Volume 2 of North Atlantic Seaway, the highly regarded history of
Atlantic passenger travel says this about the Atlantic:
"Her captain decided to make for Halifax, but she went on the rocks outside that port in appalling weather conditions."
Appalling weather conditions? The author should have read the official inquiry into the loss of the Atlantic. It says, "Capt Williams states that at midnight when he left the deck, and again when he came on deck after the ship struck, the night was fine, stars being visible... the land might have been seen at 2 or 3 miles distance." The 4th Officer testified "At 15 minutes to three ... it was cloudy, but here and there a peeping star, and not thick..."
The legend continues. In Spindrift, copyright 2017, the authors state: "The White Star Line's emigrant ship SS Atlantic foundered on the rocks of Nova Scotia during a storm on 1 April, 1873."
There was no storm.
The Atlantic was lost because of incompetent management of the ship,
not bad weather.

Strategic Planning and
150th Anniversary
We are beginning to develop a strategic plan with assistance from NS Department of Communities, Culture, and Heritage and Catherine Pheonix, a professional in organizational management and leadership. It is time to plan our future as a museum, interpretation centre, and heritage park and the current board has committed to developing this plan in line with the history of the society and our future vision.
2023, five years from this coming year, is the 150th anniversary of the wreck of the SS Atlantic. We are moving toward this date with an intention of redeveloping the interpretation centre and museum displays. This journey has only just made a few first steps but we are excited about unfolding and developing new ideas for the SS Atlantic Heritage Park.
