New SASS- UHNBC Aphasia Pilot Project in Prince George

We are pleased to announce a new pilot project which was developed in partnership with the University Hospital of Northern B.C. in Prince George. Funded by a small UBC Teaching Enhancement and Learning Fund, 8 SLP students will be in externships over April to July 2018 to run new outpatient groups for Northern B.C. people with aphasia.  Under the leadership of Project Coordinator and Clinical Supervisor, Elaina McCarron MSLP SLP(C), Dr. Tami Howe and the Clinical Coordination Team at SASS, this student-involved clinic will provide a program for people with aphasia and their families based on Supported Conversation with Adults with Aphasia™. In addition, this project will also offer experiential learning in communicating with people with aphasia to students from Nursing, Medicine, Dietetics, Occupational Therapy, Physiotherapy, Social Work and Pharmacy  at UHNBC and will measure outcomes in their interactions with people with aphasia.

Director's Message

As the School’s new Director, I am delighted to be in a position that will give me opportunities to acknowledge, support and learn from our Clinical Faculty community. My 20 years as a professor in the School has made me keenly aware and appreciative of the vital contributions Clinical Faculty members make in their roles as clinical educators of our students, collaborators with our faculty, and advocates for the professions of audiology and speech-language pathology. It is through your partnering with us that we will be able to meet the growing demand for services in speech-language pathology and audiology in BC and in Canada. We are particularly grateful at this time to the many clinical educators who have stepped up to the plate over the last couple of years as we increased our SLP student body (and concomitant need for more student preceptors). As a community of clinical educators, you are passing along your individual and collective knowledge, wisdom, skills, and passion to the next generation of professionals, and in so doing, promoting the greater good of communication health and well-being for all in society. I am honored and delighted to be a part of such a magnificent team! I look forward to meeting many (more) of you over the coming months and years in my Director role.

Introducing the New and Improved Student Externship Handbook

We are pleased to announce that the New Student Externship Handbookfor Audiology and Speech-Language Pathology students is available to all Clinical Educators. As the definitive student reference for all things externship, it is also the 'textbook' for our first year clinical preparation course. To view the handbook, please click here
We would like to formally thank all those audiologists who participated in the focus group this past year. The focus group's efforts will help our clinical coordination team fine-tune our handbook and resources for both new and experienced Clinical Educators.

As my first year at UBC's School of Audiology and Speech Sciences (SASS) has come and gone, I can't help but reflect on the people I've had the privilege of working with. The clinical educators I've met over this past year have been passionate and enthusiastic about their work. Your positive attitudes have made the biggest difference to me and my work at this school. Thank you all for your guidance and patience during my first  year at SASS.
