WWFHA #GivingTuesday

SPECIAL Washington Wild Member Email - November 28, 2017

Dear WWFHA members,

Fifteen years ago WWFHA pledged to grow girls’ hockey in the northwest and give young female athletes the opportunity to learn to skate and play.

As we celebrate our 15th anniversary this year we are even more committed to making ice hockey at every level accessible to females in the community, regardless of their family’s economic means.

With our commitment to make girl's hockey accessible to females in mind, we want to introduce you to one of our members who would like to share their story. It is an example of what hockey can do for young females when they are given a chance to play.

This story is about a girl getting the chance to play hockey through WWFHA's scholarship program, but it’s so much than just playing the game; its about building confidence, strength, and the ability to overcome challenges.

Her mom Meg writes:

“My daughter Cinder discovered hockey through a Girls’ Try Hockey for Free event hosted by WWFHA.  She fell in love with the sport that day and I wanted to immediately get her involved as much as I could; however, I was worried about the high costs of playing the game.

Now, one year later her excitement for hockey has remained unchanged... as well as her dream to play the goalie position - another surprise! After building foundations in WWFHA’s Learn to Play Beginner’s class she joined WWFHA's (new) girls’ house league (WWFHL). Soon she got to try the goalie position and her passion for the sport grew.

Cinder was given the opportunity to play hockey because of a WWFHA scholarship. Since then hockey has provided her with confidence, fitness, and a drive to learn new skills. Her grades have improved and has had a profound impact on her efforts to overcome anxiety.

We cannot express our gratitude for this organization and the game my daughter loves. Without a scholarship this would not have been possible.”
Empowering Girls

WWFHA is a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering girls through the sport of ice hockey so they may reach their dreams on and off the ice.

The Women’s Sports Foundation states that teaching girls to skate and play ice hockey builds healthy lifestyles for more productive, healthy and happy lives. They state that:
  • Participation in sports also reduces risk of osteoporosis and breast cancer by up to 60%.
  • Sports teach teamwork, goal-setting and the pursuit of excellence in performance and achievement-oriented behaviors—critical skills necessary for success in the workplace.
  • 80% of female executives at Fortune 500 companies identified themselves as former "tomboys“ — they participated in sports in their youth.
Girls participating in sports are more likely to:
  • Earn better grades in and graduate from school,
  • Demonstrate higher self-confidence and less depression,
  • Maintain better body images and psychological states of well-being
… than girls who do not play sports.
