NIAGARA FALLS CULTURAL HUB & FARMERS MARKET VISIONING STUDY

Public Meetings & Engagement Update!

A 2nd Public Meeting on the new Cultural Hub & Farmers' Market was held on Tuesday, November 14, 2017 at the Niagara Falls History Museum with 50 people in attendance. At the meeting, consultant Megan Torza (dtah) reported back on what we have heard from the public in response to the initial development options presented in the 1st Public Meeting and through the Site Plan Option Survey. Based on feedback, a hybrid final concept (Niagara Falls Exchange) was PRESENTED [HERE] IN DETAIL with site perspectives, floor plans and views, and various modes of operation for several of the spaces.

The proposed concept was presented to City Council on 28 November 2017. Next steps will be the undertaking of Business and Operating Plans for the facility with the detailed design phase to begin in 2018.

SHINY & BRIGHT ETSY HOLIDAY MARKET
On Saturday December 2nd, Niagara Etsy Artisans hosted their second annual Shiny & Bright Holiday Market at the Niagara Falls History Museum. 28 artisans set up shop throughout the museum galleries, theatre, and the lobby selling unique handmade wares including jewelry, clothing, soaps, quilts, and much, much more. Over 225 visitors made their way to the museum, and most left with a great holiday gift for themselves or a loved one.
Partnerships between museums and artisans are on the rise across the world. Niagara Falls Museums encouraged Etsy vendors to visit the museum (free of charge!) in the lead-up to the event to be inspired by the collection. Many artisans visited the museum, and many more viewed items in the collection digitally, through the museum website. These visits helped shape some beautiful pieces that have direct and noticeable ties to both Niagara Falls and the Museum. One of the most popular inspired pieces from the Market were cookies by Food Swings (@FoodSwings.ca on Facebook) that were inspired by a technicolour postcard of the Falls, visible on a large wall in the Niagara Falls Community Gallery upstairs in the museum.
Etsy artisans and museum visitors alike enjoyed the experience. Vendors enjoyed the unique and intimate environment provided by the museum – one that is unlike the large convention-centre shows most Etsy vendors frequent. Many visitors admitted that they not ever been to the Museum, and were excited that the Shiny & Bright Holiday Market afforded them an opportunity to discover the beautiful building. The visitors who are Museum regulars also welcomed the chance to see the Museum in a new light, with new faces in new places.
Niagara Falls Museums looks forward to continuing this partnership with the Niagara Etsy Artisans in future years, and to build on the successes of the Shiny & Bright
