Hello All,

Very exciting things are happening here at Spaceship Media. We’re excited to share our progress!

Cheers and thank you,

Announcing The Many: A Conversation

We are beyond pleased to announce that, with the generous support of the Einhorn Foundation’s Helping People Get Along Better Fund and the News Integrity Initiative, we are gearing up to launch The Many, a national conversation bringing people together across political lines. The Many builds on the success of Talking Politics, in which we brought Trump voters from Alabama and Clinton supporters from California into an extended conversation on Facebook immediately following the 2016 election. To learn more about The Many, check out our project page — particularly worth your attention is the video about it that Kaylee made.

Homeroom Update

The Homeroom, a conversation Spaceship launched in partnership with the Seattle Times’ Education Lab, is well underway! The conversation is bringing educators and parents of students of color together to discuss strategies and solutions for meeting the needs of students of color in Washington public schools. Thanks to our able and engaged partners, especially, from The Times’ Ed Lab, Linda Shaw and Dahlia Bazzaz. We’re looking forward to see the stories that emerge from this engagement.

A Seat at the Cross-Country Dinner Table

Kaylee interviewed several of the women who participated in Spaceship Media’s Talking Politics, asking them to reflect on their experience meeting, talking, and bonding with women from opposite sides of the country and with opposite political views on almost every issue. Moved by their voices, she wrote about the impact of those interviews here.

Spaceship on the Road!

Eve represented Spaceship at the Obama Foundation Summit in Chicago earlier this month, facilitating her table’s dinner conversation (lucky dinner table #42), which included Anand Giridharadas, whose opening presentation to the Summit was spell-binding and included this provocative question: Is there space among the woke for the still-waking? Today, there are millions who are ambivalent between the politics of inclusion and the politics of exclusion — not quite woke, not quite hateful... The woke have a choice about how to deal with the ambivalent. Do you focus on building a fortress to protect yourselves from them? Or a road to help them cross the mountain? Read all of Giridharadas’ piece here.

Meanwhile, Jeremy was in Utah for the Solutions Journalism Summit, where he engaged with the altitude and led a group in discussing the topic, “Can Solutions Journalism Play a Role in Depolarizing Communities.” The verdict: it can. This from Jeremy: “It’s an inspiring, infectious thing to spend a few days in a roomful of journalists committed to highlighting what is working in the world as much as what is not.”
