Dear RGHS Parents and girls

As we approach the end of a very full and busy school year, I do believe it would be fitting for me to share some staff changes that are happening in 2018.

Sadly, both Mrs Anita Pretorius and Mrs Lorraine Gardiner will be retiring at the end of this year.  I know that every pupil who has had the privilege of being taught by these two ladies will testify to their dedication to academic excellence.

Mrs Gardiner has been an excellent Grade 12 Head and ensured that our Matric girls have had the best possible final year at school.  She has also been responsible for ensuring the next generation of teachers have been afforded opportunities as visiting student teachers.  Mrs Gardiner acted as mentor and organiser for students doing the practical component of their teaching qualification at Rustenburg Girls’ High.

As a form tutor (and previous Grade Head) Mrs Pretorius has dealt wisely with pastoral matters to ensure the best for each of her learners.  Her commitment to her subject, Afrikaans, extended beyond the classroom as she selflessly gave of her time to ensure girls caught up on work missed and provided extra lessons.  On a personal note, she even made sure we had transitional learning in place for my daughter on our return from the UK.

Mrs Gardiner and Mrs Pretorius will be missed by staff and pupils and we wish them both all the best in the future.  We hope to see them often as honorary members of the Rustenburg Old Girls’ Union.

Mrs Pat Hanger will be retiring from her work as the admissions secretary and office support to take on the part time position of ROGU secretary based at the high school.  She will become responsible for fostering relationships with past pupils, so that they feel more part of the school.  This will hopefully provide more opportunities for past pupils to visit the school, to share life experiences or even provide work experience placements for our current learners.  Mrs Hanger’s knowledge of the school and its history and her familiar face to many generations of past pupils, makes her a perfect fit for this new role.

During next year, Mrs Marilyn Peters will be handing over the reins of the library as she prepares for retirement.  Her boundless energy and dedication to keeping the printed word alive for us all is much appreciated.  We know that the legacy she has built will continue despite the technological age. Who does not really love a good book and the crisp feel of real paper between the fingers?

We are also saying goodbye to Assistant Cook in the Hostel, Ms Jaline Brown who will also be retiring. We wish her all the best for the future.

Ms Ingrid Weideman is leaving us to pursue her love for Alexander therapy by starting her own business. She has been a wonderful English and Life Orientation teacher and over the years has encouraged critical thinking and is much loved by the girls in her form class. Her gentle nature will be missed and we wish her all the best.

Next year, we will welcome Ms Johandrie Oosthuizen into the Afrikaans department, Mr Glynn Alard into Life Sciences and Ms Nokutula Dyonase and Ms Louise Keegan-White into the Mathematics department.

We are also glad to welcome Ms Julie Campbell into the English department, as well as Ms Karyn Gideon and Ms Kayla Voskuil as EMS and Accounting teachers in 2018.  We have been impressed by the quality of their teaching and the high standards that they have set during their learnerships in 2017.

SNAPSCAN CODE FOR WATER PURIFICATION SYSTEM

With the water crisis as it is, we are looking into
alternate methods of ensuring the school can
remain functional at all times and to reduce our
impact on water use. To this end we would like
to install a water purification system that would
allow us to use the iron-rich borehole water in
the school and hostel, effectively taking us off
the grid. This is subject to local legislation and
ecological impact on the underlying aquifer. This
is outside of the normal budget and we are
looking for contributions towards this project.

Use the snapscan code on the right to donate. Please choose "Bursar" from the dropdown list.

Attention RGHS Parents

I would like to encourage all parents to listen to the radio interviews below from Afternoons with Pippa Hudson on CapeTalk.
The first interview is with Emma Sadleir who is an expert on social media law. She has recently released a book called Selfies, Sexts and Smartphones: A teenager’s online survival guide. We have ordered this for the Media Centre and encourage all girls to read the book at some point in the future.
The second interview is with a panel of experts and the discussion is around teenage mental health, anxiety, depression and teenage suicide.
