YWCA Immigrant Support Initiative

Solo Para Mujeres

This is an ongoing group for Spanish-speaking women that meets weekly to provide participants the opportunity to receive and give support. The topics discussed are driven by group needs. One is for children 6-11 years old, the second is for teens from 12-18 years old.

Unidos Por el Amor y la Esperanza

Immigration Hardship Evaluations

Going through the process of filing for US resident status or defending oneself against deportation can be very emotionally taxing. As a result of increased community demand, YWCA is formalizing the immigrant support services it has provided to existing clients on an as-needed basis. YWCA Greater Austin is able to provide letters of support for U-Visa, T-Visa, VAWA, Hardship, and Asylum cases.

COMMUNITY OPPORTUNITIES & UPDATES

Family Budgets Update: What it Takes to Get By and Get Ahead

Use the CPPP Family Budgets Calculator to See What it Takes to Get By in Your Metro Area

Look up the cost of basic needs for several different types of working families in our state's largest metro areas and you will see that far too few jobs pay enough for families to get by or get ahead. The financial challenges are especially difficult for women, according the Center for Public Policy Priorities' updated Texas Family Budget calculator.
Their online calculator lets you choose from 12 different family types, 27 metro areas and various health insurance and savings preferences to see what it takes for families to make ends meet. Texas Family Budgets then calculates housing, food, health coverage, child care, and transportation expenses as well as what retirement, emergency and college savings would typically cost in their metro area. Family Budgets also shows what the most common jobs are in each metro area, what those jobs pay women versus men, and whether those jobs pay enough for families to make ends meet.

Apply to Pitch Your Surplus at the [Re]Verse Pitch

Entrepreneurs are used to pitching their business idea to investors, partners, and anyone they might share an elevator ride with. In this competition, the tables will turn. The [Re]Verse Pitch Competition is a social innovation program to help turn valuable raw materials that are currently leaving local businesses, non-profits, and institutions as waste into the foundation of new social enterprises.

Many organizations have waste products that have more economic potential than being sent to the landfill. If your organization is one of them, you have probably found yourself looking in the dumpster and shaking your head. Entrepreneurs across Austin are looking for new business opportunities with a positive social impact.

Do you hope they would decide to find a business solution to your waste challenge? Apply to pitch your industrial scrap, byproduct, or other waste stream with unrealized value to social entrepreneurs! Simply create a short video or photo slideshow showing the material and submit your application by December 1.

Update on City of Austin's Paid Sick Leave Stakeholder Group

  3. A text message line  for those who want to provide input via text message.  The phone number is 512-643-5627; text the word “Austin” to that number, and you will receive prompts to provide input.
Upcoming Meeting Schedule:
  • Thursday, November 30th, 4-6:30 p.m., Fiesta Gardens, 2101 Jesse E. Segovia Street, 78702  At this meeting, they will continue the discussion and staff will also return with some feedback on how stakeholder recommendations might work in practice.

REFRAMING TIPS & TOOLS

Tax Messages that Work

Congress is moving quickly on legislation to overhaul the tax code, with serious short and long-term implications for human services and the communities that we serve. As discussed in the National Reframing Institute's October 5th newsletter, the connection between tax policy and our nation’s ability to foster the full potential of all of our residents is not clear or obvious to most people. The National Human Services Assembly (NHSA) developed talking points to help foster a deeper understanding among the public and Members of Congress about what is at stake for our communities in the current tax policy debate.
"Building Our Collective Well-Being with Forward Looking Public Budgets" weaves together the FrameWorks Institute’s extensive research on taxes and on human services to articulate a vision for tax policies that will strengthen our nation now and in the future by building and maintaining economic, physical, mental, and emotional well-being at every stage of life. Thank you to Julie Sweetland at FrameWorks for her much appreciated guidance and feedback as NHSA developed this resource.

NHSA is urging human service organizations to reach out to their Members of Congress to express opposition to the tax bills moving through the House and Senate. We hope that advocates will rely on these talking points in their communications over the next critical days and weeks of the legislative process.
