In early November, I was fortunate to be able to take some time and head out to the American Southwest. It was a whirlwind tour clocking 2040 miles in 10 days, and encompassing 5 national and 3 state parks. It took a considerable amount of prior planning in order to travel so much and hit so many iconic places. I timed my trip for the peak of fall out there, but unfortunately fall came a bit early this year. I was still able to catch the last few days of the yellow on the Cottonwood trees.
The Watchman Of Zion, above, is a famous location captured by many photographers before me. This was taken inside Zion National Park where a bridge crosses over the Virgin River. Capturing this iconic shot is a right of passage for photographers, and they line up every morning and evening (and under starlight, for some of the real nuts like myself) to take their best shot at it. Photographed so many times over the years, it is impossible to get a completely new viewpoint for capturing the beauty of this area. My goal quickly became grabbing the iconic shots, while keeping my eyes open for the special, unique shots in between. The sheer number of photographers that were gathered in this place, even during the off season, was simply staggering.
While in Zion, I (of course) had to do the famous Virgin River Narrows hike. I hiked upstream as far as Wall Street and Orderville Canyon, and then needed to return before losing daylight. If you plan to visit this area, it is a must to put it this hike on your list of things to do. It was simply breath-taking.... and not only because of the cold November water!
