Welcome Back Parents:
I hope that you all had an enjoyable Thanksgiving break with family and loved ones. We are excited to have our scholars back at school ready to receive rigorous academic instruction in classrooms. On November 21, 2017, the Department of Public Instruction released the school and district report cards for all public schools in the state of Wisconsin. MESA earned 4 out of 5 stars on the school report card with a score of 77.3% which indicates that our school “EXCEEDS EXPECTATIONS”! We are 21.3% above the MPS district average.
Our ultimate goal is to become a 5-star school and while we acknowledge that we have some work to do in order to get there, we remain committed to achieving our goal. In order to help us meet our goal, please continue to push your scholar to turn in his/her homework daily, come to school 96% of the time and come to school on time. School begins at 8:30a.m. Scholars should arrive by 8:30a.m. to receive free breakfast and participate in class crew. As we continue to push our scholars to achieve academically, we are excited for those who signed up already for winter Camp Eagle Eye. If you are interested in more information about Camp Eagle Eye, please see Ms. Newman (414) 418-8652. We will also have a Compass Challenge over winter break where scholars can earn prizes. Compass is a computer-based online program, paid for by MESA, for all scholars. Scholars who successfully complete Compass activities perform better on their standardized assessments (STAR and FORWARD). More information about this will be shared in the academic section of our newsletter.
Congratulations to all parents and scholars of MESA on earning the 4/5-star rating on the 2016-2017 school report card. Continue to ROCK!!
Please feel free to email or call me with any questions about assessments or our school report card.
Sincerely,
Michael Morgan
Principal

‘Tis the season to spend quality time learning with your family! The Scholastic Parent & Child Magazine provides many different activities to do with your child(ren) during the winter. Here are examples of ways to build your child’s skills in reading, writing, and math:
-
Read for pleasure. Whether your child is in the mood for holiday stories or the newest installment from his favorite series, winter break provides the perfect opportunity to stash schoolbooks and read for fun. Encourage relatives to give books as holiday gifts or gather in front of the fire (big kids too!) to take turns reading from classic tales.
-
Cook up an easy lesson. Invite your child into the kitchen to help you whip up a special dish — from holiday themed cookies to potato pancakes. All of those half-tablespoon and quarter-cup measurements are great practice with fractions.
-
Write thank-you notes. Penning notes of appreciation to gift-givers teaches gratitude and helps polish writing and spelling skills. Not sure what to say? Check out our thank-you note template for wording. One final tip: a mug of hot cocoa can make this task feel more festive!
-
Make the most of car rides. Turn the drive to or from a holiday get-together into an opportunity to practice letters and numbers. You can look for license plates from different states, try to find the alphabet on the license plates, or count the number of red (or white or green) cars you see. For another take on this fun idea, you can have your kids play license plate bingo with this free printable.
-
Maintain reasonable bedtimes. With no school to get up for in the morning, it can be tempting to let kids become night owls. A few days before school starts up again, ease back into the regular bedtime schedule so your child can start the year bright-eyed.
-
Ask for grocery list assistance. Have your child help choose what to buy, decide how much you need, check your supplies to see what you've already got, write or draw pictures on the list, and sort coupons.
-
Let kids help with online shopping. Need a last-minute gift for Grandma or Uncle? Log onto your favorite shopping sites and let your child help you select presents. This helps children work on their computer and research skills.
-
Have a family game night. Chances are many of your family's favorite board and card games reinforce skills such as counting, reading, and drawing. Gather the group to play games you usually don't have time for on school nights.
