Visual Communicators Newsletter
DECEMBER 2017

This is a monthly newsletter from the UN Designers and Visual Communicators Group in Geneva. Drop us a line if you would like to collaborate or share any material in this newsletter: info@UNdesigners.org

The biggest event of the year

UN Designers & Visual Communicators and the Perception Change Project are teaming up to bring you what it may be the first open conversation about branding and visual identity in the UN system. UN BRANDED will be looking at how UN visual identity has developed and how can keep up with a world in continuous change. To answer this and other questions, we have put together a panel of experts to bring different perspectives to the issue:
• Dealing with branding in-house: Ziad Al-Kadri Team Leader, Branding & Graphic Design Unit , Department of Public Information, United Nations, NY
• Out-sourcing studios that shape visual identities: Giacomo Frigerio, Blossoming studio, Milan, Italy
• Private sector / branding agencies: Geoff Linsell, Managing Director at Moving Brands, Zurich
• The academic perspective: Stefan Tschauko, PhD candidate, The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy
The meeting will take place on Wednesday December 13, Room 22, Palais des Nations, starting at 2pm (Coffee and cookies offered!).
Attendance is free and open to everyone from International organizations interested in the subject. If would like to participate:

  1. Please signing in this Doodle pool indicating your name, last name and your organization, by Tuesday 11th December at 12.00
  2. If you need a badge to enter the Palais, in addition to the doodle, it is mandatory to register on Indico

Making Health blossom

Many UN agencies have communications needs that can't be fulfilled inhouse. When outsourcing is needed, it's good to have someone like Blossoming: A Design House that doesn't just do cool designs that fit your brief, but that's also capable of bringing an entire fresh look and feel to your array of publications. That has been the case for WHO, but also other agencies like UNWomen, UNECE or UNAIDS have already benefitted from their work, and their Creative Director, Giacomo Frigerio will be with us in the above mentioned meeting to share his wisdom with you!

Visualising violence

#ENDviolence against children is one of the latest Unicef campaigns. For the campaign, they teamed up with Periscopic, a socially-conscious data visualization agency, in order to develop a global exploration tool that illustrates the scale of child homicide, bullying, violent discipline, and sexual violence. Visitors are invited to explore how the world’s children are impacted by each of these issues, and as they interact with the globe, they get a better sense of the universal extent of violence. And all this work was done pro bono. They really stand up to their motto – do good with data.

December Inspiration
A film festival
Date? 5-18 December. Place? The whole world. 30+ films showing in over 100 countries; The Global Migration Film Festival is a truly unique experience to be enjoyed wherever you are.
A list (or two)
Yes, it's already that time of the year when we come up with clever lists on what this year has brought us. You can read some web trends here or mobile app trends here. Spoiler: less is still more.
A storyteller
Refugee stories have been told from so many perspectives. And yet there is always a new angle. An exhibition of the illustration work of Olivier Kugler on refugees lives is in Rich Mix London now.
An atlas
Prestigious genevois editorial studio LargeNetwork and online magazine store Serendipité teamed up to bring us Pages: the first world atlas for magazine enthusiasts.
A different approach
Enfant terrible, and one of the latest revolutionaries in editorial design Richard Turley has created a fanzine for activist art platform Good Trouble. You can read more about this collaboration here.
A tool
December 1st was World AIDS day. And what a better way to understand its meaning than to dip into this content-rich data visualization tool delivered by DureTechnologies for UNAIDS.
