Infant Feeding Resources
Responsive feeding allows babies to eat based on their sense of hunger and fullness preventing overeating and obesity later in life. To learn more, the 9 Ways to Grow Healthy Colorado Kids recorded webinar Baby Bites: A review of current and recent updates on infant feeding can be found here.
Recently, the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) Institute for Healthy Childhood Weight released a series of resources called Building a Foundation for Healthy Active Living to help pediatricians, public health professionals and other providers improve their patient care and engage families in healthier living. Resources include:
- Provider education modules to support clinical care including appropriate nutrition, safe and supportive environments, and stable and responsive relationships related to feeding styles and eating routines.
- Consumer-focused materials designed to increase awareness about key behaviors such as responsive and complementary feeding.
More information can be found on AAP’s Institute for Healthy Childhood Weight’s website.

February is American Heart Month
The American Heart Association (AHA) released new blood pressure guidelines in November 2017 describing that people with readings of 130/80 are now considered to have high blood pressure. Previously, high blood pressure was defined as 140/90.
The AHA recommends lifestyle modifications as a first line of defense to prevent heart disease. The recommendations for a heart-healthy diet include reducing salt and incorporating potassium-rich foods such as bananas, potatoes, avocados and dark leafy vegetables.
Other recommendations are losing weight, quitting smoking cigarettes, cutting back on alcohol and increasing physical activity.
Healthy blood pressure is very important during pregnancy. It is recommended that pregnant women follow healthy lifestyle habits, like gaining the right amount of weight during pregnancy, to have a healthy pregnancy and baby.

Colorado Public Radio Recognition
Healthy foods and beverages are essential for heart health. The Cooking Up Healthy Options with Plants (CHOP) program's work to increase the consumption of seasonal fresh fruits and vegetables and/or on-site garden produce by children in care earned local and national recognition. Their three pronged approach of onsite gardening, nutrition education and culinary training is making a difference in Colorado communities.
The Colorado Healthy Hospital Compact is helping hospitals practice what they preach to build healthier nutrition environments by reducing or eliminating unhealthy foods and beverages and promoting breastfeeding. More information about the nation's only such statewide initiative and the 25 hospitals that have joined the Compact can be found here.
