Taylor Adventure - Nepal

Christmas is joy, religious joy, an inner joy of light and peace.

Christmas gives us the opportunity to pause and reflect on the important things around us - a time when we can look back on the year that has passed and prepare for the year ahead.

I have just returned from yet another trip to one of my favourite countries NEPAL. The trip was not without its problems, lost luggage which eventually arrived the following day. Preparing to depart at 6am for the village I managed to have a senior moment of forgetfulness by tripping over my suitcase, which I had only seconds before moved from in front of the wardrobe to the end of the bed. Too pre occupied about anyone watching me through a 2cm gap in the curtain. What was the outcome? After an MRI the result was a fractured shoulder and partial tendon tear. What to do! Brace support, drugs, and carry on with the trip of course. It made trekking a little tricky, especially with a little slip here and there, but with the help of my walking pole, and support staff carrying my day pack, I managed quite well.

We returned to Majuwa Village and Saraswati School to see how they were coping after a destructive monsoon season. Unfortunately, the school lost part of the perimeter fencing and retaining wall that we built last year. Hopefully we can find the funds AUD$2000 to repair the damage in 2018. We also visited Annapurna Primary School which was completely destroyed from the massive Earthquake 3 years ago. Today the children are attending classes in very poor conditions, the building is constructed of corrugated iron, concrete floor, no windows or doors. With the help of our very supportive clients we were able to donate 6 whiteboards, and educational material to the 2 schools. The children of Lindfield East Public School donated funds to build a 2 metre brick wall, which will now fill in the gap from the floor to where the corrugated iron begins. A new school is being built by an NGO, but it is 18 months in the making, despite what we are doing to help the children will still suffer through another cold winter, and hot summer.

Homes are slowly being built, after 3 years of waiting and living in makeship shelters, the Government has put in place strict building regulations, and have given each householder USD3000 in 3 instalments. During our visit we inspected several new houses which consisted of one or 2 very small rooms, which are used for cooking, sleeping and eating and housing 4-6 family members. Nepalese villages consist of mainly women and children, who are very strong, resourceful and resilient they continue with their difficult daily lives, farming and taking care of their families.

We are privileged to be connected by a love for travel! Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do.”
