CFP: Clemson, Georgia & Oklahoma took care of business & now we get a day's worth of debate on who the fourth squad should be, Alabama or Ohio State. Big Ten Commish Delany before yesterday's games: "I feel we can make an argument that we’re the strongest conference. […] We had the most FBS wins; we had the fewest FCS games. We challenged ourselves in every way. I think our efforts to play more conference games, to schedule up to a reasonable degree, to reduce the number of mismatches should serve us well. Another distinction is that Ohio State, if it wins, would have a championship. Conference championships are part of it." Delany went on the rally against playing FCS opponents, as well as the difficulty of nine league games, which is effectively the number OSU faced. "But I’m not in the committee room and I’ve always supported the committee. They’re smart people and work in good faith. But I hope and believe, have some confidence, that that will happen. But I’m not there, so I don’t know." (link); Buckeyes HC Meyer: "We played the three top-5 teams and won two of them. It's amazing how important this Playoff is and how the whole world revolves around it. I hope we get a shot." (link); Crimson Tide boss Saban: "Let’s say we lost by 30 points to Texas A&M, do you think we would even be considered?" (link); Yahoo's Forde: "The Big Ten has utterly flopped the past two years in the playoff. […] That shouldn’t be a contributing factor in the committee’s deliberations, if they’re going to view each season in a vacuum. But don’t be surprised if those past mismatches are lodged in the backs of their minds. So it is advantage Alabama. At least on this scorecard. We’ll see if the committee agrees. But understand this: A playoff tussle between those two teams is further proof that we are living in a golden postseason era in college football. Eventually we will get six or eight teams involved, but for now this is all good." (link); Yahoo's Wetzel: "Not enough focus on Ohio St AD being on committee. Don't care about recusal rules. They hang out with him weekly. Clemson AD also there. Ridiculous for AD of any typical top 25 team (or any ADs). Don't make me write another book." (link)
South Carolina State athletic trainer Long saved the life of Bulldogs student-athlete Solomon after he collapsed early in the game at NC State yesterday afternoon. Long & the EMS crew at PNC Arena sprang into action to administer CPR & emergency medical care. SCSU HC Garvin: "I witnessed an arena that came together in prayer and displayed genuine concern for this young man. I have received tweets, emails, phone calls and text from around the world with prayers for Ty and our team. Sports has the amazing ability to bring us all together for the good of humanity. The fans and administration of N.C. State were phenomenal and we appreciate your support and well wishes." (link)
Rocky Top: New AD Fulmer's base pay will be $575K. Fulmer will also receive two courtesy vehicles or a $1,600 monthly allowance, eight skybox tix for FB games, overall monthly expense account of $2,500 or $30,000 annually. Former AD Currie still getting paid as the university settles his account. (link); The exit of former FB HC Jones, former FB ACs, Currie & a potential settlement with Ohio State DC Schiano looks likely to cost UT $14M+. (link); SI's Staples: "More than anything, Fulmer needs to get everyone at Tennessee pulling in the same direction before hiring the next coach. The factions got the Vols here, and only working together will get them out. They need to take a cue from their fans, who showed more unity this week than the people running Tennessee have shown in 10 years." (link)
Historically, at the end of a given fiscal year, UNLV has picked up the tab when its athletic department went over budget, but things are about to change in Las Vegas. Rebs Prez Jessup on the change that will have the university offering a set amount of support at the beginning of the budget cycle and holding the department accountable for any overage: "When we brought [AD] (Reed-Francois) in for an interview up in Salt Lake City, as soon as she arrived, we began talking about how we would handle budgets. And this framing of the budget was immediately part of our conversations. Rather than wait until the last of the year, I wanted to work with her beforehand on what that budget was going to look like. I think for any manager in any kind of organization, that’s healthy. It causes the manager to act responsibly and be diligent about what they do." The exact numbers are still being worked out, but will likely be similar to the $5.1M the university contributed last year, which, Reed-Francois points out, is less than the Mountain West average of $8.6M and 'Group of 5' mark of $9.1M: "We’re certainly not asking for that type of investment. We just want to have it on the front end so we can budget for it instead of going to the university at the end and saying, 'Hey, we didn’t meet our budget.'" UNLV's FY18 budget is nearly $38M.(link)

Florida State AD Wilcox on the exit of former FB HC Fisher to Texas A&M, "Jimbo is one of the top coaches in the country. ... I'm worried if I have a coach that's not being pursued every year. So every year, he's being pursued. It finally got to the point where there was a pursuit out there that we couldn't match. We're working on it. We're getting there. The ACC Network is going to be up in '19, so there will be additional resources coming into Florida State, just as all the other ACC schools, so at some point in time we may have the resources Texas A&M has, but it got to a point where a school came calling and they basically allowed Jimbo to make history and we just weren't able to do that here." Further, Wilcox notes previous comments by Fisher in connection to the Noles facility situation, "I think for Jimbo, he needs to be at a place that has maybe everything already in place. […] We're very happy for him. We're very happy for Texas A&M. We wish him well, but we're going to be there, too. We are the best program in the country." (link)
Frost: UCF AD White believes he has the most attractive opening in the state & nation right now. Indicates the Knights will continue to play an up-tempo style of offense & says former HC Frost & his staff will coach in a bowl game. More: "It’s my job to prepare as I have been. Like any good athletic director is proactive and prepared and I can tell you I’ve been proactive and I’m prepared." (link); Here's the in-game clip of ESPN play-by-play man Levy announcing reports of Frost heading to Nebraska. Levy interjected during the second OT, accidentally called former ESPN headliner McMurphy, credited with breaking the news, "our own." (link); Here's the video from the Huskers of Frost coming home for a seven-year, $35M deal. (link, link)
The Xavier-Cincinnati MBB rivalry annually provides a ton of in-game energy & a fair amount of post-game drama. Yesterday it was Bearcats HC Cronin who claimed XU student-athlete Macura had some choice words for him during the contest, leading Cronin to head back to the post-game handshake line with some thoughts for Macura before being intercepted by his staff & venue security. During the presser, Cronin, "I've never had a kid tell me to 'eff off' three times before. During the game and after the game. You know who it was. Same guy it always is, every game. There's nothing to talk about. Where I come from, there's nothing to talk about it. If he was playing for me, he wouldn't play." Musketeers HC Mack: "J.P. is my guy. I'm not going to let anybody control the narrative on who J.P. Macura is. To say he won't play for me is disrespectful. ... I'm friends with Mick. You'll probably have to let cooler heads prevail over time." (link - leaving the court video, link - postgame presser video, link - article)
More HC Notes: Ohio State DC Schiano on his bid to become HC at Tennessee, "There will be a time for that. This isn’t the time. Tonight is about celebrating an incredible season by these kids, this coaching staff & the whole institution." (link); Auburn HC Malzahn says he wants to be with the Tigers moving forward, but no official word or deal is done as Arkansas is reportedly in hot pursuit. (link); UMass AD Bamford says FB HC Whipple will get an extension. (link); Word on the street still has Arizona State introducing new FB HC & former NFL boss Edwards tomorrow. (link); Indiana AD Glass will hire a new Volleyball HC. (link); So, too, will William & Mary boss Huge. (link); USA Today's Berkowitz with a laundry list of bonuses earned yesterday, including $42K+ for Clemson AD Radakovich, $20K for Ohio State's Smith, $50K for Oklahoma's Castiglione & $21K for UCF's White. Nike Global Basketball sports marketing director & former MBB HC Raveling on the recent FBI-MBB developments, "Bribery comes in many forms. We’re bribing players today. It’s just more sophisticated. Where the difference between the two is, is in the intent. The intent at that time was to strike the blow directly to the heart of the process, which is the game. Now the intent is different. We’re still bribing players, but we’re not bribing them to throw a game." Raveling does not believe shoe companies are the only culprit, points also to how the summer recruiting circuit is handled, believes the college game will recover & improve its operation. (link)
Feel good story of the day comes from New Mexico State as the Aggies won in come from behind fashion over South Alabama to break a 57-year bowl draught. The icing on top is the Arizona Bowl looks like the destination for NMSU, which is only a four-ish hour drive from Las Cruces to Tucson. AD Moccia: "Go crazy @NMStateAggies fans Go Crazy!!!  Your @NMStateFootball are bowl eligible!!!!!   This is for every Aggie THANK YOU!!!!" (link, link)
Listen: Pac-12 Commish Scott chats with Bloomberg's Sonic & Novy-Williams as part of their 'Business of Sports' podcast series. Scott covers a fair amount of ground on the basics of his leadership & challenges facing the industry. As you might imagine, Scott is still a strong proponent of the amateur model. Calls the current state of MBB "out of whack" & believes the NBA & NBPA needs to aid in improving the situation. Scott also notes the potential major upside to owning your own content, as the Pac-12 does, as the winds of technology & media consumption continue to shift. Around a 30-minute segment. (link)
Minnesota Prez Kaler sat for a Q&A with the Star Tribune this week in which he reiterated his support for FB HC Fleck: "He has a lot of energy, a motivational style around him that I enjoy a great deal. Not everybody does, not everybody is a P.J. fan, but [athletic director] Mark [Coyle] and I are. I have confidence that he’ll move us forward." Says MBB is "back" under HC Pitino, calls them a "formidable" team, but sees the need for more serious conversations between the AAU, NCAA and NBA and the relationships among those three organizations. "Heavens no" he doesn't regret any facility debt the Gophers have assumed, as the new digs were "really, really needed." A bit more. (link)
Ole Miss Senior Assoc. AD for Communications and Marketing Thompson will again this year send his 15-minute email survey to all season tickets holders in the SEC, gauging responses to 56 items about their respective gameday experience. As head of the SEC's fan experience working group, this marks the seventh consecutive year Thompson will have executed the survey. Thompson: "It's not a ticket sales issue. It's the tickets just go unused." LSU cited as an example, where Tiger Stadium is, on average, just 80% full on a given gameday, with season ticket sales at 71,800 this season in the 102,321-seat facility. Tigers AD Alleva: "Attendance is going down. We have to do a better job of making fan experience at games more friendly so they want to come and stay." Complaints from fans vary across the league, but at LSU it's parking and traffic that cause fans to stay home. Lots more here, including charts of FBS attendance averages over the past 10 years, those numbers for LSU and the SEC, as well as SEC FB season tix sales figures for FY16. (link)
Florida still owes Northern Colorado $650K from the Sept. 9 FB game that never got played this season because of Hurricane Irma. UNC AD Dunn: "There have been a number of conversations (between Florida and UNC)... there are details to work through and a resolution to work through." Adds he isn't "necessarily sure" the Bears will get the full sum. Dunn is also awaiting news from the NCAA on self-imposed penalties for MBB violations under then-HC Hill. (link)
Last night during the Big Ten FB title tilt in Indianapolis, a chunk of turf near the goal line ruptured, leaving Lucas Oil Stadium Field Manager Harlow working feverishly to fix the issue. The game was delayed for 10 to 15 minutes & the internet exploded with quips & memes for Harlow's hard work, which was recognized by Fox & the league after the game. (link)
Also Noticed: WSJ reports Disney & 21st Century Fox are back at the table & this time, "Fox’s regional sports networks could also be sold off, the people familiar with the situation say." FS1 & other sports outlets are not believed to be part of the conversation. (link); 76,534 attended the SEC Championship game in Mercedes-Benz Stadium. (link); Around 62,000 for the Big 12 title matchup in AT&T Stadium. (link); Colorado with an interesting new sponsor, an "Official Airport Parking Partner." How many of you have filled that category? (link)
