Don’t Miss Next Sunday’s Big Event

Christmas LightsMake sure you attend the annual Village Christmas lighting event next Sunday, November 26 at 6:00 pm in Deitsch Park (corner of Garrison Village Drive and Brock Street).
Our team of 30 volunteers has been busy over the past couple of weeks stringing lights and garlands and harnessing reindeer to their sleigh.
This is a rain (or snow) event, which will get you home before the Grey Cup kickoff at 6:30.
We are not serving hot cider this year, so feel free to bring your own warming beverage.
Stay tuned for an announcement about another lighting event closer to Christmas.

Help!

We still need to fill one position on the VCA executive.  We need a Recording Secretary.  (And then you will get real minutes of the VCA meetings!)  We meet once a month and would very much appreciate an additional set of hands to help out.  Please contact Mark if you can assist.

Christmas “Tip” for Garbage and Recycle Collectors

Garbage CollectorFor a number of years now, many Village residents who back onto laneways have shown their appreciation to our garbage and recycle collectors for the excellent work they do for us throughout the year by contributing to a Christmas tip fund.  We are very fortunate to have this service that comes into our laneways as many developments such as ours have to take their garbage and recycle bins to the street for pick up.

In the past this project was handled by the VCA, but as The Village has grown it was determined that it made more sense to manage this on a laneway by laneway basis.  One volunteer from each laneway emails or delivers a letter to residents in their laneway inviting them to be involved and offering to act as a drop off point for those interested in participating.  Of course, residents are under no obligation to participate and some may choose to handle this on their own or not at all.   As a guideline we have suggested a $20 donation per participating household.  This amount is then divided between each of the collectors.

Residents of Col. Cohoe, Elizabeth and Samuel Streets have laneway associations in place that handle this.  In the Brookfield area of The Village there are volunteer collectors for the Garrison Village Dr./Blackbird/Brock laneway; the Garrison Village Dr./Jordan/Norton laneway; and the Blackbird/Norton/Brock laneway.

If you live in one of the newer laneways that does not currently have a volunteer collector and you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jane Chapell at jane.chapell@gmail.com or Carol Fraser at carol.fraserg@gmail.com for more information.

Last year the Brookfield laneway volunteers coordinated their efforts by combining the funds collected and presenting them to the garbage collectors at one time.   The target date for the Brookfield laneways this year is Monday, December 18th.  The drivers and collectors who have received these gifts in the past have been most appreciative.

We will follow up with a reminder and more details later but, in the meantime, Jane or Carol would appreciate hearing from anyone in the newer laneways who would be interested in volunteering to canvass their neighbours for this project.

The Last Word with John Hawley

Dear Neighbours,

Here's a summary of some of the points I discussed at the recent VCA meeting in October.

Construction1) Our Village Architectural Codes are what set The Village apart from other developments. They are registered on title to everyone's property and we are all obligated to comply with them. Recently a number of residents have asked about whether they could have glazing in their front door. This is not generally allowed, but there have been two exceptions granted based on architectural merit. Our Village Architect recently reviewed this aspect of our Codes and have pre approved a couple of door styles with limited glazing in the upper portion, in keeping with our architecture, that will be permitted on a case by case basis. If you are interested considering this for your front door or are just curious in seeing what these doors look like,  please email me at  john.hawley12@gmail.com  and we'll send you details.

2) We've started the servicing of the newest residential phase of The Village at the corner of Niven and Perez Street. There will be 7 detached houses, 2 semi detached, 4 bungalow townhouses, and 10 two storey townhouses, for a total of 23 new homes. The designs & pricing will be available at an open house for residents late November at 24 Rampart Street, our newest Presentation Centre.

3) We are currently working with the Town on the plans and approvals for the build out of The Village Centre. This process will take about 8-12 months.  We hope to start construction in 2019. We are asking for a zoning amendment to allow for a boutique hotel and a boutique grocer. Plans also include new restaurants, a cafe, a chapel/concert hall, and new retail shops. There will be several public information meetings where the designs and details will be presented.

4) Construction on the low rise apartment site (across from CIBC) is now scheduled for late 2018 early 2019.
