Steps to Recovery Homes
2017 Winter Newsletter
Rising Above the Problem &
Sharing The Blessings

Happy Holidays!

We here at Steps to Recovery Homes want to wish everyone an amazing holiday season and thank everyone for all the support we have received throughout the year. We continue to evolve and are looking forward to 2018 and what the New Year will bring.

Thoughts for the Season

Discipline Children need discipline to feel secure; so do adults.
Discipline means understanding there are logical consequences to our behavior.
Discipline means taking responsibility for our behavior and the consequences.
Discipline means learning to wait for what we want.
Discipline means being willing to work for and toward what we want.
Discipline means learning and practicing new behaviors.
Discipline means being where we need to be, when we need to be there, despite our feelings.
Discipline is the day to day performing of tasks, whether these are recovery behaviors or washing the dishes.
Discipline involves trusting that our goals will be reached though we cannot see them.
Discipline can be grueling. We may feel afraid, confused, and uncertain. Later, we will see the purpose. But this clarity of sight usually does not come during the time of discipline. We may not even believe we're moving forward. But we are!

The task at hand during times of discipline is simple: listen, trust, and obey.

Higher Power, help me learn to surrender to discipline. Help me be grateful that You care enough about me to allow these times of discipline and learning in my life. Help me know that as a result of discipline and learning, something important will have been worked out in me.

Addiction Deaths in Arizona

More than 3,200 suspected opioid overdoses have been reported to state officials since June 15, with more than 400 of those deaths, the Arizona Department of Health Services said.

The updated data, released in an Oct. 17 blog post by ADHS Director Cara Christ, highlights a growing problem in Arizona and nationally.
Gov. Doug Ducey declared the state's opiod crisis a public-health emergency in early June, prompting heightened statewide efforts to fight the abuse.
In her "Opioid Update" post, Christ said the state maintains a statewide overdose database, called the Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program.
About 40 percent of people experiencing a suspected overdose that had prescription history in the Controlled Substances Prescription Monitoring Program had received opioid prescriptions from 10 or more providers, according to the post.
But despite this number, only a quarter of the medical professionals who are prescribing opioids in Arizona check the database before writing a prescription, she said.

On Oct. 16, a new mandate went into effect that requires clinicians to check the database prior to prescribing opioids or benzodiazepines (drugs that enhance the action of neurotransmitters in the brain).
About 40 percent of patients registered in the database who had an overdose were prescribed both opioids and benzodiazepines, despite a high risk for complications if combined, she said.

Christ noted other states have implemented similar mandates, saying they reduce the number of opioids prescribed across the board.

Earlier this week, President Donald Trump declared the opioid overdose epidemic a national public-health emergency.

In Arizona earlier this month, the time window for the state to collect opioid-related overdose information from first responders and health-care providers was pushed back to five days, from 24 hours. The original time frame was intended to capture a real-time picture of opioid abuse in Arizona.

Despite the less-frequent reports, Christ said, several facts have come to light about opioid abuse while combing through the data.

Movie Night – December 6th at 7:30pm

Mary Fisher Theater with the help of BMO Bank is putting on a small fundraiser and awareness night by playing a movie for the public. We will be playing - When a Man Loves a Woman - a spectacular movie that shows some results of addiction and the hope that comes with recovery.

Our founders will be doing a 2 minute presentation before the movie and a question and answer section after the movie.

Please come and enjoy this movie with us. The cost will be $7 a ticket and proceeds will go to buy rights for the movie and then be split with the theater. The money that Steps to Recovery Homes brings in will go right to a Scholarship fund to bring in individuals that need help and do not have the means to get it.
Purchase your tickets here.

Here is some more information on the film;

Here is a wise and ambitious film about the way alcoholism affects the fabric of a marriage. So many movies about the disease simplify it into a three-step process: Gradual onset, spectacular bottom, eventual recovery. It isn't that simple; most alcoholics never even give themselves a chance to recover. And recovery is a beginning, not an end. "When a Man Loves a Woman" is about an alcoholic who recovers - and about her husband, who in some ways dealt with her better when she was drunk.

The movie stars Meg Ryan as Alice, a San Francisco junior high school counselor who drinks all day, every day. Her husband, Michael, an airline pilot played by Andy Garcia, knows she gets loaded on occasion, but has no idea of the extent of her drinking.

Complete Review

When a Man Loves a Woman is a top of the line film from 1994. This movie stars Meg Ryan and Andy Garcia. This movie shows the affect addiction and alcoholism have on children, workplace, husband, and many others. It also allows you to see the codependency involved in these issues and the hope that comes from recovery. It is an outstanding movie that will touch your heart in more ways than one.

Jennifer Eddingfield

Hello! My Name is Jennifer Eddingfield. I'm 33 years old and I'm a single mom of a beautiful and sassy little 9 year girl old named Austyn.  I'm a native to Arizona but I love to travel and explore new places.

After having my daughter I started down a path that was destructive to not only me but my family as well. I became the family member you would never invite to functions because I was intoxicated. After a few years of destroying myself I finally sought help.

Steps to Recovery Homes took me in and helped me become the woman I am today. A woman I am proud to be.  I am currently 3 years clean/sober thanks to my higher power and the support I have received throughout these last few years from this program and family.

I love this program! I am very blessed to have been involved with the program even after I graduated. I am here because I hope to give back at least a little of what was so freely given to me. I hope to make a positive effect on this program and I am very grateful to have been given this opportunity.

Testimony

Coming to Steps to Recovery Homes has been a lifesaving and life changing experience for me.  Before coming to the Steps to Recovery Homes program, the last few months of my active addiction, I was homeless and bouncing back and forth between homeless shelters, a car, a tent and sometimes just walking the streets with nowhere to go.  Steps to Recovery Homes took me in when I literally wanted to die and taught me how to live without the use of alcohol and drugs.  They have so much love and compassion for their clients.  They taught me accountability, responsibility and how to love myself.  I learned to forgive myself through their program.  They provided help with transportation to and from meetings daily, life coaching sessions 5 days a week, monthly bus passes to help with transportation to get to and from work, etc… They also provided monthly Equine Therapy, Kayaking, Hot Yoga, Group Activities and Camping Trips.

Thanks to my higher power and all of the things that their program has taught me I now have a new life and I’m so happy!  I have a job and have never missed a day of work, I have a place to live, and now I have a car.  Most importantly, I now have people in my life that love me and care about me and I’m rebuilding relationships with my children and family.  Steps to Recovery Homes has also become my family.  I could never thank them enough or show enough gratitude for saving my life.  They are like family to me.

Get Your Tax Credit

It's that time of year when you get to specify your Arizona Tax Credit. Please consider giving to Steps to Recovery Homes. Help our future generations by supporting a solution to the #1 Crisis in the US Addiction. Visit link below and donate on line today!

The biggest thing is that some people do not understand the Tax Credit and how it works…

The following is good information to explain more about the Arizona State Tax Credits.
As Americans, a percentage of our earned income is taxed by our federal and state governments. If left alone, we have little control over where this money goes and often surrender it to programs outside our local communities.
Utilizing tax credits is a tangible way to ensure our hard-earned money is returned directly to organizations and programs that make an impact in our local economy. The Verde Valley Tax Credit Coalition is a group of non-profit organizations who collectively help increase local awareness of the AZ tax credit, primarily the overlooked AZ Charitable Tax Credit.
Data from AZ's Department of Revenue shows that Yavapai County maxed out its available funds for the School Tax Credit but fell considerably short on the available funds for the Charitable Tax Credit - suggesting many community members are not aware of the opportunity to easily support their local non-profits.
What are Tax Credits?
A tax credit is a dollar-for-dollar reduction of the income tax you owe. For example, if you owe $1,000 in state taxes but are eligible for a $1,000 tax credit, your net liability drops to zero. Tax credits generally save you more in taxes than deductions because deductions only reduce the amount of your income that is subject to tax, whereas, credits directly reduce your tax bill (more).
Arizonians can utilize Charitable Tax Credits on top of Public School Tax Credit and Private School Tuition Tax Credit: (credit amounts determined by the State of Arizona Department of Revenue)
  • Qualifying Charitable Organizations (QCO): Up to $400 if filing individually, or $800 if married filing jointly
  • Qualifying Foster Care Charitable Organizations (QFCO): Up to $500 if filing individually, or $1,000 if married filing jointly
Credit amounts listed above are determined by the State of Arizona Department of Revenue. Contributions to QCOs and QFCOs do not influence the amount that can be claimed for each credit: meaning you can utilize BOTH tax credit opportunities in their entirety IN ADDITION TO school tax credits as long as your tax liability warrants (i.e. the total amount of each credit that a taxpayer may use for the taxable year cannot be greater than the tax liability shown on the tax return).
Be sure to speak with your local accountant for information regarding roll-over credits.
Please also note that the period for making eligible contributions has been extended this year! Donations to QCOs or QFCOs made on or before April 15th may be applied to the 2016 tax year.

Our Statistics

This is the last set of Statistics that we did (about 3 months ago)

1) Graduated since opening – 39
2) Clients currently in program – 13
3) Former clients continue to go to meetings – 72
4) How many Graduates are gainfully employed – 27 are gainfully employed. 6 – don’t know. 5 – other income (disability or tribal income). 1- no longer with us.
5) How many graduates have become Steps to Recovery Homes employees – 6

Other statistics

1) People we have served – 245 (Some of these people come in for a day – some stay for a year)
2) There are 76 people that I have no idea how they are doing. These individuals tend to relapse, so because we are just not sure, we assume they are not always on track. But this is not always true.
3) 169 people we do know a little of how their life is going. 117 people are being productive in life, holding jobs and not getting in trouble. 52 are not doing so well. Out of these 52, 11 are currently in jail and 6 are dead from this disease.
4) If we put all of the people we do not know about on the negative side with the people we do know are struggling, then, this means that 48 % of the people that have been our program for a length of time have learned something and applied it to their lives.
5) People that have been in the program that are gainfully employed – 101 that we know of.
6) 16 % that come into the program actually graduate and get a certificate
7) 31% we don’t hear from
8) 29.5% of former clients go to meetings
9) 4.5% of former clients are in jail (that we know about)
10) 48% are living a more productive life style
This means we are Rising Above and creating an environment that truly works if the clients take direction and continue to use the tools we have taught them when they leave. There is hope and there is a solution.

Our Program

We offer a holistic view on recovery that works. We have an affordable program that goes deeper than the surface level reasons that people abuse substances and allow our clients to start doing the work to actually change and sustain long-term recovery. We help the people that fall through the cracks with nowhere to go.

If you know someone that is suffering, Steps to Recovery Homes can make a huge difference. This program offers individuals a chance at finding a purpose in their lives.
We currently have 2 women's beds and 1 men's bed open here at Steps to Recovery Homes. If you know someone who is really sick and tired, and wants to change their lives for the better, let them know we can help.

Roots Music Festival – Recap

The Northern Arizona Roots Music Festival was a huge success. Everyone had a lot of fun. We had 41 riders for the poker run and over 350 people attended the event. Not everyone stayed the whole time, but the people that did come had a blast, enjoying some of the 9 amazing bands that played. This was a sober and clean concert that was put on to help support individuals in recovery to be able to have fun without the heavy temptation that comes with most concerts that have alcohol readily available. We are very excited about making this a yearly event and will let everyone know as soon as we set a date for 2018.
