Do It Now.

We all know that our time on Earth is limited. We don’t know where or when our time will end, but it will. Even with this known fact, when a life is cut short it is difficult to understand and accept. Why do some of the good ones have to end their time early? Why does an intelligent man who gave so much to others, who loved his community and his wife have to be one of the chosen ones?

Maybe his purpose is to teach us to live every single moment, to be grateful for what we have and to remind us to tell those we love that we, well, love them.  Ryan Kuper, GHNA resident and board member lost his promising life just a couple of weeks ago. He was one of the good guys. Please keep him, his wife Michelle and their family in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

It’s also a reminder that the holidays are not a joyous time for everyone. Please increase your grace and acceptance, your giving and support during the time of the year that is meant to be a celebration. Tell your loved ones how much they mean to you.

Finally, this is my last article as your neighborhood chair. It’s been an honor and privilege to lead and serve this community. I encourage you to get involved and be a part of a leadership team who truly cares about you.

We hope you can make the annual cookie exchange on Sunday December 17th at 2pm.

NEW GIFT ITEM FOR 2018 – GHNA PET CALENDAR

Now is the time for you to start planning for 2018.  And what better way to do that than with the first annual “GHNA Pet Calendar.”  This brand, new item features the famous (and infamous) pets of the Garfield Heights neighborhood posed inside and outside of their homes.

It is our hope that this project will become an annual way for our neighbors to showcase the animal members of their families, as well as the homes where they live.

The calendars will be available for pick-up at the Cookie Exchange on December 17, just in time for holiday gift-giving at the holiday-friendly price of $15 each.

You can also order them from the GHNA web site:
 http://www.garfieldheights.org/ghna-merchandise.html
or you can mail a check payable to GHNA to 1186 N. Marengo Avenue, Pasadena, CA  91104.

There is no shipping cost, and your merchandise items will be personally delivered to any GHNA resident.  If you are outside of the GHNA area, please contact us at info@garfieldheights.org to arrange for a pick-up.

We have ordered a very limited press run of this inaugural calendar; so get your orders in early to be assured that you can turn the page on 2018 in style!

GHNA Book Club

We hope you can join us at the upcoming meeting of the GHNA book club. We will be meeting again on a Friday evening in January 2018 (exact date TBD) at the home of a book club participant. Everyone brings an appetizer and a beverage to add to the party-conversation atmosphere.

This book club was started to build a deeper connection to our Pasadena history, our community and to each other, making the mission of the GHNA book club unique to other clubs. We want to begin a thoughtful discussion about our current and future community and are now reading How to Kill a City: Gentrification, Inequality and the Fight for the Neighborhood, written by Peter Moskowitz (2017). As stated on the book jacket "the very future of American cities as vibrant, equitable spaces hangs in the balance". This book is available through several major on-line booksellers as well as Pasadena's own independently-run Vroman's Bookstone.

Please reply at info@garfieldheights.org if you are interested in participating. If you would like to participate but aren't wanting to actually purchase the book let us know and we can lend you a copy. We will contact you with the date and location of the meeting when we receive your reply.

Hoping you can join us!

Upcoming GHNA Board Elections

Do you love living in this neighborhood, and want to see it continue to improve and evolve?  There is a need for passionate volunteers to be involved to help guide Garfield Heights to new levels of excellence.  One of the best ways to get involved in making Garfield Heights a great place to live is to join the GHNA Board.  Won’t you take the time to step up and help us build on this success?    No special expertise is required; just a passion for keeping our neighborhood the special place it is.  Without committed volunteers, we cannot make that happen.  Board nominations and voting will take place at the January General Meeting on Sunday January 14, 2018, 4pm at Grandview Foundation, 1230 N. Marengo Ave.
