Teck' Eck

As outlined by Sharad Gandhi and Christian Ehl in their dialogue “Artificial Intelligence and the Risk of Economic Inequality” at our 29 Nov 17 meeting, the future is underway with AI.  The following article on artificial intelligence by AGBC member David Gates, President of Gates and Company, appeared in the 27 November 2017 edition of the “Delaware Business Times”:

Artificial intelligence Will Impact Every Aspect of Life

Whether you know it or not, artificial intelligence (AI) is probably already a part of your life. Familiar applications like Apple’s Siri, Google Maps, and SalesForce’s Einstein are applying AI in ways that dramatically improve user experience and value through better acquisition, interpretation and usefulness of vast amounts of data.

The last time a “research curiosity” produced such a massively meaningful business transformation was the commercialization of the internet. The internet spawned some of the fastest and most revolutionary changes in the history of the world. Society has benefited from solutions like Google’s search engine, YouTube, Skype, Google Maps, Facebook, Amazon and more … helping people be connected, better informed and more productive.

Increasingly digital

New technologies are transforming the world at a rapid pace. Sensors, high-performance computers, data storage, the internet, smartphones and social media have established the foundations of the digital world. New areas like cloud computing, big data, block-chain, internet of things (IoT), augmented reality, robotics, machine learning and AI are increasingly having an impact on industries, businesses, lifestyles and society.

Startup companies in AI and machine learning are attracting significant venture funding, while more established businesses already have products and services that leverage these technologies, such as self-driving cars from Tesla, diagnosis assistants for doctors from IBM Watson, and chat-bots like Siri and Alexa.
Artificial intelligence sits at the top of the digital technology stack. Consider a Tesla self-driving car that captures data about the car and its environment in real time: speed, direction, tire condition, proximity to other cars, etc. The sensors are part of an IoT network that overlays external information on road conditions, weather, construction sites and traffic — storing all this Big Data in the Cloud. Information is processed in real time by AI algorithms that are constantly refined through machine learning. AI determines at every moment what needs to be done: speed-up, brake, turn, etc. Machine learning allows AI algorithms to improve over time, continually making its use safer, more efficient and more capable.

AI is transforming everything

All aspects of business can benefit by exploiting AI. A doctor will improve diagnoses and treatments by utilizing a “Medical AI” agent. Lawyers will benefit from a “Legal AI” agent’s research on thousands of similar cases by developing an improved strategy in less time. An insurance company will assess the validity of a claim more efficiently with an “Insurance AI” agent that evaluates the claim based on experience “learned” by analyzing thousands of prior claims. Sales staff will close more proposals with “Sales AI” agents that help analyze customer history and preferences, competitor dynamics, and market conditions.

AI will not be a stand-alone tool, but integrated into all processes, improving the intelligence, predictability, reliability, usability and personalization of various solutions. An AI-enhanced Google map of the future, for example, will likely guide you to your destination with more background information about you, your car, your habits, your preferences, road conditions, weather, etc., than today. It will make users feel that it understands them, their situation and their environment perfectly.

What next?

Expanded integration of AI is inevitable and will increasingly be a requirement for future competitiveness. Understanding, developing and implementing a robust value proposition and business model based on wholly new technologies takes time and requires a commitment from senior management. Companies that took advantage of digital technologies - like Sony - have thrived, while those that did not - like Kodak - have suffered. Creating or enhancing products and services that can benefit from the enormous potential of

AI should start now.”

On behalf of the wonderful singers and musicians, AGBC member Hillary Coley invites you again to this wonderful Christmas event!

The Joyous Noel Christmas Benefit Concert, “Helping People of the World,” seeks to raise funds that in this year will go to the organization "Brücke nach Kiew". The organization supports people in need in the Ukraine, in particular in and around Kiew. More information (in German) can be found on their website:
http://www.bruecke-nach-kiew.de/

The money raised will be used for two projects. The first one is emergency support for handicapped children or children with other health issues that do not get any support from the state. The mothers are often single raising mothers who barely have enough to feed their families. Money is also urgently needed for a shelter where food is provided to deserted children. All the money raised will flow 100% into these projects.

We are blessed to have great singers and musicians who give of their time freely with songs from all walks of life.  Come and celebrate with us a Joyous Noel and let’s help put love and joy in the hearts of those who need it most!  Remember, your attendance helps a child in need!

Germany News

Germany – Country with Best International Image:  Per the 24 November 2017 edition of “The Week in Germany” newsletter, the latest Nations Brand Index (NBI – conducted by German market research firm GfK and British consultant Simon Arnholt) shows that of the 50 leading countries evaluated, Germany enjoys the best reputation of any country in the world.

This evaluation is based on much more than economic success.  The survey focused on people, governance, exports, tourism, investment and immigration, and culture and heritage.  Except for tourism (10th place), Germany scored in the top five in the other categories evaluated.  Coming from the number 2 position in 2016, Germany replaced the US as the country with the best "brand image."   The next 5 positions, in order, were awarded to France, Britain, Canada, Japan and the US.

German Christmas markets are an annual delight.  Throughout Germany, Christmas markets celebrate seasonal customs and traditions in delightful historical settings. Beautifully decorated stalls offer gifts and handicrafts as well as festive baked treats, Glühwein and delicious regional specialties.  Often there are choirs and brass-bands with festive music.  Particularly popular with visitors are Nuremberg's Christkindlsmarkt and the Striezelmarkt in Dresden.

Munich has a number of great Christmas markets which are open 0800-2100 from Monday 27 November until 24 December.  Sunday market hours are reduced to 1000-2000; Christmas Eve hours run 1000-1400.

Interested in visiting Christmas markets in other areas in Germany?  You can find a great listing for more than 150 of the best markets on the German National Tourist Board’s website:

Check out the left side dropdown menu (“Christmas from A to Z”) to find the dates and information on most of the key German city 2017 Christmas markets.

Michelin Restaurants:  “The Week in Germany” (TWIG) newsletter dated 15th November states that Germany now has 292 restaurants which have earned Michelin stars.  The country now counts 11 three-star establishments, including Munich newcomer Atelier in the Bayerische Hof which is the 11th German restaurant with Michelin’s esteemed 3 stars.  Jan Hartwig, 35 years old, is the chef.

And for the first time, Germany has two purely vegetarian restaurants that have earned a star: Cookies Cream in Berlin and Seven Swans in Frankfurt.  (We believe that “Cookies Cream” is probably not associated with Ben and Jerry’s.)

The number of German two-star establishments climbed from 35 to 39, and 250 restaurants eateries here now have obtained one star.

Of course France leads the Michelin pack with over 600 starred restaurants, and Japan now has over 30 three-starred establishments.

The Guide Michelin, the "bible for gourmands," was first published in 1900, and Germany was awarded its first Michelin star in 1966.
