NEWS & EVENTS FROM READING'S OWN PUBLISHER | NOVEMBER 2017
COUNT DOWN TO THE FESTIVITIES

We hope you'll be inspired to include some of our new books on your Christmas shopping lists this year. We have such a great job - constantly being presented with new ideas, fresh creativity and great stories from Reading and its people. Here are some and there will be more...

Did you know that Arthur Hill (of memorial baths fame) was the step-brother of Octavia Hill (of National Trust fame)? Ok, you did. But did you know that their sister, Miranda, founded the Society for the Diffusion of Beauty? Or that their mother, Caroline, was a pioneering educationalist? Or that their grandfather, Thomas, was first to understand the link between poor living conditions (particularly sanitation) and poor health?

In Reading, we are justifiably proud of our connection to this family through Arthur,  Mayor of Reading from 1883-1887. Now, in this entertaining and informative book, you can find out more about his work, his influences and the effect he and his family had on our lives today.

With endorsements from Dame Fiona Reynolds (former Director General of the National Trust), Dan Raven-Ellison (founder of the Greater London National Park City) and Dr Victoria Edwards (CEO of the Ernest Cook Trust), this book is sure to get noticed.

BOOK REVIEW

'Enthralling, dynamic, and utterly captivating'

... according to a review by Aoife Lyall in The Interpreter's House, issue 66. 'Octopus Medicine is not a traditional poetry collection: it is three verse-stories about the octopus, interpolated by illustrations, facts, figures and instructions to the reader. It is doing something new. And it is doing it remarkably well.'

The same issue contains a poem from Gill Learner and has a great review of Half the Human Race by Susan Utting. Here are some of the things it says:

'Read this collection for its imagery and its voices: defiant, determined, intimate, and fierce with life.'

'Susan Utting touches on what it is to be all the women a woman is expected to be.'

'Utting moves easily between diverse themes and ideas, joining them with confident and beautiful imagery.'
MEET ONE OF OUR PARTNERS

You may already know that the PBS (set up by TS Eliot and friends in 1953 to 'propagate the art of poetry') was taken over by Inpress (who represent our books to the trade) last year and a great job they're making of it. We used to have to send 6 hard copies of all our manuscripts to them to consider for a PBS 'recommendation' which would cost us around £90. Now we can send manuscripts as PDFs via email. It has saved us a fortune!

They have recently brought out a 'new look' Winter Bulletin which features a short review of Steven's On Magnetism, more exclusive poems, full colour images and unique commentary from major worldwide poets. The Winter Bulletin will be launched from 7pm on the 8th December at the Poetry Society Café in London. Tickets are £5-7 and available from here.

And in case you are interested in being a member the PBS are offering Two Rivers Press newsletter subscribers - that's you! - a special 10% discount rate across all their membership options. Simply enter the code TWORIVERS at the checkout here. Christmas gift membership options are also available for the poetry lover in your life!
