of the deer, the Spotted Deer were by far my favorite with their beautiful linear spotted patterns strewn over deep amber coats. These sketches are the early stages of prints and paintings that are in progress, so stay tuned!

James took the image here as this Tibetan weaver and jewelry artist shared her incredible story of fleeing Tibet for sanctuary in Nepal. We were on the street in Pokhara where she uses her creativity, courage and determination to make her way as an Artist. Her daily life is filled with challenges that have not closed her heart or mind. She insisted on giving me a handmade bracelet, which I treasure, but her words and how she modeled gratitude, resilience and passion are unforgettable.
Thank you for continuing to help me to live as an Artist - for your commissions and purchases and for receiving what I have to share.

Mention this newsletter with any purchase from my studio between now and January 1 and you will also receive a 20% discount on artwork, jewelry or instruction.
