Turn With Independence

December 2017
Offcuts from the Board
December 2017

As woodturners, we do not have much scrap, just smaller pieces that can be used together to make something larger in combination with other bits and pieces. That's what this little section attempts to produce. By adding the small parts of our activities and plans we have a combined bigger picture of opportunities to take part in within the club.
  • This month’s Open Shop is truly "open" to anything anyone desires to bring and work on. Bring your tools and project material and make something happen. You might even want to work on a Christmas ornament. See more information below.
  • This month we will have our annual pot luck dinner.  The club will provide the drinks and main course and members bring a side dish or dessert. We will also have our Christmas ornament contest as well as our normal Show & Tell.  Also, we will have our traditional "give one - get one" gift exchange. So, bring a wrapped gift of around $20 to exchange with another member which is determined by drawing.  So, plan to join us for a fun evening of fellowship and sharing.
  • Dues for 2018 are now being accepted. They are still $15 for emailed newsletter (or no newsletter) and $25 for hardcopy USPS delivered newsletter. Please see Mel Bryan at the meeting to pay.
  • As a reminder, you have a chance to win an airbursh by purchasing a ticket for $2 each for the "special raffle". The funds raised will go into the equipment fund. We will do the drawing after we collect $100 dollars in ticket sales.
  • There are many ways you can contribute to the life of our club. A couple simple ways are to submit your answers to the "5 Woodturning Question" article. (See the article below for more details). Another similar way is to submit your woodturning tips also for the newsletter. (Refer to the article later.) Of course there are many other ways to put your enthusiasm into action. You can ask any officer for direction. There are many practical ways to be involved. A simple way to help is to come early to the meeting and help set up the room for the meeting and/or stay afterwards and help clean up. Either or both are appreciated.
Keep turning safely and we’ll see you at the meeting.

Monthly Open Shop

The Open Shop for the recent months have not had a specific focus so it's wide open to whatever you desire. So, bring your tools, project piece and safety equipment and join in the activity. There will be others there and we will try to help in whatever way we can. We will meet on Saturday, Dec 16  at 10 AM at our meeting place at Metro Hardwoods. It could be a good time to work on your Christmas ornament for the contest.
    Keep turning and be safe.

Our Last Meeting

Our demonstration at the meeting last month was a real "toot". David Bartlett showed us how he turns a toy whistle following Bonnie Klein's method in her book "Classic Woodturning Projects". David first drilled a 3/8 X 3" hole in 3/4 X 4" piece of wood on the lathe then mounted it in a jam chuck made from a 1/2" dowel held in a Jacobs chuck sized to fit the 3/8 hole. After turning the whistle to shape he turned a captive ring on the far end of the whistle. He cut a half  "V" slot 5/8 from the end of the hole and used the dowel that had been the jam chuck and made a fipple for the whistle testing often for the sound.
Thank you Dave for your entertaining demo.

5 Woodturning Questions

Do you enjoy this feature of your newsletter? If so, why not submit your answers to the following five questions and let us get to know you a little better. Who knows, you could help some other member gain the confidence or confirm that they are truly on the right track.

The intention of this is for us to get to know each other and our passion for woodturning by answering five simple questions related to our woodturning desires.

1.         When did you start turning and why?

2.         What tools do you use the most?

3.         What finish do you prefer?

4.         What part of turning do you enjoy the most? What draws you to it?

5.         What do you hope to achieve this year in your shop?

Don’t wait to have your arm twisted to answer these five question. Simply write down your responses and submit them to indepwoodturners@gmail.com or give them to Mel Bryan at a meeting. As they are received, they will be put in the newsletter and we will be able to enjoy “your” story and get to know you a little better.

Now for this month's tip:
This month's tip comes from the AAW. It is a short video by Josh Friend, editor of the AAW Journal about using the resources available on the AAW website.
Click on this link to view the video. Enjoy.

Turning to the Library.

As a reminder, be sure to take advantage of the fact that our monthly demonstrations are not only in our library on DVD discs, but are posted on You Tube.  One advantage is that the most recent demo will be on You Tube faster than it shows up in our library.  This is true for most of the demos done this year. Simply go to the You Tube site on your computer, tablet, iPad or smart phone and in the search box, search for  “Indep Woodturners” and the topic in which you are interested. And usually, the first item in the search results will be our YouTube channel which when you click on it you will get our channel with all the videos. Not only will the video of our demo show up, but related videos will show on the screen for later viewing.
Don’t forget to check the inventory of our library as we are regularly adding new items.

 Reflections

As we come to the close of another year, let’s look back at what we did and what had been accomplished as a club of (fairly) like minded people.  We grew; in members, in knowledge, in ideas, and in friendships.
We continued discussions on how to make the club grow. We began discussions on implementing some kind of mentoring program for new turners.  We taught a few new turners during open shop Saturday’s. We raised money to be used towards new equipment.  We discussed a new logo to better represent who we are and where we are.  We continued the growing process with all of its aches and pains and successes.
We helped host an international woodturning event.  By all accounts, the most successful one in the history of the AAW.  We helped sight impaired people turn their own pens.  We taught young kids to turn their own tops and vases.  We helped world renowned turners with their demonstrations.  We put together lathes and booths and dust collectors and numerous other items.  We worked hard and had a blast and made many new friends.
We had outstanding demonstrations at our meetings by some of our own members.  We learned  from them and grew as turners because of them being willing to get up in front of us and open up their hearts and show us what they love to do and how they do it in hopes of inspiring  at least a couple of us to try something new.
We had a busy year.  We will have a busy year next year as we continue to grow and learn.  We hope to do the pen camps again in the summer.  Please try to make it to at least one of these - it is an experience that you won’t forget and I promise that the campers won’t either.  Come to Open Shop and maybe try something new.  Work the booth during The Woodworking  Show.  Consider doing a demo – as a 2 or 3 person team, it is not that frightening and does not have to be elaborate at all.
We need to all be involved in these events if we are to continue to grow.  This club belongs to all of us and it takes an effort from all of us if it is to continue to grow and expand as it did this year.  Not just paying our dues and buying a couple of raffle tickets each month, but active involvement – volunteering, discussions, demos, suggestions.  We have a good, solid base for an outstanding club.  Now we need to work on building it to its full potential.  We made good progress this year.  Let’s continue the effort.
