The Scot Knot - November 2017
Dr. Tom Bogart

As educators, we take seriously the goal of partnering with families to provide the best environment for students to grow and develop. The opportunity to look at the process from the viewpoint of a parent has given me a renewed commitment to this idea of partnership. A student's time here at Maryville College is just the latest step in a journey that began at birth and will continue after the student graduates. I have spent my career enjoying the chance to see students challenge themselves as they discover their potential and begin to achieve it. This can be difficult both for them and for their family, as sometimes they find their vocation to be different than originally anticipated.

Our daughter is now a junior in college and is seriously considering what comes after graduation. Her discipline is one in which she has the option of going directly into the workforce or directly into graduate school, and she is applying for internship opportunities for next summer both for their own sake and in the hope of discerning the best way forward. At Maryville College, we ask every student to complete a significant practical experience so that they are both well prepared for the next step and confident that the next step is the right one for them. I am grateful for the many people helping her, and I am proud to be part of a caring community that helps the students here.

Thank you for sharing your student with Maryville College. I look forward to congratulating you at Commencement and through the years ahead, and encourage you to continue to work together with us in partnership. May this be a blessed holiday season for you.

Business Office: 1098-T Tuition Statement

Maryville College has partnered with Heartland ECSI, offering students the opportunity to receive their 1098-T Tuition Statement electronically this year. If you and your student would like to receive the 1098-T form electronically, please have your student give his or her consent by following the link provided below and following the step-by-step instructions. 1098-Ts will be provided by the end of January 2018. If electronic consent is not received by Jan. 1, 2018, the 1098-T will be mailed to the current address on file. Please have your student check Self-Service to ensure your mailing address is correct. Corrections must be made before Dec. 31, 2017. Please note, 1098-Ts cannot be forwarded.

1098-T Electronic Consent
The benefits to receiving electronic notification are:
  • Provides access to the form 1098-T earlier than the traditional mailing process.
  • Online access eliminates the chance that the 1098-T will get lost, misdirected or delayed during delivery, or misplaced once the student receives it.
  • Signing up for online access is easy and secure.
  • Students can access their 1098-T form while traveling or away from their home address.

It's that easy!

If you have any questions, please visit the ECSI website for information regarding your tax documents and to obtain contact information for Heartland ECSI.

Direct your student to the Maryville College Career Center website to explore career advising appointments, resume and cover letter assistance, job and internship search strategies and a database of internship opportunities.

Academics: Inclement Weather/School Closing Procedures

Students playing in the snowIn the event that classes are cancelled or delayed due to adverse weather conditions, students are advised to check the Maryville College website for detailed information. MC is equipped with an emergency communications system that emails, texts and calls students, faculty and staff in case of a campus emergency or closure. Additionally, area radio and TV stations will be notified by 7 a.m. on the day in question. Because we are a residential campus, essential staff will still report to work, so certain services, including dining services, will not close or cease operations. As for rehearsals, performances, practices, games, etc., students should check with faculty and staff in charge of those areas. More information can be found on the MC website.

Advancement: Year-End Giving

Maryville Fund graphicYou have the power to make a positive impact on the life of a student at MC. Ninety seven percent of MC students receive financial assistance, and almost two-thirds of our students are the first in their family to attend college. This means that when you make a gift to the Maryville Fund, you make receiving a college degree a reality for a student who might otherwise not be able to attend college at all. For this holiday season, give the gift of an education. Make a safe, secure online donation before Dec. 31 and see it make a difference in the lives of our students come spring.
