Dairyland Power Natural Gas Plant Partnership Will Enable More Renewable Energy

Dairyland Power Cooperative has announced plans for a 525-550 MW combined cycle natural gas plant, in partnership with Minnesota Power.  The Nemadji Trail Energy Center, which will be co-developed by Dairyland and Minnesota Power, will be located along the Nemadji River in Superior, Wis.  The location is adjacent to the service territories of Bayfield Electric Cooperative and other Dairyland member cooperatives which serve northern Wisconsin.

The Nemadji Trail Energy Center will support the major wind and solar energy investments Dairyland continues to implement.  “Natural gas is a renewable enabling resource,” said Barbara Nick, Dairyland President and CEO.  “Natural gas plants provide critical back-up to intermittent renewable sources of power, like solar and wind.  Dairyland’s resource diversification strategy enables renewable forms of generation and ensures reliability, sustainability and affordability.”

Construction on the proposed project is expected to commence in 2020 after receiving regulatory approval and it is anticipated that the plant will be operational in 2025.  The Nemadji Trail Energy Center would be the largest private investment in Douglas County and could result in over $1 billion in regional economic benefit over 20 years including approximately $1 million in local tax benefit.  It is estimated that the project could create as many as 260 jobs during peak construction and up to 25 full-time permanent jobs.

0% Interest Economic Development Financing Available for Your Project
