Metta Centre will be closed from 9 December 2017 and
will reopen on 1 February 2018.

President’s Message

As the year draws to a close, I invite you to look back on all that has happened in 2017: all the big moments, the little yet special moments, and all the moments in between. There may be faces of people come up in your mind: loved ones, wise ones, family, friends, or acquaintances.

This year at the Metta Centre, we have had our share of big moments with special teachers sharing the Dhamma with us, with various events occurring at the centre and out of the centre. We have also had many little moments but just as valuable and special: ‘light bulb” moments from participants hearing something that touches their hearts at one of our public talks and events; expressions of gratitude from those finding out that there is a Buddhist centre and community of spiritual friends here for the locals; friendships blossoming; acts of kindness and generosity; a smile, a hug, a bow, a loving word, a kind deed. Each and every one of these moments make up Metta Centre, and it is with much gratitude that we give thanks to all those who offered any of this to our centre.

In particular, I wish to express deep appreciation for our founding executive committee, each of whom have given their commitment, time and skilfulness in guiding Metta Centre in its first and second years in existence. I also thank them for their dedication in serving their third term for Metta Centre.

Presenting to you, our 3rd Executive Committee of 2018:

President: Tina Ng

Vice-President: Justin Luu

Secretary: Rina Vongthongsri

Treasurer: Zen Low

Metta Officer: Amy Huang

I would also like to extend my gratitude and sincere thanks to everyone who has helped Metta Centre throughout this year, and particularly recognising with thanks to our core team of volunteers, whom together have worked to allow Metta Centre to run smoothly: Bennett, Brenda, Don, Eric, Harshani, Joey, Michael, Niki, Nilushi, Peter, and Shwta.

On behalf of Metta Centre, I wish you a meaningful ending to this wonderful year, and a joyful start to the new year. I hope to see you all next year at the Metta Centre and continue our spiritual journey together in learning and sharing the Buddha’s timeless teachings.

Wise words of the Buddha:
6-week course on the Buddhist texts

Facilitators: Nilushi Disanayake, Zen Low and Tina Ng

Tuesday
5 December

6.30pm – 7.30pm
Cost: By Donation

Location: Metta Centre

The earliest recordings of what the Buddha taught are encapsulated in the various scriptural texts (“suttas”) in the Pali language. Those texts have been translated into English and various other languages to allow modern practitioners direct access to the records of what the Buddha taught to his disciplines over 2600 years ago.

This course will take participants through essential suttas to understand the core teachings of the Buddha, with direct reference to the earliest recordings of his teachings.

Monthly Mindfulness Practice for children, parents and adults facilitated by Sister Emerald and Sister Steadiness

Cost: By Donation | BYO Lunch
Location: Metta Centre

Course Details
10 December from 9.30am – 12.30pm
- Hugging Meditation (kids)

These monthly practice sessions are open to all ages, and parents with their children can practice the Dharma together. In this way, we can find our way back to our true home.

The sessions will be facilitated by Sister Emerald and Sister Steadiness, both students of Ven Thich Nhat Hanh.

For parents with children aged 5 years and under, please ensure that at least one parent is to be present with their child or children.

As children and adults may have specific needs, please bring packed vegetarian lunches for yourself and any children coming with you, if you wish to participate in lunch.

Weekly Events

Thursday Evenings Qigong

Every Thursday
6.30pm – 7.30pm

Cost: By Donation
Location: Metta Centre

Note:
Qigong will have its last class on Thursday 14 December
and will resume on 8 March 2018

Healing Breath Qigong is a practice that helps us maintain good health, live longer, aging painlessly, prevent illness, heal naturally, and lightening up our spirit.

Our weekly Qigong classes are led by Sister Steadiness, bringing in a holistic wellbeing practice that incorporates mindfulness, meditation, slow flowing movements, deep rhythmic breathing, and developing a calm meditative state of mind.

Sister Steadiness studied Chinese Medicine in Canada and learned Qigong and Tai Chi with many famous teachers in China. She worked as a Chinese Acupuncturist, Herbalist and Qigong instructor in Canada.

One day waiting at a red traffic light, a car ran into her back, paralysing her. She could not move her body, not even to hold a pencil to write. Nonetheless, Sister Steadiness with her resilience, strong mind, and belief in self-healing, used Qigong and Tai Chi, nutritious eating and a positive mind to heal herself without any medication.

Miraculously, from the inner strength of mind that guided her, with great patience and diligence, she was able to heal naturally. The Shakyamuni Buddha teaches that we can be our own teacher, our own healer.

After curing herself, Sister ordained as a Buddhist nun under Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh. Through her years of meditation practices, Sister has been creating new Qigong movements, combined with what she has learnt. She named this practice ‘Healing Breath Qigong’.

Our breath-centred Hatha yoga session is led by Shweta Dhawan. Shweta has been practicing yoga since 2006. She did a 350 hour breath-centred Hatha yoga teacher training in the classical tradition of T. Krishnamacharya from the Yoga Institute in Cammeray.

Shweta’s classes are a combination of playful sequencing for strength and flexibility, and breath-centred movements resulting in a moving meditation.
