Celebrating women's voices

30th November 2017

Hello Everyone,

Hoping that you are all well.

Our Rebellious Sounds Archive project is beginning to take shape and we will have some exciting designs of the listening booth to share with you in the new year. We are really thrilled about this. There will also be information about where the mobile listening booth will be touring to and how you can get involved.

A massive shout out goes to Exeter City Council who are supporting our work in relationship to the archive in Exeter through their Exeter City Wide Grant programme. We are thrilled to have this support. Many thanks to them.

We had an amazing time at WOW Exeter, so thanks to their team and to all the wonderful people we had the opportunity to meet, talk to, hear speak. It really was an inspirational weekend. Here’s to next year’s event!

We are delighted to announce that we are advertising for a freelance Press and Marketing Coordinator for our Heritage Lottery Funded project, the Rebellious Sounds Archive of oral histories of women’s activism. This project has been made possible by players of the National Lottery. To apply for the Press and Marketing Coordinator role, please read the Role Description, Project Information and Dreadnought South West Information Sheet on our website here.

We are looking for an individual with a strong background in marketing and publicity who can connect to a wide range of people, is familiar with freelance working, and who has a passion for championing stories about women. The ideal candidate will be familiar with crowdfunding platforms and have experience of supporting and promoting crowdfunding campaigns.

Fee: £4,500 for 36 days over a period of 18 months

How to apply: Please send a CV and a covering letter (of no more than two sides) that tells us why you are suitable for the role and why you feel connected to a project such as this, and Dreadnought South West as an organisation. The deadline for applications is 12noon on 7th December 2017. Candidates will be informed about interviews on Monday 11th December by 3pm at the latest. Please send to info.dreadnoughtsw@gmail.com

Interviews will take place at Exeter Phoenix on Friday 15th December.

We would also like to welcome Carmen Talbot on board as our Rebellious Sounds Coordinator. We are really excited to have Carmen’s expertise in heritage and archive work as part of the team. So, do you have a story of women’s activism to share? Would you like to host the Listening Booth? Get in touch with Carmen to find out more: carment.dreadnoughtsw@gmail.com.
As we work towards the centenary commemorating the very first votes for some women in 2018, the Listening Booth will be at the heart of our programme of activities across the South West region.

All very best,

Natalie, Josie and Carmen

Strong Women – Catherine Cartwright & Bev Samler make new work for Exeter's 16 Days of Action 2017

Dreadnought Associate Artist Catherine Cartwright and Bev Samler have made new work exploring the theme of strong women for the international 16 Days of Action, a UN initiative that campaigns for an end to violence against women and girls.

Bev's work (above) is multimedia (painting, monoprint and collage), and Catherine's (below) is printmaking (monotype, screenprint and linocut).

Bev says: "The strength of women has astounded me throughout my life, and I have always tried to reflect this in my work as an artist. I have made these works in homage to these women, two of whom I have known all my life and one who is a new friend. They have all shown incredible resilience over long periods of time and coped with the difficulties life has given them. I don’t want to tell you their stories but would like you to look at them, form your own opinions and gain some of their strength. These are my ‘Earth Mothers’, my ‘Warriors’."

Catherine says: "I have been exploring the cyclical positive strength of women. My works don't depict specific women but speak for the feminine energy and strength that is universal and timeless."

Until Friday 8th December (9am-5pm Mondays-Fridays) at CoLab, Wat Tyler House, King William Street, Exeter EX4 6PD.
