Sketches of the "Spotted Deer" from Chitwan National Park, Nepal
Whether running in the forests of the Pacific Northwest, or cycling through the Terai of Nepal, observing the natural world inspires my practice. The Chitwan National Park is home to four types of deer, all of which we were fortunate enough to see, along with elephants, rhino, peacocks, gharials, and scores of incredible birds. Of the deer, the Spotted Deer were by far my favorite with their beautiful linear spotted patterns strewn over deep amber coats. These sketches are the early stages of prints and paintings that are in progress, so stay tuned!

James took the image here as this Tibetan weaver and jewelry artist shared her incredible story of fleeing Tibet for sanctuary in Nepal. We were on the street in Pokhara where she uses her creativity, courage and determination to make her way as an Artist. Her daily life is filled with challenges that have not closed her heart or mind. She insisted on giving me a handmade bracelet, which I treasure, but her words and how she modeled gratitude, resilience and passion are unforgettable.
