Yet another AD move as Lamar's Henderson steps away from the Cardinals after five years of leadership. Longtime university stalwart Bellard takes over in an interim capacity as a full national search for a permanent AD launches. Bellard says he'll push forward on facility improvements, "These upgrades will not be possible without the help and support of our generous Cardinal fans, Lamar alumni, and athletic boosters. With the help of our coaches and administration, I look forward to sharing my vision with our community, alumni, and friends." (link)
Auburn: Prez Leath says the search for a new AD on The Plains is truly wide open, though he would "be delighted if someone with an Auburn past rose to the top of this." No timeline set, but, "They've got to be a proven leader of some type; they're going to have been a senior administrator of some type of complex organization, preferably sports. Now, intercollegiate athletics would give an advantage. It's not inconceivable someone for other sports background at a high level could be a viable candidate." More from Leath in the piece. Parker Executive Search will assist, as will a six-member internal committee that includes former Women's Golf HC Evans, former Men's Golf student-athlete & PGA headliner Dufner, former Women's Gymnastics student-athlete Lee, BoT members Riggins & Lanier, plus finance professor Marshall. (link); Utah State AD Hartwell tells the Dothan Eagle he "absolutely" has interest in the Auburn opportunity. (link); With the AD search ongoing, who will negotiate a new contact for Tigers FB HC Malzahn, if needed? Leath indicates the job would be squarely on the plate of outgoing boss Jacobs. Leath: "If there's big decisions to be made in athletics over the next couple of months while we're searching (for a new athletic director), Jay will do like he normally does and come and sit with me and we'll work through them together." (link)
North Dakota's AD search committee indicates it won't start to narrow the candidate pool until after the December 3rd deadline for applications. While there's no set start date target for the new boss, UND brass plan to host three finalists on campus in early- to mid-January. (link); Also in Grand Forks, UND inked a new seven-year pact with Adidas, the first department-wide apparel deal. $1.345M in product over the span of the agreement looks to be focused on jerseys & shoes. (link)
UMBC AD Hall puts his signature to an extension that could keep him atop the Retrievers' portfolio through the 2021-22 academic year. University VP for Student Affairs Young: "Under his leadership, our program has become even more competitive while also maintaining focus on athlete's academic success and promoting campus wide recreation and wellness programs. The future of Retriever athletics has never been brighter, so this was an important time for continuity and strong, stable leadership. I'm proud of all that Tim and his staff have accomplished." Prez Hrabowski echoes Young's sentiments. Hall says it's an "exciting time for Retriever Nation [...] We can't wait to see how the next chapter in our athletic program's history unfolds." No compensation details mentioned. (link)
Pac-12 Hotline's Wilner dives into the situation at UCLA where Bruins AD Guerrero is leading a process to hire a new FB HC. One angle from Wilner, "Guerrero is widely viewed within the conference as close to retirement: His contract runs through 2018-19, and that will likely be it. He’s at the gates, with one last chance to get football right and complete his legacy. Standing behind him in that quest are two powerful forces, the gleaming Wasserman complex and the Under Armour brand. The apparel giant didn’t commit $280 million to a school in the nation’s second-largest market to tolerate a second-rate football program. The UA cash will allow the Bruins to eat Mora’s buyout without having to return to the donors, who are already taxed by the facility projects, and ask them for another dime." Further, Wilner thinks if the new hire works out well, Senior Assoc. AD for External Relations Rebholz, who is part of the search committee, will be positioning himself to replace Guerrero, though "the candidate pool for that job will be deep and impressive." More, including the role of notable donor Wasserman "emerging as UCLA’s version of Phil Knight, a benefactor deeply passionate about football success … and willing to do what is necessary to make the vision a reality." (link)
A new strategic plan at Presbyterian includes, "Growing strategically, by enhancing academic offerings, expanding co-curricular opportunities and club sports, and adding new athletic programs while maintaining current programs at the Division I level. Football will transition to the Pioneer Football League beginning with the 2021 season." So, it looks like the Big South will lose another FB-playing member in the near future, though the Blue Hose commit to sticking with DI competition. (link)
Arkansas State gets the go ahead for a $29M north end zone expansion project at Centennial Bank Stadium and per AD Mohajir, construction could start as early as next week. The project includes a 66K square-foot athletics facility, with weight and training rooms, academic space and team theater-seating room, as well as 150 new loge boxes and 68 new premium seats. Mohajir: "It helps us from a lot of different areas. No. 1, it helps us generate revenue. It helps us retain and keep coaches. It helps us show students and recruits, and just regular students that want to come here that, you know what, we're an emerging university, and we think big. Not only do we think big, but we put into action what we believe we can do." The Red Wolves Foundation will foot the bill. (link)
Eastern Washington boss Chaves says being left out of the FCS Playoffs was one of the most challenging days of his professional career. "I feel like I have a pretty good pulse on these sorts of things, but I’m still blown away and shocked. […] I will continue to be asking a lot of questions." EWU's four losses came to FBS Texas Tech & a trio of high-flying FCS opponents who combined for a 28-5 mark this season. (link); Austin Peay FB HC Healy continues to provide context on the Govs schedule of three FBS foes, which apparently didn't mix for the selection committee, "There are some schools that have enough money in their budget, or some of the private universities that don’t need that funding, that they don’t have go to play [FBS teams]. And I wouldn’t play ‘em if I didn’t have to go play ‘em either. But we need to for our athletic department, as do a lot of the schools in our conference, so we’ve gotta do it." (link)
The Athletic's Fortuna pens, "no one is immune to a pink slip." Included in the article is the list of 22 'Power 5' HCs (full-time and interim) who have never been fired - a group which, until last week, included former Tennessee HC Jones. Also part of the 22: Bielema (Arkansas), Graham (Arizona State), Kingsbury (Texas Tech), Luke (Ole Miss) and Odom (Missouri). Long read with insights from a handful of HCs on what it's like to teeter on the edge. How about this one from Purdue HC Brohm on his time at Illinois as OC, "We started 6-0, and the athletic director came on the trip with us to a game, and like you could tell that Coach Zook and the AD would not even speak or even look at each other. So I knew: OK, this is not good. It’s a new athletic director. I knew that, OK, we better keep winning or we’re gonna be in trouble, and sure enough we lost all six (remaining) games. It was like, OK, we’re done." Lots more. (link)
SBJ: Media expert Ourand expects FOX to show fewer college FB games in primetime in coming years as it focuses on "owning" time slots, like the Noon window that included Michigan-Wisconsin last weekend. (link); Ourand continues on when we might see a major digital player scoop up a major rights deal in an exclusive arrangement. NFL SVP of Digital Media Business Development Shah says the production of sports is no small mountain for digital companies to figure out. Amazon Head of Sports DeLorenzo says his team is taking a wait & see attitude on the future, but notes production as a variable. (link); No word yet on if the Centerplate brand will be annexed as part of the sale to Sodexo. Consultant Bigelow: "Centerplate has to be happy that it was bought by another food company instead of [another] venture capitalist. It bodes well for long-term business rather than the typical private equity group that always cuts costs to make it attractive to sell." Centerplate CEO Verros: "Our bandwidth is now huge … with greater buying power. It’s no secret the marketplace is very competitive, and with the power of Sodexo as a growth engine, we have the ability to be more aggressive." (link)

Yahoo's Eisenberg profiles the Toccoa Falls MBB program, which lost by 101 points to Appalachian State earlier this month in what was only the sixth game decided by 100+ points in Division I MBB history. The Screaming Eagles receive approximately $5K per game for each of its seven DI match-ups this season, but Eisenberg calls it "borderline malpractice" for the young team to have to endure such a schedule, which was established before current MBB HC/AD/Interim WBB HC Hall took over. Can you name what state Toccoa Falls College is in? Three guesses max. (link)

Maybe the AD hiring timeline at Northern Arizona will slow down a bit as Prez Cheng decides to keep FB HC Souers atop the program after a decision earlier in the season that he would step away. Cheng recently said she wanted the new AD to have a say in the new HC, but now, "Maintaining stability in the athletics department is extremely important as NAU begins its search for a new athletics director. It will be a key consideration for those interested in NAU’s athletics director position to know they are walking into a strong and stable program and will have the time and ability to make coaching decisions." NAU hosts San Diego in an opening round FCS Playoffs match-up on Saturday. (link)
Detroit MBB HC Alexander has been suspended for multiple games in what the school has said is a "personnel matter." Alexander's absence was initially to be for one game, but now the Titans' HC has missed three thus far and the school isn't commenting on his return date. The Titans went 8-23 in Alexander's initial campaign last season. (link)
More from UMBC as Retrievers AD Hall, MBB HC Odom & WBB boss Stern discussed the intricacies of AD-HC relationships. A key focal point for Hall every day, "As the AD, I have to ask my coaches, 'How can I help remove roadblocks for you to be successful?'" Odom notes the importance of realistic expectations, "You have to have an understanding that there are certain things that can be done and certain things that can’t." Stern: "Because my AD and I were brutally honest with each other from day one, our relationship has become that much stronger through everything we’ve faced together." (link)
More Personnel: South Alabama FB HC Jones will step down after the Jags finale at New Mexico State on Dec. 2. (link); Robert Morris FB HC Banaszak resigned yesterday after a 9-35, four year run with the Colonials. (link); Montana and FB HC Stitt part ways. (link); Louisville Interim AD Tyra moves quickly, hires Canisius Women's LAX HC Teeter to the same role for the Cards. (link); Louisiana-Lafayette tabs former Auburn Assoc. HC Glasco as the new Ragin' Cajuns Softball HC. (link); Citadel AD Senter is looking for a new Volleyball HC with the exit of former HC Mosqueda. (link); Former Louisville MBB HC Pitino on his future: "If a school, come April, comes to me in Miami and says, 'We believe you. We believe you were innocent,' I would give it a shot. I don't care about the money, the salary. But the way I'm looking at it now is that I've got to get on with a different part of my life -- build a different life that doesn't include coaching. I need to be happy, be content." (link); Auburn MBB Video Coordinator Sullivan still doesn't have an explanation from the school on why he has been suspended from the program. (link); Cal State Northridge Assoc. AD of Strategic Communications Millstone exited for the Director of Communications spot with the NBA's Clippers. (link)
The New York Times explores how the New York Yankees are “crowdsourcing the vetting process” in their search for a new manager by making the candidates available to the news media during the interviewing process. GM Cashman says the two main purposes of the public vetting process are to have reporters possibly find information on a candidate that the organization did not and to observe how the candidates handle the media. Chicago Cubs Prez Epstein is credited with the idea, as he held news conferences for each of the four candidates looking to become the next Boston Red Sox manager shortly into his GM stint in Boston. Epstein: "We were new at the jobs ourselves, so we were thinking of alternatives to the traditional interviews, and that was one of them. We tried to rethink the interview process because we realized we ran the risk of hiring the candidate that interviewed the best as opposed to the candidate who was best suited to handle the manager’s job." Who will be the first to employ this strategy during the FB HC carousel? Ha. (link)
More TV/OTT: The reported upcoming layoffs at ESPN are expected to shave $80M in costs. Notable author & ESPN expert Miller says there's likely to be more in the future. (link); Broadcasting & Cable reviews a study that found a number of reasons for dissatisfaction among streaming customers. At the top of the list is buffering issues. Other nicks include a delayed feed & poor picture quality. Important to consider as many think we're headed to a completely cable-less world. (link); T-Mobile's six-second native ads during the World Series were a major success for FOX & the ad unit will be introduced to more sports programming, including the Big Ten Championship Game. (link); DISH & CBS are at odds as the satellite player has dropped the broadcaster in a number of markets including Atlanta, Tampa, Dallas & NYC, which will impact viewership of the Iron Bowl this Saturday. Better get the rabbit ears out. (link)
Hellman: Extraordinary Lockers
An excerpt from former New Mexico AD Krebs' deposition with the attorney for NMFishBowl's Libit makes for some interesting reading. Krebs was pressed as a function of Libit's public records lawsuit against the university's foundation & parts of the deposition focus on why the former Lobos boss deleted some emails from his account. Lots here as the university also says it still has the emails removed by Krebs' attorney before submission for public consumption. (link, link)
Coastal Carolina FB may have a losing record this season, but Chants AD Hogue is happy with the way the program is progressing in its first year of FBS and Sun Belt play. Hogue: "I think moving to FBS and getting the full Sun Belt schedule has presented the challenges we expected we would see. It's certainly, from a competitive stand point, a tremendous league. We knew that, we knew there'd be some growing pains, we knew it'd be a process." Despite the challenges, Hogue reports an increase in season ticket sales and community support: "We've seen our season ticket base increase, we've seen our sponsors provide incredible support to what we're doing, we've had some innovative promotions that have worked. ... The tailgates and the games: we try to go and create some sort of student spirit. But especially to move up and play better teams and kind of grow into our conference, I think that'll make it kind of easier to do." (link)
The U.S. Department of Education confirmed that the Office of Civil Rights is investigating Missouri State for possible Title IX violations. The probe is believed to be tied to the school’s decision in April to cut Field Hockey. MSU General Counsel Dockery is confident the investigation will show no wrongdoing by the university: "We've tried to be very transparent with our decision. We've stood behind the decision that we made. We believe the investigation will bare that out." (link)
The Naked Truth's Cyphers and Thompson dig in on 22ft Academy, the $26K/year "bootleg prep school" started by Euro-league basketball agent Rawson in 2013 that lures NBA hopefuls to the states with the promise of better preparing them for their future careers. Rawson was arrested on Nov. 1 on charges of visa fraud in connection with the academy. Much more here on 22ft and the history of similar prep schools and the deportation of one of Rawson's students, seven-foot Greek standout Tunc. Long read. (link)
NYT's Schonbrun is the latest to profile Fanatics & its growing global appetite as company Chairman Rubin notes the importance of leveraging key micro-moments that happen every week around the sports landscape. Fanatics expects to move 10M units between Thanksgiving & Christmas, raking in $2B in the process. Rate: 40K packages an hour. Rubin, confident, "Amazon is an incredible company, but we have 5,000 full-time employees that go to bed and wake up thinking about the licensed sports business." Fifty percent of orders come from a mobile device, Rubin thinks the day is coming where a fan will enter a brick & mortar shop at an arena/stadium, order from their phone & have the swag delivered to their seat. NPD Group's Powell is a contrarian, "While I have a lot of admiration for what Fanatics has done, what they’re doing is replicable." More. (link)
Also Noticed: Parker Executive Search will assist with the AD search at Washington State; Interim Louisville Prez Postel says he wants to be the permanent leader in the Derby City, continues to stick by the athletic leadership moves made under his watch. (linklink); Former ISP/IMG boss Sutton's Teall Investments takes majority stake in Sunshine Beverages, a Winston-Salem based beverage company that offers a "better-for-you" energy drink. (link); Cool video of Baylor Baseball's new Jack Ward Pitching Lab. (link); Illinois and Missouri agree to a home-and home FB series alternating between Champaign (2026, 2028) and Columbia (2027, 2029) for the four-year deal. (link); Sooner than that, Mizzou will host Louisiana-Lafayette in 2020 on the gridiron. (link); Iowa FB adds a home date with Colorado State to its 2021 schedule. (link); From Law360: "A member of Bryant College's lacrosse team filed a medical malpractice suit in Rhode Island federal court on Friday against a surgeon and his orthopedic group, claiming she suffered complications after the doctor operated on her knee." (link); The Justice Department sued yesterday to block AT&T's $85B merger with Time Warner, calling it an "illegal" combo that stifles innovation and harms consumers. AT&T General Counsel McAtee: "Today's DOJ lawsuit is a radical and inexplicable departure from decades of antitrust precedent." (link)

Raycom Media Camellia Bowl Executive Director Johnny Williams discusses the primetime slot his game has this year on the first day of bowl play, the community-wide effort in Montgomery & the uniqueness of Cramton Bowl. Williams, who has plenty of department-side experience on his resume as the former AD at Troy & as a senior-leader at Alabama, notes the history of the city & the value it brings for student-athletes who engage in pre-game activities.
