January/February 2018

Pastor Nikki's Notions

Dear Friends,

As 2017 draws to a close and 2018 is on the horizon, our thoughts naturally turn to reflecting on what we have done this year and to look to the year ahead with hope that we will live our lives more fully, lose the extra weight, do more of what we love, stress less, give more of our time or resources to charity, etc. This process of taking stock is a healthy one, and it seems that everywhere we turn, some self-help book or spiritual guru or pop-psychologist is telling us that we need to slow down, to detach ourselves from the daily grind. And this is nothing new; theologians and religious people throughout the ages have also expressed the importance of slowing down as a spiritual practice. What all of these people recognize is that slowing down provides us a chance to reflect and examine our lives. And a life lived in reflection is a life full of growth.

It is good for us to take the time to recognize that the start of a new year, if properly approached, has the potential to be a life-changing experience. It forces us to ask the most fateful questions we will ever ask: Who am I? Why am I here? How shall I live? Who have I wronged and how can I make things right? What is broken in my life? What chapter will I write in the book of life? In the midst of all of the hope that a new year brings, all of the potential, all of the new beginnings, in the midst of all of the anxiety a new year brings and all of the uncertainties the future holds, let us draw closer to Jesus, our rock and our redeemer. Daniel Darling of The Gospel Coalition suggests doing this using four steps: remember, repent, renew and rest. His  first step is to remember. Remember all of the accomplishments and high points, all of the failures and the hurts. Remember all of the things that God has done for you and all of the things that God has brought you through in 2017. Remember all of those places where God met you and all of the people who helped you to see God in fresh ways. Give thanks to God for the year that has passed. Second, repent. If there is anything that you have done or failed to do in the last year that has been weighing on your conscience, hand it over to God. Then, you can truly start 2018 fresh and ready for whatever God has in store for you. Third, renew your commitment to all of those things that have been important to you in 2017. Recommit to your family, to your marriage, to your church, to anything that has fed your soul in the last year. These things will help you to follow God through 2018 as well. Finally, rest. Rest in knowing that you belong to God, and that God will be with you as you embark on a new year! And, of course, plan time throughout the year when you can rest, when you can slow down and take stock of your life once again. For a life of constant reflection is one of constant growth!

I am excited to spend 2018 with you all and to see all of the growth God has in store for us this year!

Yours in Christ,
Pastor Nikki

2018 Newsletter News
"Find a new way"

Nearly everything that gets done at and for the church is done by volunteers, or those elected onto Session or Board of Deacons.  But others take on extra responsibilities, tasks at hand, and local mission activities, giving of their time selflessly.  Without those volunteers, we would be in a boat without a paddle and going nowhere fast. For all of those, and for those willing to "find a new way" to give to God by giving of their time, we are thankful!

This newsletter is a way of reaching out to you, letting you know what is upcoming in the life of our church.  It also shows ways that you, too, can put your finger in the pie and help out with all kinds of missions.  One of my favorite sayings is, "God gives you 24/7, what can you give him?"

It's important to me to give back to God for all the blessings He gives me. With that, I give you the Presby Gazette monthly. Now, you will receive this publication every two months, sharing the fun events, meaningful missions, and special services offered. As events develop you will receive emails from DPC giving you details so that you can plan to attend, sign up for lending a helping hand, and schedule your church events into your calendar. Of course, everything will be announced at church with sign-up sheets available to you if you are not on-line.

Reading through this newsletter is a great resource to "find a new way" to be more a part of Delafield Presbyterian Church.  It's time to get busy, it's time to be there, it's time to carry the light of Christ everyday and in every way.

Scroll through and find what interests you and ASK how you can get more involved.  The church doesn't run all by itself, and it takes a village to move it forward!

Yours in Christ, and Happy New Year!

Little Dresses Meetings Resume

Here’s What’s Happening with Little Dresses

Our Little Dresses Group has been experimenting with two new dress patterns.  Samples hang on our hallway bulletin board. We hope to continue making these, as well as, our ‘pillowcase’ style dress.   We are well on our way to having fifty pairs of pajamas made by June 1st for Open Arms.  The orphanage is unheated, and in their winter (opposite of our seasons) temperatures can drop to the 30’s.  Recently we received several donations of fine cotton fabrics.  We are very thankful for the generosity of those who have shared these with us.

We meet in the conference room from 12-4  on January 17, February 21, March 21, April 18, May 16, and June 20.   We welcome those who sew and those who can help in other ways including ironing, sorting fabrics and assembling dress kits.   We also teach sewing to those interested.   All are welcome.

If you have any questions, contact Betty Tills at  262-719-3093.
