From the Desk of Dr Graeme Edwards - Headmaster: Preparatory

We are often reminded of the phrase,” … the only constant is change …”. In as much as this is a rather cliqued statement, it certainly resembles an undeniable element of truth. South Africa often seems to be in a constant state of change and, as such, change is a daily reality for all who live in our country. If change is indeed a constant - it follows, then that if one cannot avoid it - the one aspect that we can control is the way we think about change as well as our attitude towards it. While change can evoke fear and uncertainty, it is also the source of new possibilities, and an opportunity to embrace the future in a positive and meaningful manner. In the words of Socrates:
“The secret of change is to focus all of your energy, not on fighting the old, but building the new!”

Indeed, St David’s has experienced change this past year. In the Preparatory School, this has been particularly noticeable within the changes at the Deputy Head level and the repositioning of the Middle Management structures. New appointments and the growth of the Middle Management has created new opportunities for leadership and involvement within the life of our school. This is an exciting development and one that will enhance our ability to respond professionally and deliberately the needs of our boys, and of course to parents and staff. We will embrace 2018 positively and proactively. Moreover, we look forward to meaningfully engaging with all members of the broader St David’s family so as the reach our primary goal, that is, to provide the very best educational offering to every boy in our care.

I trust that the final stretch of 2017 will articulate your goals and hopes for this past year, and that the time of holiday will be rejuvenating and blessed.
Do allow me to use this opportunity to thank all staff, parents and boys for their contribution to St David’s this past year. Our school is a busy and dynamic space, and the many parts certainly do contribute to the overall success of the whole.
My very best wishes are extended to you.

Celebrating Diversity

All the St David’s staff have either recently participated in, or will shortly be participating in workshops relating to the topic of diversity. Coincidently, the United Nations’ International Day for Tolerance was celebrated last week on 16 November. These are important topics all around the world, and it is vital that all of us engage in discussion about the issues surrounding diversity, tolerance, respect and transformation.

Not all of us are the same. In fact, we are all unique. There is variety and diversity in terms of the languages we speak, our age, our physical appearances, our life experiences, our preferences, and so on. It is a feature of societies that we often feel more at ease with people who are similar to us. It is often easier to relate to someone who speaks the same language, has similar interests and shares a common background. While it is good to have opportunities to be with people who share things in common with us, it is also dangerous to think that people who appear different in one way are not also similar to us in many other ways. All of us feel pain, fear, joy and happiness. We all have hopes and aspirations. We share a common humanity.

The International Day for Tolerance is intended to help raise awareness of the importance of tolerance for a healthy society. It means accepting difference. It means accepting that we live in a world where there is diversity, and that this is a good thing.

As South Africans, we are aware that there are people who feel challenged and threatened by difference and diversity. Perhaps they have been taught to fear difference, perhaps their circumstances have limited their opportunities to spend time with people who are different from themselves.

What can each of us do?
  • Let us celebrate the ways in which we are different.
  • Let us value the uniqueness of others.
  • Let us be tolerant, understanding and accepting.
  • Let us stand up against hatred and discrimination.
  • Let us challenge the prejudices we may hold.
Good luck with the final few school days. Face them with the same enthusiasm and intent we all displayed in January. A well-deserved break is beckoning.
End of Matric Exams for the Class of
2017

The majority of our Matric Class of 2017 wrote their final exam on Thursday, whilst a small number of boys write their final exams on Monday on Tuesday. Many of the boys left their school shoes behind to be donated to other children still on their schooling journey. We wish all of our Matric boys a good holiday and all the very best for their results.
Be a Star this Christmas – give the Gift of a Marist Education at St David’s

You can make a young boy’s wish come true this Christmas, through a contribution of any amount to the St David’s Marist Foundation Bursary Programme.
"I don't want my start in life to define my future"
(Response from a young bursary applicant during his St David's interview)
The Bible tells us that, at the birth of our Saviour just over two thousand years ago, His young family was assisted in their time of need by the kindness of friends and strangers, some of whom had very little themselves and some of whom brought great gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh.
This Christmas give the gift of a Marist Education to a young boy for whom this would ordinarily be an unattainable dream.
All donations are eligible to receive a Section 18A Tax Certificate which entitles you or your company to a tax rebate of up to 10% of your taxable income (with this year’s Tax Year closing on 28 February 2018).   In addition, company donations to the Bursary Fund qualify for SED and SD points in terms of the Revised B-BBEE Codes for Companies.

The Christmas Star Campaign

Please click here to complete a Christmas Star Donation Form and make your donation.

How can you contribute?
You will receive a Christmas Star Certificate in your name (or the applicable gift name), together with a Section 18A Tax Certificate for tax rebate purposes

Donate to the Father Bernard Brewer Bursary Fund
Make a donation of any amount (choose one of the Christmas Star options) in your name, or as a gift donation for a family member or friend.
Donate to the Mizpah Bursary Fund
The Mizpah Bursary Fund was established in August of this year by a current Bursary Recipient - his wish is to be able to give future boys with financial need the same opportunities and experiences that he has received at St David’s.
(Mizpah means ‘togetherness, blessing and protection’ and the Fund is administered by the St David’s Marist Foundation)

Consider establishing a Family Bursary Fund at St David’s in your family’s name
Invest in the lives of boys and young men who are financially excluded from receiving an education at
St David’s Marist Inanda. There is no better way of leaving a family legacy than ensuring that our world has the leaders and change-makers that are needed to make our world a better place for all generations to come.
(Please contact the St David’s Marist Foundation to discuss further)

REFLECTION

“WE OUGHT TO HELP ONE ANOTHER”

Beloved, you are faithful in all you do for the brothers, especially for strangers, they have testified to your love before the Church.  Please help them in a way worthy of God to continue their journey.  For they have set out for the sake of the Name and are accepting nothing from the pagans.  Therefore, we ought to support such persons, so that we may be co-workers in the truth. 3 John: 5-8.

The traditional last week of holidays Cricket Clinic will run from Monday 8th January to Friday 12th January and will be co-ordinated by Mr Eyles (National Level 3 Coach) and conducted by school staff with cricket coaching experience.

The emphasis at the clinic is 'fun and sun' and obviously also includes a lot of advice and skills development. It is also an opportunity for the boys to transition from holiday mode and to ease into routines, to see their friends, to get some fresh air and exercise, to have fun and to learn about cricket.

Venue: Prep Fields
Dates: 8th-12th January
Times: U 7-9           8:00-10:00
U 10-Open 10:30-12:30

If you intend sending your son to the clinic, please click on this link and fill in the short survey so that we have and idea of the number of boys who will be attending.
