As this crazy year heads toward its close, we here at The Rachel Rosenthal Company feel it’s more important than ever to carry forward Rachel’s legacy of eco-feminism, animal rights, and the soul-making, life-affirming power of live theatre.
Different facets of these themes appear and reappear in Rachel’s archive. It is a bittersweet task to pore over notebooks, early performance drafts, photos and correspondence, and to organize what was truly a lifetime of art-making. Tad and I have made some headway with the archive this year, but it a painstaking job, and there is still work to be done.
In addition to the work on the archive, our TOHUBOHU! Extreme Theatre ensemble is still going strong. We performed out of the studio for the first time, proving we can live outside the womb! We did a residency at UC Irvine, presenting a workshop, a video of Rachel’s improvised piece “Zatoichi” an ensemble performance followed by a Q&A moderated by Jacki Apple. In addition, Dean Stephen Butler presented us with an award honoring Rachel, “In recognition of a lifetime of artistry and innovative contributions to the world of performance.” It was a wonderful evening, and I know Rachel would have been proud.
We plan to change things up in 2018. Instead of the usual two performances a month, we will present seasonally, performing 5 shows in a week, every three months. This will challenge us in new ways, and allow room on our schedule for additional classes, workshops and student performances. In addition to drop-in workshops and the 8-week class, we will be offering DbD workshops twice a year. We are aware that many worthy organizations compete for your end-of-year donation dollars. We rely almost solely on contributions to keep our doors open.
