CTSI Population Health Postdoc
Receives Award for Obesity Research

Congratulations to Ying Meng, Ph.D., R.N., Population Health postdoctoral fellow at the UR CTSI and research associate in the School of Nursing, on taking home the top award for a poster competition at the Obesity Society’s Annual Scientific Meeting in early November. Meng’s award-winning poster focused on how genes and diet work together to influence weight gain during pregnancy. Gaining too much weight during pregnancy can lead to poor health later on for moms and babies.

CTSI Research Network Survey

The CTSI is conducting a brief survey of all URMC faculty members focused on involvement in research and research collaborations. The survey was created by the CTSI in 2011, and this will be the fourth data collection. The CTSI is using these data to conduct a social network analysis of URMC research networks and to compare how these research networks grow and change over time. For more information on the survey methodology and how the data is used, please read this recent post in the CTSI Stories Blog. Your participation is very important and greatly appreciated!

Please take a few minutes to complete the survey using this link.

America's Got Regulatory Science Talent
Student Competition

The 5th annual America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent Student Competition provides an opportunity for students from across the University of Rochester to compete for a chance to present their regulatory science ideas at the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Teams of students develop and present a proposed solution to a current area of need related to regulatory science, the science of developing new tools, standards, and approaches to assess the safety, efficacy, quality, and performance of FDA-regulated products.

Complete information, entry form, and instructions on how to apply are on the America’s Got Regulatory Science Talent webpage.

Submit entry forms to Scott Steele, Ph.D., by Wednesday, January 31, 2018.

Toward the Era of Large 𝒑𝟐, Medium 𝒏

Presented by: Xing Qiu, Ph.D., Associate Professor, Department of Biostatistics & Computational Biology

In the past two decades, the emergence of many different types of high-throughput data, such as whole transcriptome gene expression, genotyping, and microbiota abundance data, has revolutionized medical research. One common property shared by these "Omics" data is that typically they have many more features than the number of independent measurements (sample size). This property is also known as the "large p, small n" property in the research community, and has motivated many instrumental statistical innovations.

Recent methodology and collaborative research that involves "large 𝑝2" models, and potential extensions of these methods that may be used in other areas of statistics will be discussed.

Date: Thursday, November 30th
Time: 3:30 – 5:00 pm
Location: Helen Wood Hall Auditorium 1W-304

Research Certification Exam
Review Prep Group

Are you preparing to take a clinical research certification exam through ACRP or SoCRA? A study group, largely self-directed, is forming to meet weekly, beginning Wednesday, January 10th. Sessions will run through mid-February. Teleconferencing will be available.

Review materials consisting largely of slide set presentations and reading assignments will be provided. The initial session will be informational. Remaining sessions will begin with a facilitated review and continue with independent group study (note that group study participation may be limited and/or unavailable for those participating via teleconference). If interested, please email Kelly Unsworth for additional information or questions.

Date: Weekly – Beginning Wednesday, January 10th
Time: 4:00 – 6:00 pm

OHSP Seminar Cancelled

Please Note: The OHSP Seminar scheduled for Wednesday, November 29th has been cancelled. The next seminar will be held on Wednesday,

Michael G. Kurilla Joins NCATS as
Clinical Innovation Director

Michael Gregory Kurilla, M.D., Ph.D., will direct the National Center for the Advancement of Translational Science Division of Clinical Innovation beginning Dec. 10, 2017. Kurilla’s new role will include leading the Clinical and Translational Science Awards (CTSA) Program, which supports innovative solutions that advance the efficiency, quality, and impact of translational science with the ultimate goal of getting new treatments to patients more quickly. As the largest NIH initiative, the CTSA Program supports a national network of medical research institutions, like the University of Rochester CTSI, that work together to tackle system-wide scientific and operational problems in clinical and translational research that no one team can overcome.
