The Watchman Of Zion
The Watchman Of Zion
By: Benjamin DeHaven
In early November, I was fortunate to be able to take some time and head out to the American Southwest. It was a whirlwind tour clocking 2040 miles in 10 days, and encompassing 5 national and 3 state parks. It took a considerable amount of prior planning in order to travel so much and hit so many iconic places. I timed my trip for the peak of fall out there, but unfortunately fall came a bit early this year. I was still able to catch the last few days of the yellow on the Cottonwood trees.

The Watchman Of Zion, above, is a famous location captured by many photographers before me. This was taken inside Zion National Park where a bridge crosses over the Virgin River. Capturing this iconic shot is a right of passage for photographers, and they line up every morning and evening (and under starlight, for some of the real nuts like myself) to take their best shot at it. Photographed so many times over the years, it is impossible to get a completely new viewpoint for capturing the beauty of this area. My goal quickly became grabbing the iconic shots, while keeping my eyes open for the special, unique shots in between. The sheer number of photographers that were gathered in this place, even during the off season, was simply staggering.

While in Zion, I (of course) had to do the famous Virgin River Narrows hike. I hiked upstream as far as Wall Street and Orderville Canyon, and then needed to return before losing daylight. If you plan to visit this area, it is a must to put it this hike on your list of things to do. It was simply breath-taking.... and not only because of the cold November water!
Dead Horse Point
Dead Horse Point

Dead Horse State Park is kind of a one-trick pony (pun intended!), but that trick is excellent. From the last viewpoint named Dead Horse Point, you are greeted with a view of the Colorado River which carves this canyon system. There is a short trail along the rim and you can pick your angle for the shot - well, somewhat. Horseshoe bend is the main subject of most pictures you will see from this trail. There are many trails and dirt roads down in the valley, but these are all scars from the mining industry heyday that are slowly healing. Dead Horse State Park is very near Canyonlands National Park and both are easily accessible from Moab, UT, as is Arches National Park. Again, a must for your list of places to see...
Opening Of Antelope Canyon
Opening Of Antelope Canyon

And what photography trip out west would be complete without a stop at Upper Antelope Canyon? First of all, the colors... The colors were incredible. Where the sun shone directly on the top of the cliff walls, the sunlight bounced around creating warmer tones. And where there was nothing but blue skies above, a colder tone prevailed. The sand was as fine as powder and it was impossible to go into the slot canyon without getting covered in it.

Second, you may not realize the sheer number of people who visit the canyon. I highly recommend hiring a Navajo tour guide if your goal is a photography trip because they know the canyons well, and they know how to herd the non-photographers out of the way of the photographer's line of vision. Even in the "off season", there were more people then Black Friday at Walmart... I would have left with no usable pictures had I taken just the sightseeing tour.

Lastly, it is deceiving how dark it is down in the slot canyons. Upper Antelope Canyon has sheer cliff walls of 100 or more meters, and only during the height of summer will any sun rays penetrate to the canyon floor. So it is dark. The above image was a single 2-second exposure, and I was near the mouth of the canyon where more sunlight bounced in... And the colors were simply amazing!
