Humboldt Green hosted the Humboldt County Cannabis Chamber of Commerce monthly mixer at the Eureka Northcoast Horticulture Supply for the month of November. The Green Team transformed the warehouse and put on a well-received event with a nice offering of hot and cold appetizers, wine from Flor d' Luna Winery and beer from The Booth Brewing Company. Thank you to all of the businesses that  donated items towards the raffle to help raise money for the Cannabis Chamber. We appreciate everyone who made it out to the event. Northcoast Horticulture Supply is already looking forward to hosting next year's HCCCC November Mixer. You can apply to be a member of the Humboldt County Chamber of Commerce. The mixers alternate between Northern and Southern Humboldt County every second Thursday of the month.
NHS, GreenBroz, 1 Degree Consulting empowered by Humboldt Green and the Canndor Herbarium Project set up booths in Vendor Village at the Golden Tarp Awards held at the Mateel Community Center a few weeks ago. Humboldt State University students from the Department of Fisheries Biology have teamed up with the students of Arcata High to build and maintain an aquaponics system in their greenhouse on the high school campus. The HSU students reached out to NHS requesting assistance with acquiring a list of supplies for the project. NHS loves to give back to student programs and was happy to be able to provide a donation to help the students with their requested horticulture supplies. Check out NHS's University Blog for more information about the construction of their greenhouse and the aquaponics system the students are building.
Northcoast Horticulture Supply has signed up with Food For People to be a drop off location for the 25th Annual Holiday Spirit Food & Fund Drive. Food For People provides 10% of Humboldt County residents with food assistance each month. Here is a list of the non-perishable foods that families, seniors and children need most: canned meats, canned soups, peanut butter, beans, whole wheat pasta, rice meals, cereal, canned fruit and canned vegetables. If you would like to participate and help out those in need in the Humboldt community, please bring your bag or box of donated food items to any of the NHS locations or the Fortuna Feed store.
Northcoast Horticulture Supply teamed up with Humboldt Seed Company and Phylos BioScience to donate horticulture supplies to a Humboldt County care package sent to a non-profit farm in Jamaica called Genret Farms. Nathaniel Pennington from Humboldt Seed Company helped initiate the care package after hearing from Genret Farms that they were struggling with russet mites. He reached out to Steve Gieder of Northcoast Horticulture Supply and asked if NHS could help recommend and provide a donation for natural products that would help solve the crop infestation. NHS loves to give back to the community locally and globally, so we offered to help the non-profit farm out with some horticulture supplies and tools. Read about their journey on the NHS University Blog
It is going to take months for Sonoma, Napa and Mendocino County fire victims to rebuild everything they have lost. All four of the Northcoast Horticulture Supply locations and the Fortuna Feed site are continuing to accept donations and supplies for those affected by the Northern California fires.

Greenhouse Tips From Will at the Eureka NHS Store

Before you lock the gate leaving the greenhouse and garden for the winter, there are a few last task that you could do to save yourself some money for next spring.

Take down your poly greenhouse cover and store it somewhere safe away from the elements and critters. Even with just a small amount of snow, a tough greenhouse can be crushed when the cover remains on which means a large cost in replacement arches and plastic. Covers only have a set lifetime of sun exposure before they start to deteriorate. By storing the cover when it is not in use, you are lengthening its lifetime. Your blackout covers should similarly be stored in an area out of the elements and away from pests. Rats and mice frequently chew homes in stored plastic.

Take down your fans. They can easily rust out or be stolen. If you can't remove them at least waterproof them with a plastic sheeting. It's a good idea to secure all valuable equipment. Leaving your stuff on an abandoned farm for months at a time could entice the opportunistic type.

Empty all water supply lines and irrigation set ups. Freezing water can burst lines and ruin components. This will save you some valuable time in repairs next spring.

Lastly, take a look around and see if you are forgetting anything. You'll sleep easier knowing everything is safely stored and ready for next year.
