Christmas “Tip” for Garbage and Recycle Collectors
For a number of years now, many Village residents who back onto laneways have shown their appreciation to our garbage and recycle collectors for the excellent work they do for us throughout the year by contributing to a Christmas tip fund. We are very fortunate to have this service that comes into our laneways as many developments such as ours have to take their garbage and recycle bins to the street for pick up.
In the past this project was handled by the VCA, but as The Village has grown it was determined that it made more sense to manage this on a laneway by laneway basis. One volunteer from each laneway emails or delivers a letter to residents in their laneway inviting them to be involved and offering to act as a drop off point for those interested in participating. Of course, residents are under no obligation to participate and some may choose to handle this on their own or not at all. As a guideline we have suggested a $20 donation per participating household. This amount is then divided between each of the collectors.
Residents of Col. Cohoe, Elizabeth and Samuel Streets have laneway associations in place that handle this. In the Brookfield area of The Village there are volunteer collectors for the Garrison Village Dr./Blackbird/Brock laneway; the Garrison Village Dr./Jordan/Norton laneway; and the Blackbird/Norton/Brock laneway.
If you live in one of the newer laneways that does not currently have a volunteer collector and you are interested in volunteering, please contact Jane Chapell at jane.chapell@gmail.com or Carol Fraser at carol.fraserg@gmail.com for more information.
Last year the Brookfield laneway volunteers coordinated their efforts by combining the funds collected and presenting them to the garbage collectors at one time. The target date for the Brookfield laneways this year is Monday, December 18th. The drivers and collectors who have received these gifts in the past have been most appreciative.
We will follow up with a reminder and more details later but, in the meantime, Jane or Carol would appreciate hearing from anyone in the newer laneways who would be interested in volunteering to canvass their neighbours for this project.
